the children have an opportunity to work with individuals and groups on a cross
community basis.

Overview of the o
anlsatlon
Located in the Lower Shankill area of Belfast, Denmark Street Community Centre has
been operatlng as a voluntary communlty facility for nearly 40years.
Denmark Street Community Centre is supportin8 the council to achieve its objectives
In terms of providing a voice for local concerns, encouraging people to become more
active in thelr communities and meetlng local needs as well as providing local
services for children & young people, adults and senior citizens.

Pro

Young people regularly attend the centre on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday
nighvs 6:30 till 8:00 for ages 5-18 years old.
Activities include discos, games night eg: Dodgeball, pool tables. Tennis table, air
hockey, table top games, computers and cookin8 classes with kids eg: cooking buns,
soda pizzas. Chicken nuggets and chips and makin8 pancakes with chocolate.
There is a group called The Shankill table tennis club which use the Centre on a
Tuesday and Thursday night 7:30pm-9:30pm.

The children did 4 workshop sessions with the Beat about sprin8. They took part in
making a banner with flowers on it and also made headbands which the children
really enjoyed. Once the workshop had been completed they took part in
spring/easter parade with the lower Old Park Community Group which started in the
Old Park and made its way down to Denmark Street Community Centre. There wa5
entertainment put on outside the centre eg puppet show, music, karaoke, face
painting and African drumming. At the end of it all each child that took part received
an easter egg.

The leaders did some cooking classes with the children where they made plzza sodas,
chicken nugsets and chips. For Easter they made bird nest buns, cornflake buns
which they took home for their parents. The children really enjoyed the cooking
classes. They also made Easter cards and some art stuff which they also took home
with them.
tember 2022
In July and Au8USt we ran a 4 weeks summer scheme with 25-30 chlldren taking part
each day from Ipm - 3:30pm, then a8aln from 6pm- 8pm Monday- Thursday. Friday
was held for staff meetings on preparin8 the next weeks activities. The children took
part in different act5vltles eg,, table top 8ames, arts and crafts, sports activities
outside such as football and a mlnl sports day which gave the children plenty of
exerclse. Some cooking classes, trip5 away for eg.. Holywood Park and beach. Belfast
Zoo, Happy Town, Bowlin8, Stormont Park and Jordanstown park. The children
walked to the top of Black Mountain where we stopped for a packed lunch.
At the end of the 4 weeks we dld a weekend away to Drumshanbo Co. Leitrim from
26th-29 . The children took part In a team buildin8 exercise with 20 children from
the local primary school. The children worked well together. On Saturday morning
the leaders took both groups of children out on the boats and some went swimming
on the lake; the children had a lovely time. In the afternoon we started a kite
workshop where each child designed and made their very own kites. When finished
making they experlenced flyin8 them outside. Some children experienced fishing for
the first time also. We put the bouncy castle up and had a disco which the children
really enjoyed.

On Sunday the children took a walk throu8h the Shannon walkway {woodlands) from
Drumshanbo to Carrlck on Shannon where they went shopping. After lunch the
children did some arts and crafts activities.
We opened up the trampoline out the back and let the children take turns whlle the
rest did arts with other leaders in the bi8 room In the centre. Other nights we did arts
and crafts Eg: we did a plaster paris workshop were the children made plaster
plaques with their hand print in them for their parents as memories keepsakes and
once the plaster had dried the children painted them.

The Newlodge Arts came into the centre and did 4 sessions with the children for the
Halloween parade in Alexander Park Avenue. The children made gnomes and magic
mirrors from snow white and the seven dwarfs which were laid out around the park
on the night of the parade. The parade left the Crumlin Road jail, up Clifton Park
Avenue along the Cavehill Road up the Antrim Road and into the Park where there
was lots of light shows. arts activities, a puppet show, around a campfire were the
children got the chance to melt marshmallows over the fire with help from the
organlsers. There was also a Little Mix trlbute act on the stage which all the children
loved and to finish off the night there was a big firework display. It was another
amazing event by the Newlodge arts.
The children did a sponsored sleepover where they raised money to get resources for
the new play garden when it is finished so that they could grow fruit and veg In the
new flower bed once It's opened. The community Police alon8 the Lower Shanklll
Community Association and Community Restoratlve Justlce brought in pizzas, chips,
chicken nuggets• juice and crisps for the chlldren. The pollce spoke to children about
safety issues online and 5tran8er danger and handed out pens pencils rulers and
stlckers alon8 wlth ma8nets. The children all look forward to havlng another
sleepover in the centre some time soon.

We were allocated money from the Belfast Clty Council Micro Grant to do some trips.
The first trip took place at Glengormley bowling alley. We started to do some
Christmas arts and crafts. We made 3D present boxes and filled them with sweet5 for
the children to take home as well and some decorations that they hung from the
christmas tree in the ￿ntre. Thanks to our partner group Lower Shankill community

we were able to visit the Crumlin Road jail where the children were able to meet
Santa and received a selection box and photo.
We were taken into Cuffs restaurant where they were all greeted with a lovely meal
and the children all enjoyed the experience. The children then attended the centre
for a Christmas disco which went quite well and was enjoyed. We attended the
Waterfront Hall for their annual Christmas panto where they watched Aladdin the
musical. They each received a party box while watchin8 the panto. The next day the
children attended the centre where we had a Christmas party before the centre
closed for the Christmas holidays.
Janua
- March 2023
Coming back in the New Year we 8Ot all the children and leaders together and asked
had anybody 8Ot any new ideas of what they would like to do in the centre for the
comin8 weeks and months ahead. The children came up with some 8ood ideas eg:
cookin8 classes, hair and beauty classes, getting a dance teacher in to learn different
dances like hip hop, scottish dancing, disco dancin8. The bols asked if they could
have someone come in for football and boxin8. There was a cooking class where the
children made biscuits and put edible valentines, stickers on them to take home for
their family members. We also made valentine cards to take home with their biscuits.
The second Micro trip was a walk up Divis mountain where the children brought
packed lunch and made the day of it. Pancake Tuesday the children made pancakes
and they had a choice of toppin8S that they could put on. The children and leaders all
really enjoyed the ni8ht.
The Beats workshop came in and delivered two sessions of art where they made
costumes to take part in the annual St Patrick day parade which took place on Friday
17th March. Their children love taking part in this every year.
We did a workshop with the children where they made flower baskets from cards,
handmade flowers from tissue paper for their mums for Motherfs day along with
lovey cards. The 3rd Micro grant trip was done in Dundonald Ice Bowl where the
children went to Indian land.
The management committee of Denmark Street community centre had been
contacted by the Lower Shankill Community Association about the use of the centre

to hold meetings with ￿sIdentS and to continue to remain as a key resource for the
wider community.
