2[nd] Portstewart Rangers report for 2024/2025
We currently have 14 Rangers with 7 Guides moving up in January. We have one girl who is a Young leader with a Brownie Unit and one who is a Young Advocate on the national Guiding council.
We’ve been continuing to follow the Guiding programme working on Unit Meeting Activities and Skills Builders as well as enjoying other activities and lots of cooking including making armpit fudge! Some Rangers attended the Remembrance Day parade. They used their pyrography skills to make some Christmas decorations for Portstewart Presbyterian’s Christmas Tree Festival.
Some of the ‘new’ Rangers also enjoyed the W5 sleepover with the Guides.
They completed the Make Change stage 5 Skillsbuilder with collecting food for the food bank. At present they are doing their Protesting badge. This badge and lots of other activities are being inspired by a 2025 calendar of ‘Game changing Women’. So far we’ve down a night of Climate change activities inspired by Greta Thurnberg; the Protesting badge - Rosa Parks; Express Myself unit meetings activities - Elizabeth Barret-Browning.
They joined the Guides in finishing the Ulster Scots Challenge badge with a great evening learning some Scottish dancing. They also took part in the Ulster Goes Wild challenge planning food for herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. They also enjoyed making a great fuss of the dog that accompanied the dog trainer who visited as well as learning a lot about being a responsible dog owner.
Another challenge badge they enjoyed was the ‘Adventures in the Dark’ which included performing a shadow puppet show for the Guides and trying out sound effects to tell a story.
They’ve been learning some new DIY skills including making and using their own spirit level and doing some tiling.
They enjoyed planning the Great guiding Games and were enthusiastic completing the challenges!
