EGLINTON MEN'S SHED
YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023
TRUSTEES, REPORT
ThÈs is our second year of fom]al reportiiig to the Charity Coininission. This is a report for
the fiijancial year April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 as ali integral part of the process to
complete and approve the Aniiual Accounts for this period.
Full reporting consistent with the Charity Commission's annual reporting requiremeiits will
be completed to meet the submission deadline of 3110112024 set by the Charity Coinmission
for Northern Irelaiid.
Current Trustees:
Alastair Davidson (Chainnan), David Craig (Secretary), Sam Parkhill, Richard Manning
(appointed Sept, 2022).
It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Trustee, Gerard O'Donnell oil
Noveinber 25, 2022. Gerard was a founder inember and tlie driving force behind the
establishinent of our Meii's Shed. His considerable contributions will be greatly missed.
It is inteiided to appoint a n¢w trustee at our upcoining AGM.
The Trustees inet twice during the reporting period.
At each ineeting we included:
Recapping on the responsibilities of Trustees and confinning each person's intent to
reinain in position and to accept these responsibilitics.
All 4 current trustees wish to rcinain in place and accept th¢ rcspoiisibilities of
a trustee of a registered charity.
Reviewing the Public Benefit Stateinent of Eglinton Men's Shed and reflecting on our
perfonnance consistent with tliis statement.
We remain confldent that we continue to satisfy the intent of our Public
Benefit Stateinent.
Taking stock of our financial position and the continued viability of our eiiterprise.
We r￿llain fully satisfied with the managing & accounting processes and
operation of the Shed's Manageinent Committee (this committee had 6 fonnal
meetings during the year).
In particular, we applaud the continued diligence of Bob Parke who leads
efforts to secure appi"opriate grant fundiiig to suppleinent our income. We
reinain confident with regard to our financial viability and our ability to
continue consisteiit with the declared puryoses of our org1￿]isation.
Achievements & Performance
Over the reporting period, as we started to emerge from the darkest period of the COVID
crisis, the pressure from our members to re-open and re-energise all our core activities had

made it clear to us that what we offer is an invaluable resource, way beyoiid our original
expectations. The fact that over tlie period we have not Iost any meinbers, (other than one
Ineinber passing away, and on¢ moviiig to Cavan), but rather gaii)cd a couple, is tribute to
what we do aiid a great encourageinent to contiiiue.
Coiisequeiitly this period has been one of recovering froin and consolidation of activities after
the Covid-19 pandeinic We continued to strive successfully to satisfy the objects of our
organisation set out in our goveniing document:
To promote personal developinent, positive ineiital health and physical activities for
the benefit of individuals froin in and around the village of Eglinton and district, to
advance the health, wellbeiiig aiid education of its members by providing a safe aiid
happy environment where the meinbers can, in the compaiiy of others:
i) Pursue Iiobbies, pastimes and interests,
ii) Learn iiew skills, practise and pass on old skills,
iii) Proinote their own aiid otlier Inen's healtli and well-being.
iv) Help reduce feelings of social isolation and loneliness.
With the gradual easing of restrictioiis due to the Covid-19 pand￿ll]C, life in our Shed
gradually returned to some sort of nonnality althougli there has been some hcsitancy by a few
of our oldei" and inore vulnerable meinbers due to lingeriiig misgivings about health risks that
w¢ had to overcoine to get thein fully engaged.
Our doors were opened on 254 days in the review period, although this does not include
figures for the polytunnel when the main building was closed, that is, weekends for wateriiig
etc. Our "official" opening days (3 pcr week) accounts for 156 days, so it is clear that the
desire, cominitmeiit and iieed to use the facilities had resulted in many additional days of
opening.
The accuinulated "Volunteer Hours" were w¢lL in excess of 4,000 hrs, as estimated via our
sigiiing-in book (altliough this does not include figures for the polytunnel).
The figures above clearly demoiistrate the coiitinuing cominitment of the Officers and
Cominittee to ensure that the Shed was available to serve its meinbers/volunteers, and that the
members clearly felt the benefits, othenvise their attendance would not have been maintained
at such a high level.
The main hub of internal activity iii the Shed continued to be the main workshop with a
Iiwnber of teain and individual woodworking projects.
A key expansion of our activities has been bringing to fruition the provision of metal working
activities ￿ld provision of essential instruction on Jnetal working. Soine small projects started
in May, 2022 with the facility beii)g fully coinmissioiied by Septeinber, 2022. Equipinent
available for use incudes a inetal band saw, a drill press, a metal cut-off saw, a pedestal
griiider, an electric welder plus a variety of hand tools. Projects included making shelving and
racks for cominuiiity groups in the village.
Our prograinme of talks was resumed aiid we held three talks tliat were open to members,
their families aiid noii-lnembers. These were well attended.

Our walking group, which meets oil Tuesdays, continued activities although they were often
frustrated by inclaneiit weather.
The flow of inemberslvolunteers through our doors remains clear evidence of the value of
what we offer. One of tlie inost important aspects of our activities contiiiues to be the
provisioii of a warni, safe, coiivivial space for inembers and guests to visit and use, whether
they wished to be involved in woodwork, Inetalwork, gardening, playing pool, using our free
library, or simply sittirAg down for a coffee and a chat. The coinradeship of shared endeavours
serves to strengthen bonds and helps eliminate loneliness and soclal isolation. All these
activities contributed in a very significant inanner to the achieveirAent of our objectives as
listed above.
Our endeavours to share and pass on skills in our various workshops ensure active and
positive participation in learning processes, and also serve to enhance the skills of the
trainers. As a "on¢-off' project we have recently coinpleted the making of 70 nesting boxes
for kestrels and 50 nomal bird nesting boxes for a joint coinmercial/coininunity project in the
Strathfoyle area. This has meant adapting our usual "single piece" workiiig to a more
"production-line" Inethod, with several people beiiig tasked with specific jobs, to achieve the
scale of preparation required. This has beeii a most interesting learning process, and will
stand us in good stead should any similar enquiries come our way in the future.
AlongF With our partners, Egliiiton Aiinual Show Coininittee and Eglintoii Coinmunity House,
we have continued to inaintain a wÈd¢ variety of floral displays across the village, including
plantcrs attached to the bcnches which we inade a few years ago, as well as a nUiTTrber of
freestanding pI￿lterS made in our workshop. Tliis work is ongoing and we eiivisage it being
further developed as we inove forward.
When the local ethical food retailcr beC￿lle a co-operative venture having commenced soine
years ago as a private enterprise, we assisted in reconfiguring the preinises to make them
Inore customer fiiendly, and the steady growth of that busincss lias coiitributed to tlic
environment with its einphasis on plastic-free packaging and, where possible, low "food-
miles" stockiiig. This in turn is a benefit to local agricultural producers of fruit, vegetables,
dairy products, oils etc. We are proud to be a contributor to this success story.
Part of this outreach has resulted in our workshops doing jobs for all three local Churches,
from creating life-sized Christinas Crib figures for St. Canice's, C. of l., to repairing seats for
Faughanvale Presbyterian Church, and repairing, refurbishing and polishing the Sanctus Bell
for Star of the Sea Church (R.C.) iii Faughanvale. Such activities contribute to cross-
cominunity fellowship which is so important to nurture our local society.
Overall our Manageineiit Cominittee has continued to be foThvard looking to enhance our
offeriiig to existiiig members and to attract more participation from our local cominunity:
During this reporting period detailed planiiing was Ca￿led out for an Open Day in
April, 2023
Overseeing of all of the work to complete and cominission a metalworking facility
and to provide essential training to enable safe operation.
Supportiiig gradual iinproveinent of the facilities in our Polytunnel with the
installation of an irrigation systffln in the tunnel and new cold frames outside the
tunnel. All this has all led to increased use of the facilities and attracted ill￿nbers to

further engage in healthy, open air physical activity which has proved extremely
beneficial to all those involved.
Further inodificationslimproveinents have been made to our grounds iiicluding
resurfacing of the access road to the Polytuniiel.
Fosteiiiig liiiks with the wider Irish Men's Sheds organisation and participating in
various forums and workshops
lii suininary tlie Trustees are coiifident that the overall management of Eglintoii Meii, s Shed
continued to be to a high standard, are confiderAt of the probity of its Officers and Coinmittee
aiid al'e confident that Eglintoii Meii, s Slied has a sustaiiiable futur¢.
Signed on behalf of the Trustees:
David Craig
