## **REPORT FROM NIFSP TRUSTEES FOR THE CHARITY COMMISSIONERS FOR THE PERIOD 1 JANUARY TO 31 DECEMBER 2023**

During the year January to December 2023, the Northern Ireland Fund for the Support of Psychoanalysis (NIFSP) has been dormant.

According to the Fund’s Constitution, the declared charitable purposes of the Fund are as follows: to advance education and mental health in the community by supporting financially the study, development, and clinical application of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy, including the provision of low-fee psychoanalytic treatment to individuals who would not otherwise be able to access it.

The main target of the Fund’s activities has been the provision of financial support for the training of psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists who are registered trainees of the Northern Ireland Psychoanalytic Society (NIPaS), which is the only organization in Northern Ireland accredited by the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and/or the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA).

After an unprecedented number of trainees graduated from the accredited training in 2021 and 2022, and since 2 of the remaining trainees were absent for most of the year 2023 on maternity leave, there was no call on the Fund’s resources in the course of 2023. With the recent recruitment of a number of new NIPaS trainees, it is expected that there will be a round of training grants in late 2024 or 2025, which will in all likelihood require some replenishment of NIFSP’s funds. The NIFSP is very much a going concern.
