Chairmans report 22-23

Firstly may I say that we in Lurig Drama Group are always looking for new members to join us to allow us to continue putting on productions to the high standard we are known for.

Group members have a wide range of talents from acting and singing, set painting, costume making, lighting and sound, set construction and prop making.

We would be pleased to hear from anyone who wishes to join us.

Not only do we perform our own work in our base in Cushendall Golf Club, we also feel that we are a very useful facility in the community.

Professional companies performing in the golf club regularly use not only our light and sound equipment, but also the talents of our technical team.

Community groups and local schools using the stage are also assisted by our technical team.

Out in the community we have provided sound and lighting for concerts, fashion shows and many other fundraising events.

I thank the technical team who regularly give many hours to provide sound and lighting for a number of community events.. such as U3A, Glens Youth Theatre, GlensStorytelling Festival, professional productions and many more.

In May 2022 Lurig Drama Group performed “Little Gem” by Elaine Murphy as a rehearsed reading.

This took place in The Old Church Centre Cushendun as part of their Big Arts Festival. We performed to a full house and the production was very well received.

James Joyce’s Ulysses was first published in 1922. To celebrate this centenary we held an evening of music and readings from Joyce’s Ulysses. Members and guests dressed in costumes of the era and sang songs and performed readings from the play.

It was a very successful event which hopefully will be developed and continued annually on Bloomsday.

Traditionally, in August, Lurig Drama group provide a float or similar for the annual street party which is the highlight of The Heart of the Glens Festival.

This year was no exception and I thank all those involved.

Following on from the success of the rehearsed reading, in October 2022 we combined a production “ Little Gem” together with a musical session of songs and poetry of “The Gold Rush”.

This was an extremely popular and successful evening.

Rehearsals commenced in 2022 for our production of “Widows Paradise” by Sam Cree with performances due to take place in May 2023.

All in all we have much to celebrate and the continued support of our audiences leaves us in fairly healthy financial position.

And finally…. Over the years, Lurig Drama Group has earned the reputation of being a friendly drama group presenting high quality productions while not being afraid to take on challenging pieces.

We have a loyal following in the community and we are fortunate to have rehearsal and performing premises in Cushendall Golf Club. We are very grateful to the club for their continued support.

And finally finally …. a huge thanks to all those who have been involved in any way in Lurig Drama Group and especially the committee whose collective efforts and commitment of time and effort have developed such a high standard of social and cultural entertainment in Cushendall.
