August ot-that yeai. to be cxact. In iraction to inci'easiiig violEnLe, Chui'ch and Coniiniinity leaders liad called for a gTreatei' iDvolveinent for young people in activities desi&ined io keep thetn well away froin that violcnce. This call led to the creation of a plethora of children's organisations. Not surpi'isingly football clllbs were very Inuch in the forefront of the newly created organisations and bodies. Sev¢ral sprung up in the greatci. South Bclfast aiEa alone, as w¢ll, of COUTse, througliout B¢lfast and the surroui)ding areas. These new clubs iiunediately found themselves with a dileinma which threatened the veiy and newly established existence. By tht tiine these clubs wei'e beginning to get organised, with coinmittee Sii'uctures, coaches and the basic equipiiient of balls, cones, bibs and the lilce, saying llotliing about the need tg obtain club k2ts, the established leagues wer6 not only full of thcir complement of e%tablished and newly jaEn6d, but al¥eady existing clubs but had, in all cases, alr¢ady StE￿ed their lea2uo fjxturcs for the coming season. Coi)5equently, the probleni of how to inove fi'om Inerely one or two evening's training to become actually involved in competitive footb211 inatches, both league and Cup, had io be resolved. Well-meaning good intentions weie on¢ thing, but well-meaning good in*ntions were not goii)g to retain the interests of children, both Éeen and pre-teen, who were as iinpatient then foi. the cut at]d thrusi of football coiiipetition as they ¥einain fifty years on. The problein was solved by John Ca88idy, who had been involved hiii)self in the foundation of one of these new clubs. John alon¥ with tTr￿ee oi. four others decidcd that if exisltng leagues wei'e full up and couldn't be used to gain access for tlie new clubs. the answer was Siinple just establish a new le8gue, in September, a month into the traditional football season. There were nD fanfayes, press rel¢ase5, no offices even. It can be tt'iithfully slated that in its e&i'liest days the league op¢i'ated out of John's living i'ooin, Forget coinputsrs? pi'ogi'amines, Inati'ices foi. the fixture5 and all th¢ l'est, it was Jolin <tiid an ai'mchair and a liard backed note book and a pencil.... and, lo, the first South B¢lfast League fixtui'es were in place. Plunkett's, to naine bllt a few, the NIBFA Cup and, I￿ore latterly IhFough involvcincnt in the National League, saw drnnatic inciease in the size of these clubs during ihis tiine. The only woy 10 satisfy the detnand for competitive football for all who waiited to play it was to ciyate second teaiDS. The clEibs in question conlacied the leagiie about the eJiioli￿¢nt of second teains. The double header Inatches kicking off at 9.00am and I I.00am- had made its debut. The luxuiy of getting out of bed foi. a 10.OOaJn kick off was gonel Secondly, by the iniddle of (h¢ first decade of the h¥enty fli'st century the South Belf&st League could rightly be de5¢ribed as flying. The t￿l￿]ng of the whole operation by a sinall band of volunteors w&s extreinely impre55ive. Tn addition, the league now coininitted to paiticipation by select te&ms in prestigioiis coinpetitions abroad, notably Spain. A5 a result, more tea]ns wanted to join, attt'acted by the various levels of ability and the tnultiplc divisions now at eaclL oge gi'oup. Allied to this, a lot of otiiei. leagueg in the Belfast or general Belfa%t area began to wane undei. the stt'ain of the tiine deimands of volutiteeTS involved in running clubs and Icagues. Tlie Down and Connor league, the Castlereagh Icague and the East Antrim leagiie all folded sending applications to the South Belfast league soaring. Siinilarly. giiidcd by that nob16 principle of waRting lo and tying to pi'ovide football for all, the league COEnmittee just got their heads down and got on with running a league of well over 200 teains.
