Financial instruments
Objecllves aiidp¢plleleJ
The ¢hai'ity'S aclivilies expose it to a number of financial risks including credil risk, cash flow risk and liquidity
risk. The use of finanLial derivatives 15 governed by the charity's policies approved by the board ot trustees,
which provide written principles on the use of financial derivatives lo manage these risks. The charity does not
use derivative financial instrumenls for speculative purposes.
Ca.shflow rlsk
The charity's aclivilies expose il primarily i() the financial risks of changes in foreign currency exchange rates
and interest rates. The charity uses foreign exchangye fonvard contracts and inleresl rate swap contracts lo hedgje
these exposures.
Interest bearing assets and liabilities are held at fixed rale lo ensure certainty of cash flows.
Credll rlsk
The charity's principal financial assets are bank balances and cash, trade and other receivables. and investInent5.
The charity's credit risk is priinarily attributable lo ils trade receivables. The amounts presented in the balance
sheet are net of allowances for doubtful receivables. An allowance for inipainiienl is made where there is an
identified loss eveni which, based on previous experience, is evid¢i)ce of a reduction in th¢ recoverability of thc
cash flows.
The credil risk on liquid funds and derivative tiiiancial instruments is liiiiited because the counterparties are
banks with high credit-ralin&)s assigi)ed by international credil-rating agencies.
The charity has no sig)nifiLanl concenli'ation of cr¢dil risk, with exposure spread over a large number of
counterparties and customers.
Llquldity rl.sk
In order to mainlain liquidity 10 ensure Il)al sufficient funds are available for ongoing operations and future
developinents. the charily uses a Inixture of long-terin and short-leri)I debt fii)ance.
Further details regarding liquidity risk can be found in the Staten)ent of accounting policies in tlie financial
