HTANI’s stated objectives are to enhance the professional development of history teachers through the organisation of events and the production and dissemination of educational resources. In addition, it represented teacher perspectives on the CRC Roundtable on the Decade of Centenaries and promoted its teaching materials at a CRC Resource Fair at Stormont. A resource on Partition, co-authored by Jim McBride of HTANI and Professor Tim Bowman, University of Canterbury was launched at PRONI. Members, also, cooperated with the Oral History Society to produce an article for the Oral History Journal on using oral history in schools.

Internationally, the HTANI President Dr Alan McCully was selected to join the Observatory for History Teaching in Europe at the Council of Europe. He also addressed the US based Social Studies Education Conference in Dublin. The secretary, Jim McBride, travelled to Moscow to attend the World Congress of History Teachers accompanied by his recent textbook on Russian history.
