The charitable purpose of the congregatron is the advan￿ment of religion.
Portslewart congregation of the Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
The Presbyterian Church in Ireland, as a Reformed Church within the wider body ol Christ is grounded in the
ScriplLJres and exists lo love and honour God through faith in His Son and by the power of His Spinl, and lo
enable her members lo play their part in ftjlfilling God's mission lo our wortd.
The congregation's mission purpose is lo proclaim Christ lo all ages, for all ages, with our lips and with our lives.
Our vision is, by the ¥ace of God, lo be an inclusive. welcomlng community of Christ's people of all ages, which..

The congregation meets for worship every Sunday and visitors are welo)me lo join. The Sacrament of the Lords
Supper is observed on twelve o¢ca8ions during the year and all those who have been baplised and who have
made a profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ are acknitted to the Lord's Supper. The congregation hold5

Worship and prayer
The congr8galion nomally meets for worship each Sunday al 10.30am and 6.30pm Ouring the week the Prime
Time Bible Study provides an opportunity for members lo meet together for fellowship. 10 Study the scriptures and
for a lime of prayer.
As well as our regular services during the year we 8cknowledged God's gift of new life with one Sacrarnenl of
Baptism and gave thanks for f21thlul services and sought lo comfort those who had been bereaved during the year.
Al 31 December 2020 there were 191 communicant members and 241 families connected with the congregation.
The average week attendance at mornlng worship is 100 prior to COVID reslriclitsns and 50 later in year due lo
COVID proloco5s.
Pastoral care
Members of the congregation who ale ijnable lo attend church due to sickness or age are visited on a regular basis
by the minister, elders or by one of the congregab"on's pastor81 visitors.
MlssSon and outrgach
Al a local level the congregation seeks lo support and equip all members lo share their Christsan faith. on a daily
basis IhroLJgh their own lives and inleraclion with family, neighbours, work colleagues and during leisure activity.
Soffle membets have been involved in short-letrn mission teams throughout the country and overseas. Retiring
collections and offerings were also taken up for appeals throughout the year.
On a wider basis, our congregation supports the United Appeal fund. United Appeal provides financial support at
home and overseas, as51sling congTegations with the deployment of locally based staff, enables chLJrch planbng
provides grant support for the upkeep of Church premises, assists with the running costs of Union Theological
College Ilhe Church's Irainlng college for mlnislry sludenlsl, and financially supports congregations in the area of
worship, discipleship. global mission, outreach, 1è8dership and pastoral Care. The congregation also contributes lo
the denomination's annual Worfd Development Appeal and any other speei81 appeals.
Presbytery
The congregation wa5 represented at the regular meetings of Presbytery by our minister and one of the elders.
This provides an important link betsveen the congregations and the wider structures of the Church.
General Assembly
Unfortunately due lo Coronaviru5 restriction5, no general asssmbly meeting look place in 2020.
Propeity
Miscellaneous expenditure of £11,057 was incurred to maintain our fabric and buildings.

During the current financial year th& church generated a surplus of £17,65412D19". -£55,747). This is in line with
expectations. As al the year end the balance sheet also showed healthy nel assets of £114.254 12019..

The Klrk Session
The Iruslees of the congregation are the members of ils Kirk Session. Under the congregation s governlng
document. The Code. the book of the conslilulion and govemmenl of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the Kirk
Session seeks lo watch over and promote the spiritual interest of the congregation and DI persons not connected
with any congregation who are within ils bounds. It ensures pastoral care is in place in the congregation and
seeks lo further the ¢ontribution ol the Church lo Christian witness and service irTr the local Gommijnily. Th& Kirk
Sessions has delegated lo its Congregational Committee the temporal affairs ol the congregation including
administering all funds and property belonging lo the congregation. Members of thé Kirk Session are ex-officio
members of the Congregational Committee.
The Kirk Sesslon consi515 of the ordained minister and the ruling elders of the congregations. All members are
enlilled to propose, speak and exercise eoual votes al meetings, except that the Moderator, the ministers in
active duty in the congregation, has no deliberative bul only a casting vote.
Slalad meetings ol the Kirf< session are held on the third Tuesday of each month excluding July and August.
To be chosen for the office ol the eldership in the congregation a pèrson musl be a voting member and a regular
altendanl on ils ordinances. The selection of those proposed lo be called lo the office can be either by the
congregation or by the Kirk Session. Members are elected if they obtain tsvo-thirds of those who VDIe.
Presbytery
Under the Presbyterian Church in Ireland lomi of governance the corporate oversight of a congregation is the
respansibilily of a Presbytery which superintends generally the spiritual and temporal 8ffair5 of the congregation5
assigned lo Il by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Portslewart congregation of the
Presbyterian Church has been assigned lo the Coleraine and Limavady Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in
Ireland, The men7bership ol the Presbytery consists mainly of the active ministers of congregation5 assigned to
il by the General Assembly, minsters who have rètired frorn active duty and an elder appointed by the Kirk
Session of the congregation.
The General Assembly
The General Assembly is the supreme court of the Church, representing in one body the whole Church an
acting as ils supreme legi51alive, ?dminislralion and jLJdicial aulhorily, in dealing with all mallers brought before it.
The General Assembly is normally con51iluled during the first week In June for WDrship and lo conduel its
business. Al the end of business, il is dissolved. The membership of the Genèral Assembly consists mainly ol
the active ministers of each congregab'on. retired minsters and a representative elder appointed by the Kirk
Session of each congregation.

Public beneflt statement
The Presbyterian Church in Ireland meets the public benefit requirement by providing benefit lo ils membets and
the general public by making known the Christian Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ through the advancement of
religion.
The direct benefit8 which flow from tho purposes of thè Church include the gaining of an understanding in
Christian bekefs as sel out in the Bible and in the Church's subordillale standards Ithe Westminster Confession
ol Faith and the Shorter and Larger Calechism51 leading lo spiritual and moral development and opportunities for
response lo Bible leaching. In turn, this framework leads lo practical expressions of Christian beliefs and
standards in the local community such as through the care ol those in need linGluding the sick. disabled and
bereaved).
Generally the above benefits are delivered locally by congregations and their members, or are faeilitaled through
presbyteries or are organised and delivered centrally. Local delivery is facilitated by Central resources in almost
all cases. Public access is made known through the use of noliceboards, printed material, press advertisement,
websites, ancl Social media or in other ways.
The benefits are demonslraled through regular evalu8tion of the services and informal and sd-hoc feedback from
members, their families, and members of the public,
The purpose does not lead lo harm. The only private bgnefil flowing from our purpose is welated lo Ministers,
Missionaries, Deaconesses, Irish Mission workers and Lay Agents who receive benefits as a result of their
holding office or employment. However. this is incidental and necessary in order lo further our charitable
purpose. There are no other Pfivale benefits. The ben8ficiaries ol this purpose a￿ mernbers, their families, other
individuals that the Presbyterian Church in Ireland is in direct and indirect colltact with, the eommunity in which
pastoral seNices are provided and other communities throughout Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and
woddwide which benefit from our engagement with and support for both Christian and other secular
organisations, charities and individual members of the public.

1.1 Accountlng convention
The financial slalemenls have b&en prepared in accordance with the Charities Act 2008 and ' Accounting and
Reporting by Charities.. Slalemenl of Recommended Practice applicable to Charities preparing their accounts
in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in thè UK and Republic of Irelalld IFRS 1021
18ffeclive 1 January 20191" The charity is a Public Bènefit Enlily as defined by FRS 102.
The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities applying FRS 702 Update Bulletin
1 not lo prepare a Statement of Cash Flows
The financial slalemenls have depsrted from the Charities (Accounts and Reportsl Regulalic>ns 2008 only lo
the exlenl required to provide a true and fair view. This departure has involved following the Statement ol
Recomm&nded Practice for Charities applying FRS 102 rather than the version of the Slalemenl of
Recommended Practice which is ref&rred lo in the Regulations bul which has since been withdrawn.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency ol the charity. Monetary
amounts in these financial slalements are rounded lo the nearest £.
The financial statements havs been prepared under the historical ¢osl convention, rnodifiecl lo include the
revaluation Df fr@ehold prope￿e$ and lo include inveslmènl properties and certain financial instruments al fair
value. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.
1.2 Golng con¢orn
Al the time trf approving the financial slatemenls, the Iruslees have a reasonablg expectation that the charity
has adequate resources lo continue in operational existence for the foreseeable fulLJre. Thus the Iruslees
colllinue lo adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial slatemenls.
1.3 Charftable funds
Unreslricled funds are available for use al the discretion of the Iruslees in ILJrtherance of their charitable
objectives.

1.4 Income
Income is recognised when the charity is legally enlilled lo il after 8ny performance conditions have been mel.
the amounts can be measured reliably, and il is probable Ih8t income will be received.

of the donation. unless performance condrtlons require d&ferral of the amount. Income lax recoverable in

classrfied as receivable within one year are not amortised.
Baslc financlalliabilitles
Basic financial liabilities. including creditors and bank loans are initialty recognised at transaction price unless
the arrang8menl conslilules a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured al the present
value of the fuluie payments discounted at a markel rale of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable
within one year are not amortised.
Debt instruments are subsequently carried al amortised cost, uslng the effective interest rale method.
Trade creditors are obligations lo pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course ol
Ope￿I10nS from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one
year or less. If not, they are presented as non-currenl liabilities. Trade creditors are r&¢ognised initially al
transaction price and subsequently rneasured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.
Derecognltlon of financial Ilabilities
Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity's conlraclual obligation5 expire or are discharged or
cancelled.
1.7 Employee beneflts
The cost of any unused holiday entillemenl is recognised in the period in which the employee's services are
received.
Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the charity 15 demonstr2bly committed
lo lemiinale the employment of an employee or lo provide termination benefits.

Payments lo defi'ned contribution retirement benefit schemes are charged as an expense as they fall due.
Critical accountlng estimates and judgements
In the application of the charity's accounting policies, th& Iruslees are required lo make judgements, eslimales
anol assumptions pboul the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily appa￿￿1 from other
sources. The esliTYale5 and associated assumptions are based on historical expeiience and other laclors that
are considered lo be relevant. Actual results may differ from these eslimal&s.
The eslimales and undedying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions lo accounting
estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revislon affects r)nly that
period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future
periods.
