Structure, governance and management
The Kirk Session
The charity trustees of the congregation are the members of its Kirk Session. Under the
congregation's governing document, The Code, the book of the constitution and government of the
Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the Kirk Session seeks to watch over and promote the spiritual interest
of the congregation and of persons not connected with any congregation who are within its bounds. It
ensures pastoral care is in place in the congregation and seeks to further the contribution of the
Church to Christian witness and seNice in the local communty. The Kid( Sessions has delegated to its
Congregational Committee the temporal affairs of the congregation including administering all funds
and propety belonging to the congregation. Members of the Kirk Session are ex-officio members of
the Congregational Committee.
The Kirk Session consists of the ordained minister and the ruling elders of the congregations. All
members are entitled to propose, speak and exercise equal votes at meetings. except that the
Moderator, the ministers in active duty in the congregation, has no deliberative but only a casting vote.
Stated meetings of the Kirf( session are held 4th Tuesday each month.
To be chosen for the ofFice of the eldership in the congregation a person must be a voting member
and a regular attendant on its ordinances. The selection of those proposed to be called to the office
can be either by the congregation or by the Kirk Session. Members are elected if they obtain
two-thirds of those who vote.
Presbytery
Under the Presbyterian Church in Ireland form of governance the corporate oversight of
congregation is the responsibility of a Presbytery which superintends generally the spiritual and
temporal affairs of the congregations assigned to it by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian
Church in Ireland. Trinity Greyabbey congregation of the Presbyterian Church has been assigned to
the Ards Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. The membership of the Presbytery consists
mainly of the active ministers of congregations assigned to it by the General Assembly, minsters who
have retired from active duty and an elder appointed by the Kirk Session of the congregation.
The General Assembly
The General Assembly is the supreme court of the Church, representing in one body the whole
Church and acting as its supreme legislative, administration and judicial authority, in dealing with all
matters brought before it. The General Assembly is normally constituted during the first week in June
for worship and to conduct its business. At the end of business it is dissolved. The membership of the
General Assembly consists mainly of the active ministers of each congregation, retired minsters and a
a representative elder appointed by the Kirk Session of each congregation.

Objectives and activities
The charitable purpose of the congregation is the advancement of religion.
Trinity Greyabbey COng￿gatIon of the Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian
Church in Ireland. The Presbyterian Church in Ireland, as a Reformed Church within the wider body of
Christ is grounded in the Scriptures, and exists to love and honour God through faith in His Son and
by the power of His Spirit, and to enable her members to play their part in fulfilling God's mission to
our world.
The congregations mission purposes is:
A Welcoming, Christ-centred and Spirit-filled Church, Worshipping and Serving God in the Community
is increasingly characterised by love for God, and love and concem for others
is committed to the historic Christian gospel as revealed in the Bible
is relevant to people of this time and place.
The congregation aims to live out its Mission and Vision as a family of God's people by being-
A Covenant Community= where our relationships are rooted in the promises of God by living faiihfully
toward him and toward one another"
An intergenerational Community: where adutts intentionally take the lead to engage with, encourage
and nurture younger members to maturity in Christ-
- An Outward looking Communty: where we want the blessings of God that belong to us in the gospel
to become blessings for others beyond the bounds of our communty"
As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, we believe that the Bible is the supreme
authority over all we do, and that the Westminster Confession of Faith, along with the Larger and
Shorter Catechism set out what we understand the Bible teaches on key matters of Christian faith and
practice.
The congregation meets in places of worship every Sunday and visitors are welcome to join. The
Sacrament of the Lord's Supper is observed on several occasions during the year and all those who
have been baptised and who have made a profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ are admitted to
the Lord's Supper. The congregation holds regular bible study meetings and has a wide range of
organisations l Ministry's including..

Volunteers
The Trustees wish to acknowledge their deep appreciation of those who give freely of their time by
serving on committees and helping with organisations I ministries.
Public Benefit Statement
The Presbyterian Church in Ireland meets the public benefit requirement by providing benefit to tts
members and the general public by making known the Christian Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ
through the advancement of religion.
The direcl benefits which flow from the purposes of the Church include the gaining of an
understanding in Christian beliefs as set out in the Bible and in the Church's subordinate standards
(the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Shorter and Larger Catechisms) leading to spiritual and
moral development and opportunities for response to Bible teaching. In tum, this framework leads to
practical expressions of Christian beliefs and standards in the local community such as through the
care of those in need (including the sick, disabled and bereaved).
Generally the above benefits are delivered locally by congregations and their members, or are
facilitated through presbyteries or are organised and delivered centrally. Local delivery is facilitated by
central resources in almost all cases. Public access is made known through the use of noticeboards,
printed material, press advertisement, websites, and social media or in other ways.
The benefits are demonstrated through regular evaluation of the services and informal and ad-hoc
feedback from members, their families, and members of the public.
The purpose does not lead to harm. The only private benefit flowing from our purpose is related to
Ministers, Missionaries, Deaconesses, Irish Mission workers and Lay Agents who receive benefits as
a result of their holding office or employment. However, this is incidental and necessary in order to
further our charitable purpose. There are no other private benefits. The beneficiaries of this purpose
are members, their families, other individuals that the Presbyterian Church in Ireland is in direct and
indirect contact with, the community in which pastoral services are provided and other communtiies
throughout Northem Ireland. the Republic of Ireland, and worldwide which benefit from our
engagement with and support for both Christian and other secular organisations, charities and
individual members of the public.
The Kirk Session has had regard to the Charity Commissions Public benefit requirement statutory
guidan￿.

KIRK SESSION REPORT
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your
ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths" Pmverbs 3."5-6
When I look back over 2023 it has been a busy and challenging year within the Kirk Session
but as always God has been faithful.
2023 will be remembered for Mission work within both churches. It was great that a team from
Greyabbey was able to travel to Abura to officially open the Early Learning Centre in partnership
through Fields of Life and we look fomard to a team from Cloughey travelling to Eswatini in 2024 to
continue building relationships and supporting people through Challenge Ministries.
Of course, it is important that Mission continues at home through supporting various charities, running
Holiday Bible Clubs, continuing to develop connections with our local schools, football club,
Greyabbey L.O.L. and community asscKiations.
We were delighted to form a Fellowship subcommittee to work at bringing people together through fun
days, walks and ten pin bowling.
A good part of session's time has been allocated to Revilalisation of God's work in the East Coast of
our Peninsula., with a document being fO￿arded to Presbytery for their consideration.
Discussions have been ongoing in 2023 with regard to a Chaplaincy in Glastry High School and it was
good to see the fruits of labour coming together with Mr Stevie Garrett stsrting this position as
chaplain in October.
Towards the end of 2023 it was decided to focus a Sermon series on everyday issues
from Abortion to Addiction being biblically addressed. Discipleship groups followed these
series and on a number of occasions they came together to hear specialised speakers on the
topics.
2023 saw our minister Neil as Moderator of Ards Presbytery and it was a privilege to
welcome the Presbytery to Greyabbey in September for a Communion Service.
Prayer is vital within our congregations with T@P continuing to meet on atternate
Wednesday evenings with special times of focused prayer throughout the year.
"And let us not gmw weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, rf we do not give up"
Galatians 6."9
It is a blessing to see Cloughey congregation continue to grow and we appreciate all the volunteers
within the church family who help with this ministry. With Presbytery's approval and the dedication and
foresight of Cloughey congregation we were able to Commen￿ the elections for Elders from Cloughey
and we look forward to welcoming them onto session in 2024.
Again, we thank and appreciate the unfailing commitment of all leaders and committees who help
within all our Ministries and Organisations in Greyabbey.
It is noted at the end of the year that attendance numbers at Greyabbey church has declined.
This is something that the session will be addressing and giving priority to in 2024.
We would encourage everyone to prioritise worshipping God collectively on a Sunday.

The Kirk session thanks Neil for his energy and passion in delivering God's word and may
God continue to richly bless him in his ministry along with Ruth, Jack and Archie.
Finally, I personally thank my fellow elders for their dedication, grace and unfailing
commitment in witnessing and encouraging people to grow in their faith.

Accounting policies
Basis of preparation
The financial statements have been prepared on the historical cost basis, as modiFied by the
revaluation of certain financial assets and liabilities and investment properties measured at fair
value through income or expenditure.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional cU￿encY of the entity.
Going concern
There are no material uncertainties about the charity's abilty to continue.
Judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty
The preparation of the financial statements requires management to make judgements,

are continually reviewed and are based on experience and other factors, including expectations
of future events that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances.

Accounting policies (continued)
Incoming resources
All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when entitlement has
passed to the charity- it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction
will flow to the charity and the amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies
are applied to particular categories of income=
income from donations or grants is recognised when there is evidence of entttlement to the
gfft, receipt is probable and its amount can be measured reliably.
legacy income is recognised when receipt is probable and entttlement is established.
income from donated goods is measured at the fair value of the goods unless this is
impractical to measure reliably, in which case the value is derived from the cost to the donor
or the estimated resale value. Donated facilities and services are recognised in the
accounts when received rf the value can be reliably measured. No amounts are included for
the contribution of general volunteers.
income from contracts for the supply of services is recognised with the delivery of the
contracted service. This is classified as unrestricted funds unless there is a contractual
requirement for it to be spent on a particular purpose and returned if unspent, in which case
it may be regarded as restricted.
Resources expended
Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis as a liability is incurred. Expenditure includes any
VAT which cannot be fully recovered, and is classified under headings of the statement of
financial activities to which it relates=
expenditure on raising funds includes the costs of all fundraising activtties, events,
non-charitable trading adivities, and the sale of donated goods.
expenditure on charitable activities includes all costs incurred by a charity in undertaking
activities that further its charitable aims for the benefit of its beneficiaries, including those
support costs and costs relating to the governance of the charity apportioned to charitable
activities.
other expenditure includes all expenditure that is neither related to raising funds for the
charity nor part of its expenditure on charitsble activities.
All costs are allocated to expenditure categories reflecting the use of the resource. Direct costs
attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs are apportioned
between the activities they contribute to on a reasonable, justifiable and consistent basis.
Tangible assets
Tangible assets are initially recorded at cost, and subsequently stated at cost less any
accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Any tangible assets carried at revalued
amounts are recorded at the fair value at the date of revaluation less any subsequent
accumulated depreciation and subsequent accumulated impairment losses.

Page 13
Trinity Greyabbey Congregation of The Presbyterian Church in

Notes to the Financial Statements (continued)
Year ended 31 December 2023
Accounting policies (¢ontinued)
Tangible assets {continued)
An increase in the carrying amount of an asset as a result of a revaluation, is recognised in other
recognised gains and losses, unless it reverses a charge for impainnent that has previously been
recognised as expenditure within the statement of financial activities. A decrease in the carrying
amount of an asset as a result of revaluation, is recognised in other recognised gains and losses,
except to which it offsets any previous revaluation gain, in which case the loss is shown within
other recognised gains and losses on the statement of financial activities.
Depreciation
Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost or valuation of an asset, less its residual
value, over the useful economic life of that asset as follows=
Freehold propety
20/0 Straight line
Impairment of fixed assets
A review for indicators of impairment is carried out at each reporting date, with the recoverable
amount being estimated where such indicators exist. Where the carrying value exceeds the
recoverable amount, the asset is impaired accordingly. Prior impairments are also reviewed for
possible reversal at each reporting date.
For the purposes of impairment testing, when it is not possible to estimate the recoverable
amount of an individual asset, an estimate is made of the recoverable amount of the
cash-generating untt to which the asset belongs. The cash-generating unit is the smallest
identifiable group of assets that includes the asset and generates cash inflows that largely
independent of the cash inflows from other assets or groups of assets.
For impairment testing of goodwill, the goodwill acquired in a business combination is, from the
acquisition date, allocated to each of the cash-generating units that are expected to benefit from
the synergies of the combination, irrespective of whether other assets or liabilities of the charity
are assigned to those units.
Financial instruments
A financial asset or a financial liability is recognised only when the charity becomes a party to the
contractual provisions of the instrument.
Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at the amount receivable or payable including
any related transaction costs.
Current assets and current liabilities are subsequently measured at the cash or other
consideration expected to be paid or received and not discounted.
Debt instruments are subsequently measured at amortised cost.
Where investments in shares are publicly traded or their fair value can otherwise be measured
reliably, the investment is subsequently measured at fair value with changes in fair value
recognised in income and expenditure. All other such investments are subsequently measured at
cost less impairment.

A¢¢ounting policies (¢ontinued)
Financial instruments {¢ontinu
Other financial instruments, including derivatives, are initially recognised at fair value, unless
payment for an asset is deferred beyond normal business temis or fInan￿d at a rate of interest
that is not a market rate, in which case the asset is measured at the present value of the future
payments discounted at a market rate of interest for a similar debt instrument.
Other financial instruments are subsequently measured at fair value, with any changes
recognised in the statement of financial activities. with the exception of hedging instruments in
designated hedging relationship.
Financial assets that are measured at cost or amortised cost are reviewed for objective eviden
of impairment al the end of each reporting date. If there is objective eviden￿ of impairment, an
impaimient loss is recognised under the appropriate heading in the statement of financial
activities in which the initial gain was recognised.
For all equty instruments regardless of significance, and other financial assets that are
individually significant, these are assessed individually for impairment. Other financial assets are
etther assessed individually or grouped on the basis of similar ¢￿d[t risk characteristics.
Any reversals of impaimient are recognised immediately, to the extent that the reversal does not
result in a carying amount of the financial asset that exceeds what the carrying amount would
have been had the impairment not previously been recognised.
