Governing doct4ment
The John And Pat Hume Foundation For Peaceful Change And Reconciliation is a charitable company limited by
guarantee not having a shar¢ capital. The company is recognised as a charity by the Charity Commission Nt (registration
number NIC107981). The company was incorporat¢d on 18 December 2019 and the gov¢rning document of the entity is
tb¢ Articl¢s of Association dat¢d 24 March 2020.
Organisational slnlclure
The company is manag¢d by the trustees who are chosen based on their skills and professional backgrounds so as to
ensure a wide range of experi¢nce is repres¢nted on the board. Tn￿te¢S meet bi-monthly to review perfonnanc¢,
det¢rniine strategie5, ass¢ss risk and plan future policies.
The Foundation is managed daily by secretary Tim Attwood and a senior employee who are responsible for ensuring that
The John And Pat Hume Foundation complies with all statutory regulations.
The Foundation is an qual opportunities ¢mploy¢r committ¢d to positiv¢ policies on recrnitm¢nt, training and ¢ar¢¢r
development for staff members (and potential staff members) regardless of marital status, religion, ethnic origin or

New trustees are nominated by current twstees. Induction and training of new trustees is provided by existing trustees
and employees.
Principal rish and 1￿certainti¢￿
The trustees have conducted their own review of the major risks to which the company is exposed and systems have been
established to mitigate those risks. The trustees continually monitor their exposure to fthancial risk. Giv¢n the size of the
ompany> the trustees have not del¢gated the responsibility of monitoring financial risk to a sub committee.
The financial viability and sustainability of the company is a major risk recognis¢d. The ttustees continually strive to
source additional or new funding.
Business and fmancial risk is managed by ensuring appropriate staff, with the necessary experience, are in place and
budgcts and forecasts are prepared and reported on monthly. The reporting network makes use of IT Systems such as
Word and Ex¢¢1 and other software packages which are continuously updated and maintained.
The Centres, principal financial assets and liabilities includes debtor5, cash and creditors. Associated risks include
liquidity risk. To minimize liquidity risk, material purchases are carefully planned to ensure appropriate cash flows exist
to meet operational costs.
Internal risks ar¢ minimised by the implementation of controls and procedures for authorisation of all transactions.

Objectives and %¢tivities
The principal objectives of the foundation are
to advance non-violent pea¢ethl change-making for present and ￿tUre generations iti both divided societies nationally
and confli¢t zones internationally) encompasslng social and economic justice, democratic progress, and the building of
inclusive and resilient communities as fundamental comerstones of sustained pea¢e'
To promote reconciliation and nurture bonds of collaboration, embedding principles of justi¢e, inclusion, mutual
understanding and trust between individuals and groups in conflict nationally and internationally.
Th¢ "Mission" of th¢ trustees is to to promote and advance John and Pat Hume's legacy of a peaceful and non-violent
philosophy of change founded on their principles that:
Peaceful chang¢ is a collaborative process that is thlly inclusive.
Peace￿1 change is built on a respect for difference; and
- Peaceful change takes a long-terni view and supports evolving perspectives.
Public benefit
The Tn￿te¢S considered guidance from the Chaiity Commission for Northern Ireland in relation to the public benefit
statement. The sta￿tOry guidance states the objects and prin¢ip81 activities of the charity which show that the public
benefit that "will flow from the purposes of the foundation are increased learning, awareness and ¢xpeTience to enhance
peaceful and non-violent changemaking for the benefit of individuals* groups and communiti¢s impacted by conflict and
violence in divided communities in Northern Ireland, Ireland and conflict zon¢s internationally."

The EU Parliament Office, in partnership with UU and the Hume Foundation launched an exhibition in UU Magee about
John Hume in Europ¢ and to n]ark the Good Friday Agreement.
February
HiriroshimatNagasaki Foundation
T.he Hume Foundation dev.gloped, a relationship with HiroshIti￿agaSakl
Foundation to promote peace and reconciliation. As part of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki exhibition in the Linenhall Library,
the Hume Foundation hosted an online event in February 2024 with a testimonial from Mrs. T¢ruko Yahati a Hiroshima
survivo[ and a vidim's repr¢sentative Alex Bunting from WAVE NI.
Building Common Ground, Recon¢iling Relations.. Belfast, Dublin, London. The Hume Foundation, in association with
IIEA in Dublin, hosted a Building Common Ground discussion in February 2024 with Jarlath Kearney, Sen. Emer Currie
and David Graham, fornier DUP Special Adviser.
Westminster - Claire Hanna MP and Gavin Robinson MP spoke in Westminster on Building Common Ground - A New
Start for East West Relationships.

The Hume Foundation continued to work in pathership with Glencree Peace & Reconciliation Centre and Jo Cox

The Hume Foundation facilitated an event with NILGA and AILG (Councillor organisations North and South) on 'Cross
Bord¢r Project on the Promotion of Leadership at Local Level and Civility in Public Life,.

EU Parliament OtTice John Hume Exhibition Coleraine
The EU Parliament Office, in partnership with UU and the Hume Foundation, launched th¢ John Hume "H¢ Made Hope
and History Rhyme" exhibition in UU Colerain¢ about John Hume in Europe and to nmrk the Good Friday Agreement. It
honoured the work of Dr Séan Farren.
Douglass Week
The 4th annual Douglassweek took place in April 2024 in Belfast. The Douglassweek event series celebrates and
advances the legacy of Frederick Douglass around the world.
Peace Summit 2024
As the lead partner, the John and Pat Hume Foundation negotiated funding with the Intemational Fund for Ireland for
Peace Summit 2024, a partnership which included The Holywell Trust, YouthAction NI, Ulster Unlversity, the Glencree
Centre for Peace and Reconciliation, Community Dialogue, and Integrated Education Fund.

The John and Pat Hume Foundation hosted a seminar on The SunnirAgdale Agreement- 50 years on in May 2024 in
Ulster University, Belfast Campus.

University of Glasgow- Our Heritage, Our Stories Project
The University of Glasgow with Leverhulme funding developed Our Heritage, Our Stories.. Linking and searching
community-generated digital content to develop the people's national collection.
The Hume Foundation secured funding for the digitalisation of 34 original John Hume Tapes recorded in 1985 by Barry
White for his book entitled John Hume.. Statesman of the Troubles and digitalisation of a number of videos and
recording of 20 individual video messages from quiet peacemakers.

The John And Pat Hume Foundation For Peacful Change And Reconciliation, similar to other charitable organisations,
arc experiencing r¢ductions in funding. It is essential that we contilluously monitor expenditure and operate
economically whilst rnaintaining an efficient and effective service and, where possible, rcduce reliance on publi¢
funding. Incotne for the year was £101.895 (2023 L195,U-15). Exp¢nditUTe for the yedr Wds £144.855 (2023
£205,004). A detailed analysis of iiicome and exptsndituie is provided in notes 2 to 7 of the fiiiaiicial Slat¢mciils. The
re5111ting deficit at 31 D¢¢einber 2024 was £42,9C)0 (2023 dcficit £9,929). N¢t assets at the balai)ce sli¢et (11( te were
£26,718 (2024 - £69,678). Given the difficult circumstances in which the foundation find5 Itself, the trustees are satisfied
with the perforniance and results of the charitable company during the year.
Annual funding for core services provided by th¢ Foundation from th¢ International Fund for Ir¢land and the Department
of Foreign Affairs, continues to be vital to the daily operations.
R¢serYes
The trustees have examined the charitys requirements for reserves taking into account the risks that have been
recognised. The unTestricted reserve requirement, should major funding Streams end, is esliinated to be betweeii Ilii'eo
and six months of operating costs, which in the event of closure woiild also inclLI(le rcdiindancies. The Iriislces
ontlnuously monitor this requirement.

1.2. Fund accounting
The funds of the charitable company consists of restricted funds and unrestricted fimds,
General funds are unrestricted fjjnds which are available for use at the discretion of the trustees ID ￿rther￿nCe of
the objects of the charity and have not been designated for other purposes.
Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with SPLcific restriction8 imposed by donors. The

1.3. Incoming resources
All incoming rcsources are included in the ststement of fmancial activities when thg charity is entitlcd to th¢
income, any perforniance conditions attached to th¢ income have been met and the amount can be quantified with
reasonable accuracy. The following specific policies are appli¢d to particular categories of income:
Revenue grants are recognis¢d as income when receivable. Donations and gifts are included in full In the
statement of f￿ancial activities when receivable.
1.4. Resources expended
Expeiiditure is recognised on an acciiial basis as a liability is incurrtyd. ExpeiidiLurc is split between restricted and
unr¢stricted expcndihire. Unrests-icted ¢xpenditur¢ relat¢s to unrestricted income and to mELnag¥niciit and gei)cral
administration of the charity and restricted expendityre is as set out in the letters of offer.
Charitable expcnditure comprises those wsts incurred by the charity in the delivery of its activities and services
for it5 ben¢fi¢iaries. It includes both costs that can be allocat¢d directly to such a¢tivitiLs and those costs ot an
indirect naiur¢ necessary to support them.

1.5. Debtors and creditors receivablelpayable
Debtors and prepayments are recognised at the settlement amount due after trade discount.
Creditors are recognised where the charity has a pr¢sent obligation resulting from a past event that will result in a
payment to a third party and th¢ amount can be reliably estinuted.
1.6. Financial instruments
A financial asset or liability is recognised only when the company becomes a party to the contractual provisions
of the arrangement.
1.7. Judgements and key sources of unecrtainty
In applyiiig a¢¢oiinting policies, the Tnistees ure required to make judgements and cstimates on an ongoing basis
about tli¢ carrying value of compiiny assets und liabilities. If revision is required, the revision is r¢cognised in that
period iogether with future periods if necessary. Any revision will affect the estimates tharg¢d in the Statem¢nt of
Financial Activiti¢s.
