Strategic report
The following sections lor achievements and performance and financial roview form the strategic
report ol the ¢harily.
Achievements and pertormance
Over the past year The Men's Advisory Project has continued to work as th8 lead. specialist agency
supporting men who have laced abuse in Northern Ireland. The requirgment from services post the
Covid pandemic saw only a limited reduction. We worked hard lo follow and administer BACP
guidelines and develop safe processes, policies and procedures lo support and upskill our counsollors
lo work safely online and via telephone and as they returned lo ollering serwces lace lo lace. Service
user numbers have continued al a high level in all areas ol the country, due lo the continued dedication
ol slafl and volunteers and the excellent network ol other agencies. both slalulory and communlly and
voluntary. that we work with each day lo ensure male victims and survivors have spgcialisl and quality
assured services to support their wide-ran9ing needs.
We have seen an Increase in service users who have laced inlra-lamilial domestic abuse and we
worked hard lo understand Ihls sligmatised and hard to reach group. Especially we havB begun the
work lo support younger men who have laced domestic abuse their enlirg live5 and hav9 had limited
support tor this trauma or in how lo manage their lives without support outside these homes. Outreach
lully qualified volunteer counsellors work in each Trust area in Northern Ireland and are supported by
coordinators in the Western Trust and Bellasl areas. Support required by men from rural areas was at
the highest since our inception and we have learned that a blended approach lo service delivery will
continue to support men who live lar from other Servi￿S. Supwrt from the PCSPS allowed us io
support this additional work and we musl thank them lor their understanding and sUPPOrt as we further
develop services lo men and offer them the security ol information regarding legal Services and being
part of a safer community. The Men's Advisory Project has been rated very good or excellent by the
majority ol its service users and we wish lo uphold this standard in Coming years.
Lack ol support by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive via Supporting People means we are
unable
lo provide floating support and outreach services lo men lacing homelessness due lo
¢*imestic abuse. This prevents us from having the abilily lo carry out the dedicated work required lo
support traumalised and homeless men who have faced abuse. We are bereli that men who are
homeless due to abuse being placed into mixed use Hostels wilhoul dedicalgd and specialist
support and we cannot understand the ineqtjalily ol support lor those abused men and their lamilies
who are homeless or at risk ol losing their tenancies due lo domestic abuse. This dillerence in
provislon is one we will examine with others as the year progresses.

The majority ol men we support are in Crisis, still living with their abLJser oi lacing extensive dangerous
post separation abuse. The tnen therefore initially require a sale space where they can receiv8
informed. non-judgemenlal services ol Crisis support to allow them lo understand and explore their
options and lo risk assess and safely plan to exit the relationship andlor Iwe safely with their children.
These men ollen require Iherapeullc support trom the first call and we have been responsive to lo
these needs, ensuring only Th)unsellors are employed in the Charity. This year we provlded 4221
counselling hours and supported 1011 men across all of Northern Ireland Sn locussed and dedicated 1-
2-1 support... Wilhoul the support ol volunteer counsellors and specialist support workers Northern
Ireland would not have a service lor male victims ol abuse. We thank them wholeheartedly. This lack
ol funded service provision is a disgrace, ean only show dedication lo inequality and is something lor
our Assembly to lace in the upcoming years.
In this yeai the Men's Advisory Project supported Government in Advi50ry Groups, Dorngsllc and
Sexual Violence Partnerships, Consullalions and Operational Boards. We put the needs and voice of
male victims ol domestic and sexual abuse into all arenas. Importantly, we represent the needs of
men who have lost their lives lo Domestic Homi¢ido and represent the learning needs and inject the
voice ol the male victim into each Domestic Homicide Panel convened lo support a man who lost hls
life. This year we have lake part in six panels.
We wish to thank our partner organisalions in Victim Support Northern Ireland, Nexus. Bellasl and
Lisburn Women's Aid, Fo￿e Family Justice Cenlre, Police Service ol Northern Ireland, Allslale
Foundation. Northern Ireland Housing Executive the Women's Aid F9deralion, Rape Crisis Northern

we also obtained an understanding ol the legal and regulatory framework that the Charity operates
in. focusing on provisions ol those laws and regulations that had a direct ell8cI on the delerminalion ol

considered in this context included Nl Charity legislation lincluding the regulator. The Charities

in addition. we considered provisions ol other laws and regulations that do not have a direct effect

Wg made enquiries ol management and those charged with governancg and reviewed minutes of

Audit procedures designed lo respond lo the risks ol fraud
we consldered the risk of fraud through transactions outside the normal course of transactions by

based on the results of our risk assessment we designed our audit procedures to Klenlily and lo

allocation ol expenditure to the reslricled funds and the segregation ol duties within those controls.

Impairment of fixod assets
A review lor indicators ol impairment is carried out al each reporting date, wlth the recoverable
amount being estimated where such indicators exist. Where the cariying value exceeds th9
recoverable amount, the asset is irnpaired accordingly. Prior impairments are also reviewed lor
possible reversal a.. each reporting dale.
For the purposes ol impairment testing, when il is not rx)sst)le to estimate the recovarab
amount ol an individual asset, an estimate is made ol the recoverable amount ol the cash-
generating unil lo which the asset bebngs. The cash-generaling unit is the smallest identifiable
group ol assets that includes the asset and generates cash inflows Ihat largely independent ol the
cash intlows from other assets or groups ol assets.
For impairment testing ol goodwill, the goodwill acquired in a business combination is, from the
acquisition dale, allocated to each of the cash-generating units that are expected to benefit Irom
the synergies ol the combination. Irrespective of whether other assets or liabilities ol the charity
are assigned to those units.
Flnanclal Instrumenls
A linanclal asset or a financial liability is recognised only when the charity becomes a party lo the
conlraclual provisions ol the inslrumenl.
Baslc financial instruments are initially recognised al the amount receivable or payable including
any related Iransadion costs.
Current assets and current liabilities are subsequently rneasured al the cash or other
considerallon expected to ￿ paid or received and not discounted.
Debt instruments are subsequently measured al amortised cost.
Where investments in shares are publicly traded or their lair value can otherwise be measured
reliably, the investment is subsequently measured al fair value with changes in lair valug
recognised in income and expenditure. All other such investments are subsequently measured al
cost less impairment.
Other financial instruments, including derivatives, are inttially recognised at lair value, unless
payfflenl lor an asset is deferred beyond normal business terms or financed at a rate ol interest
that is not a market rate. in which case the asset is measured at the present value of the lulure
payments discounted al a market fale of interest lor a sirnilar debt inslrumenl.
Other tinancial instruments are subsequently measured al lair value, with any changes
recognised in the statement ol linancial aclivilles, with the exceptSon ol hedglng instruments in a
designated hedging relationship.
Financial assels that are measured at cost or amortised cost are rewewed lor objective evidence
ol Impairment al the end ol each reporting dale. 11 there is objective evidence of impairment, an
impairment loss is recognised under the appropriate heading in the slalement ol tinancial
activities in which the initial gain was recognised.
