1.0 Charity's Purpose
Our purpose is to promote social inclusion for the public benefit oy
preventing people, particularly but not exclusively men aged 30 or over,
from becoming socially excluded by any charitable means but in particular
by assisting them to integrate into society through the provision of
facilities in which they meet to undertake creative, physical or recreational
activities, health programmes, learn or pass on skills and knowledge, and
support each other socially.
Currently there are approximately 20 full-time members of the Shed
which includes a small number of disabled individuals. There is a cross-
section of ability and age across the membership which is cross-
community and cross cultural including foreign nationals.
2.0 Legal Obligations
The charity trustees have complied with the duty to have regard to the
guidance issued by the Commlssion under Section 4(b) of the Charities
Act.
The trustees have reviewed the flnanclal status of the Men's Shed and are
satisfied that the organisation is solvent with no outstanding debt.
The trustees can attest that the Men's £hed is well managed and all
activities are risk assessed to ensure no harm is caused to members or
equipment. Experienced committee members conduct training for new
members on the use of tooling and powered cutting equipment.
3.0 Public Benefit
3.1 What has been done and achieved
The direct benefits which flow from the purpose of improving community
development have been increased participation in community development in
the local area. We have supported all members of the community to become
involved in the development of the local community which gives a sense of
ownership and belonging. Our members have been given opportunities to be
fijlly involved in self-help programmes which improve mental health outcomes.
These activities have ensured that the health and wellbeing needs of all our
members have been supported. There has also been an increase in the
benefits of our work in the wider community some of which is listed below.
Due to the effects of the pandemic the Men's Shed did suffer from a lack of
growth leading to a small reduction in membership and overall performance.

As the charity involves a membership generally of older individuals that was
unsurprising. Nevertheless as society opened up again new members have
been attracted and activities have ramped up again.
A brief descrition of tasks undertaken is listed below..
Construction of outdoor shelters for other charities - Changing Lives Nl
and the Lawrencetown, Lenaderg and Tullylish Community Association
Woodwork classes for the youth of Lurgan YMCA and the ladies of The
Carer Unite Carers Support team
Assistance to the gardening project undertaken by teachers at St John
the Baptist senior school, Moy Road, Portadown. The school children
were shown how to prepare and plant vegetables and flowers. These
were subsequently harvested and enjoyed by the children
Repair of wooden huts and structures including assembly of metal bike
sheds for Bleary Primary School
Assistance to the elderly in Craigavon - garden clearance, including
tree and hedge removal, dismantling old sheds, replacing with a new
shed and ramp for disability scooter. Rearrangement of gate and
entrance to facilitate the access for the scooter storage.
Assistance to the TCV (The Conservation Volunteers) at Eden Villas -
supporting 'the Green Gym,
Evening classes in art and pyrography for the members
Visits to neighbouring sheds in Armagh, Newtownhamilton and
Annaghmore
Visit to the Transport Museum followed by a meal at a local restaurant
Taking part in the TAK£500+ schemes to raise funds for woodworking
equipment
Providing garden benches and planters for local charities e.g. Knitted
Knockers and for individuals and friends of the Shed
Providing support to the local Rotary Club in refurbishing the model
train and providing colourful planters to fit the +rain which is now
proudly displayed by translink outside Portadown railway station
All of the above activities have raised funds for the Shed with each one
helping raise essential funds for the running of the Shed. However the
prices charged as agreed by the Committee are largely established at a
modest rate appropriate to the organisation's ability to pay.

3.2 INhat diffference has the charity made
The charity has more than fulfilled its ambition to help the community as
witnessed by the welcome received by all who benefited.
Six ladies from the the Carers Unite Carers Support Group visited the
Shed for one day per week over 4 weeks to learn basic carpentry skills
making birdboxes and triple layer planters. This proved extremely popular
with the ladies who booked a repeat session this year.
The response from the children and teachers at St John The Baptist
school has been very rewarding - children are losing touch with how food
is grown and how to produce food. This exercise has proven to be very
successful. Representatives were invited back to a school Christmas
concert to say thank you to all school supporters throughout the year.
The Lurgan YMCA recognises the importance of giving young people in
the area something constructive to do and to thereby keep them off the
street. Shed members were invited to come to Lurgan to teach the youth
how to make planters. Thsio entailed taking timber, a chop saw, drills and
other associated kit to site to enable the work to be carried out. This
exercise proved hugely successful resulting in two beautiful planters
proudly displayed on the balcony of their premises. An invite to return has
been given to continue more teaching classes.
The Shed was invited to participate in selling items produced at the shed
at a Christmas market stall at the Lakes Centre in Craigavon. Wooden
Christmas trees, miniature Santas and crofters cottages, turned items,
walking sticks were snapped up to help raise funds for the Shed running
costs. This event proved very successful and helped raise the profile of
the Shed in the locality.
Apart from the benefit to the community there is a bonus of the great
sense of camaraderie and satisfaction gained by the men themselves for
being part of such an effort.
