The charity is wholly owned by Home Start Down District, a registered charity. Its directors also comprise the Board of Trustees of Home Start Down District. It is a private company limited by guarantee, it is controlled by its Memorandum and Articles of Association. OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Its sole purpose is to assist by providing funds for the charitable activities of its owner, Home Start Down District by engaging in profitable trading as a charity shop Home-start is one of the leading family support charities in the UK and Home-start Down District as an associate member has been operating since 1990. Funded by the statutory sector as well as by other grant making organisations, the group provide invaluable support to families in the Downpatrick and wider area with outreach in both Newcastle and Ballynahinch. The objective of Home Start Down District is a) to safeguard, protect and preserve the good health, both mental and physical of children and parents of children- b) to prevent cruelty to or maltreatment of children,. c) to relieve sickness, poverty and need amongst children and parents of children., d) to promote the education of the public in better standards of child care,. principally but not exclusively within the area of Down District and its environs e) raise funds, inter alia, by retailing articles donated to the company for the furtherance of the aforementioned objects. These funds will provide direct benefits which flow from our purposes to include" improved health outcomes and improved uptake of health appointments. We make happier, safer children and happier safer homes. As a result fewer children suffer cruelty or maltreatment. Parents and children feel less marginalised. Families make better use of local services and are less isolated and have wider horizons. Families are better able to cope with their needs. Families develop improved coping strategies and parents become more confident through increased education in childcare standards. The beneficiaries of our purposes are families who are experiencing difficulties or suffering stress and who have at least one child under 5 years of age and live in the Area of Benefit. PUBLIC BENEFIT STATEMENT In setting objectives and planning activities for the year the Trustees have given careful consideration to the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland's guidance on public benefit and are confident that the activities have helped to achieve the charity's purposes and provide a benefit to the beneficiaries. FINANCIAL RESULTS The main source of income of the charity is sales from a Charity Shop. FINANCIAL RESERVES The Charity does not have a specific policy on reserves, but the Treasurer aims to maintain enough money in the bank account to fund all forthcoming expenses. RISK MANAGEMENT The trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error.
