The Trustees' report
The trustees present their report and the unaudited financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of the Statements of Recommended Practice (SORP) the charity.
Objectives and activities
Progeny Teen Support exists to benefit young people and adults in Northern Ireland who are impacted by anxiety/depression/other mental health difficulties because of trauma or other adverse life events. During this reporting period we have worked on three initiatives Progeny Connect-Ed (which was changed to Progeny Education in this period), Progeny Therapy & Mentoring and Despising The Shame (DTS).
Progeny Education is our post primary learning centre for young people who have been impacted by school anxiety and are no longer attending mainstream school. Our aim is three-fold:
-
To provide academic and life skills tuition. The benefits are increased knowledge and qualifications allowing them to progress to further education /employment. (Advancement of education.) During the reporting period we were able to facilitate GCSE tuition in Maths, English, Business and RE. We also provided tuition to help our young people obtain 4 other GCSE equivalents OCN Information Technology Applications, Personal Development and Employability Skills (The Princes Trust) and OCN Vocational Skills. Young people can attend up to 4 days per week.
-
To provide support and a safe community for these young people by providing opportunities for connection/friendship with others. (Relief of those in need). Often our young people have become socially isolated after withdrawing from school. The benefits are reduced social isolation, improved mental and emotional wellbeing, increased self-esteem, and improved relationships with family..
-
To provide emotional support for the parents of these young people as they navigate the challenges caused by difficult school experiences.
Progeny Counselling and Mentoring exists to provide information, support, professional counselling, and therapeutic interventions for young people affected by anxiety/depression/impaired mental health as a result of trauma or other adverse life event. Here the focus is on recovery from traumatic experiences, delivered by BACP approved counsellors as well as, where appropriate, provision of a dedicated mentor who walks with a young person as they explore together what it means to have a strong sense of Value, Identity and Purpose. The benefits are improved mental and emotional wellbeing, reduction in self-harm/suicide ideation and increase in self-esteem and improved relationships in the lives of these young people. (Advancement of health or saving of lives).
Despising The Shame was birthed during this reporting period. This initiative exists to provide training and support for those impacted by and working in areas of trauma and trauma recovery. The aim is to reduce shame by empowering those impacted and helping them understand that the mental and emotional health struggles they are facing are often due to their stories. The benefits are improved mental and emotional wellbeing, reduced sense of isolation and improved relationships with others. (Advancement of health or saving of lives).
In this reporting year 2024/25, we have focussed on strengthening the Education and Counselling/Mentoring services and launching Despising the Shame.
Achievements and performance
benefit to the beneficiaries.
Progeny Education
During the reporting period April 2024 - March 2025 we supported 16 young people in Progeny Education. Three of these young people were with us for less than 3 months. One left for personal reasons, another due to increased anxiety making it difficult for her to leave the house and the third left after his confidence increased to the extent that he felt able to attend college. The others either completed or are in the process of completing our 2 3-year program.

The Trustees' report (Cont'd)
In May 2024 we took 10 of our young people to do the Rampage Mud Run at The Jungle. They all completed this and had a great sense of achievement as they helped and supported each other along the way. Friendships were forged as a result of this and for one young person in particular this was the catalyst that got him on the journey from isolation to community leading to him being able to attend college the following September.
11 of our young people sat GCSEs at Holy Trinity College (Cookstown) in May/June with 4 graduating from us with between 5-8 GCSEs/equivalents. The others returned to complete their final year with us in September 2024. Our graduates all either went into further training, employment or education.
In September 2024 we started our 4th (academic) year. We continued to provide GCSE tuition in 4 subjects: Maths, English, Business and RE as well as portfolio-based subjects Princes Trust PDE (which became Kings Trust) and OCNs in ICT and Vocational Skills (equivalent to 4 further GCSEs).
During this period we received our second grant from the Community Development and Mental Health Network (CDHN) to run a program in conjunction with a local pharmacy. The Building the Community Pharmacy Partnership (BCPP) Program commenced in September 2024 and ran throughout the remainder of this reporting period. This program aims to build partnership between the community and the pharmacy with the aim of reducing health inequalities. By educating our young people in matters of health (including mental health) we hope to empower them to take control of their own health. Between September 2024 March 2025 sessions were delivered by a pharmacist on Diet & Healthy Eating, Ultra Processed Food and Labelling, Cardiovascular Health, Stroke and Blood pressure, Immune System and Vaccinations. Our young people also took part in a Christmas Candle Making activity. Love for Life came in to deliver a workshop on Healthy Relationships and Aware NI delivered a workshop on Mood Matters.
Young Enterprise Big Market in Belfast in December 2024. As always this was a fantastic opportunity for great skills to be developed and confidence to grow as they learned how to set up and run a business to make profit.
We had our Christmas outing to The Ulster Folk Museum where we were all able to step back in time and discover what it was like to live a simpler life!
Wellbeing sessions continued throughout this period every Wednesday afternoon with a variety of activities baking, crafts, team games, Christianity Explored, and several trips including one to the World War 2 museum at the Braid Centre and another to Portglenone Forest.
Morning devotionals continue with our young people at the start of each day One Simple Truth - an anchor for our young people as they navigate life.
Progeny Counselling and Mentoring Progeny Counselling and Mentoring continues and we had a new therapist join the team in September 2024.
During this period we placed several young people with mentors and continue to offer professional counselling. Approx 10 young people have been supported this year either through mentoring, counselling or both, and we have delivered over 100 sessions of one-to-one support.
Talking therapy and more comprehensive trauma therapy is offered to those young people with deeper wounds.
Informal evaluations are used during the mentoring/counselling relationships to determine effectiveness of the interventions.
Despising The Shame
Despising the Shame ran 3 seminars on consecutive nights in conjunction with Cullybackey Elim in March 2024. The Seminars covered the topic of Healing from Physical, Sexual and Emotional Trauma. On each night there

were 160 180 attendees. Some of these were therapists seeking to learn how to support their clients better, others were those who had been impacted by these issues. Following on from this a number of attendees were connected into therapy and/or mentoring. We had a follow-up seminar in May called Honouring your Story, where many of those who attended the seminars in March had the opportunity to more deeply explore their healing. Approx. 80-100 attended this follow up seminar.
Mitigation of harm
Professional assessments are conducted before each young person commences therapy, and where appropriate, a young person is signposted to their GP if deemed necessary. There is a focus on providing a safe therapeutic space and clinical supervision is undertaken by the counsellor on a regular basis to ensure risk is managed.
For Despising the Shame we had a team of helpers trained in how to support those who were triggered by any of the material covered. Also a Social Worker present to deal with any safeguarding issues and/or disclosures.
Private benefit
Any private benefit obtained by tutors/others who receive payment for their services is incidental to the public receive income this is much lower than could be obtained working in other settings. Our counsellor is currently providing professional counselling as a volunteer.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Progeny Teen Support
We report on the financial statements of the charitable company for the year ended 31st March 2025, which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, Balance Sheet and related notes, set out on pages 7 to 12. The financial reporting framework that has been applied in their preparation is the Companies Act 2006 and “Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102 )” (as amended for accounting periods commencing 1 January 2016).
Respective responsibilities of directors and independent examiner
The charity's Trustees (who are also the Directors of Progeny Teen Support Limited for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with section 63 of the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008. The charity's Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 65 of the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2013 and that an independent examination is needed.
It is our responsibility to:
-
(i) examine the accounts under section 65 of the 2013 Act;
-
(ii) to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 65(9)(b) of the Charities Act; and
-
(iii) state whether particular matters have come to our attention
Basis of independent examiner's report
Our examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland under section 65(9)(b). An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters.
The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the independent examiner's statement below.
My role is to state whether any material matters have come to my attention giving me cause to believe:
-
That accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 63 of the Charities Act
-
That the financial statements do not accord with those accounting records
-
That the financial statements do not comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act
-
That there is further information needed for a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
Independent Examiner's statement
I have completed my examination and have no concerns in respect of the matters (1) to (4) listed above and in connection with following the Directions of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, I have found no matters that require drawing to your attention.
