STRUCTURE AND MANAGEMENT

The Kirk Session

The charity trustees of the congrega@on are the members of its Kirk Session. Under the congrega@on’s governing document, The Code, the book of the cons@tu@on and government of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the Kirk Session seeks to watch over and promote the spiritual interest of the congrega@on and of persons not connected with any congrega@on who are within its bounds. It ensures pastoral care is in place in the congrega@on and seeks to further the contribu@on of the Church to Chris@an witness and service in the local community. The Kirk Sessions has delegated to its Congrega@onal Commi[ee the temporal affairs of the congrega@on including administering all funds and property belonging to the congrega@on. Members of the Kirk Session are ex-officio members of the Congrega@onal Commi[ee.

The Kirk Session consists of the ordained minister and the ruling elders of the congrega@ons. All members are en@tled to propose, speak and exercise equal votes at mee@ngs, except that the Moderator, the ministers in ac@ve duty in the congrega@on, has no delibera@ve but only a cas@ng vote.

Stated mee@ngs of the Kirk session are held at least twice in each year.

Kingsmills congrega@on of the Presbyterian Church has been assigned to the Newry Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. The membership of the Presbytery consists mainly of the ac@ve ministers of congrega@ons assigned to it by the General Assembly, minsters who have re@red from ac@ve duty and an elder appointed by the Kirk Session of the congrega@on.

The General Assembly

The General Assembly is the supreme court of the Church, represen@ng in one body the whole Church and ac@ng as its supreme legisla@ve, administra@on and judicial authority, in dealing with all ma[ers brought before it. The General Assembly is normally cons@tuted during the first week in June for worship and to conduct its business. At the end of business it is dissolved. The membership of the General Assembly consists mainly of the ac@ve ministers of each congrega@on, re@red minsters and a representa@ve elder appointed by the Kirk Session of each congrega@on.

The Presbyterian Church in Ireland, as a Reformed Church within the wider body of Christ is grounded in the Scriptures, and exists to love and honour God through faith in His Son and by the power of His Spirit, and to enable her members to play their part in fulfilling God’s mission to our world.

ACTIVITIES AND OBJECTIVES

The congrega@on meets for worship every Sunday and visitors are welcome to join. The Sacrament of the Lords Supper is observed on several occasions during the year and all those who have been bap@sed and who have made a profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ are admi[ed to the Lord’s Supper. A Sunday School of 40 children meets before the morning service and during the service there is a creche space provided. The congrega@on holds regular Bible study and prayer mee@ngs as well as a wide range of organisa@ons including:

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

Worship and prayer

The congrega@on normally meets for worship each Sunday at 10.30am and hold occasional evening services at 7pm. During the week the Bible Study provides an opportunity for members to meet together for fellowship, to study the scriptures and for a @me of prayer.

As well as our regular services during the year we acknowledged God’s gij of new life at one Sacrament of Bap@sm. We gave thanks for faithful lives and sought to comfort those who had been bereaved with funeral services during the year.

At 31 December 2022 there were 140 communicant members and 92 families connected with the congrega@ons. The average weekly a[endance at morning worship is 90.

Pastoral care

Members of the congrega@on who are unable to a[end church due to sickness or age are visited on a regular basis by the minister, elders and informally by other members of the congrega@on.

Mission and outreach

At a local level the congrega@on holds a Holiday Bible Club each year as a culmina@on and extension of outreach through Good News Club.

Through the course of the year the congrega@on has opportunity to support various mission partners through prayer and financial giving. This work is primarily carried out through the

midweek gathering. Our mission partners include (but are not limited to) CEF, SCFS, BCM, EMF, etc.

Many members of the congrega@on help to lead summer camps through Child Evangelism Fellowship in Kilkeel.

The congrega@on supports the United Appeal for Mission which is a central fund of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. This fund enables congrega@ons to support the wider mission of the denomina@on and to do mission and outreach on a denomina@onal basis beyond what the congrega@on could do on its own. The United Appeal Fund provides financial support for mission personnel at home and overseas, assists congrega@ons with the deployment of locally based staff, enables church plan@ng, provides grant support for the upkeep of church premises, assist with the running costs of Union Theological College, the Church’s training college for ministry students, and financially supports congrega@on in the areas of worship, discipleship, global mission, outreach, leadership and pastoral care.

The congrega@on also contributes to the denomina@ons annual World Development Appeal, Sunday School project and any other special appeals.

Presbytery

The congrega@on was represented at the regular mee@ngs of Presbytery by our minister and / or one of the elders. This provides an important link between the congrega@ons and the wider structures of the church.

General Assembly

The minister and one of our elders were nominated to a[end the mee@ng of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland held in Assembly Buildings, Belfast, in June.

Property

There were no major repairs or refurbishment projects during the year.

OrganisaXons

There is a weekly prayer and Bible teaching mee@ng ( Midweek ). This mee@ng runs jointly with First Drumbanagher and Jerre[spass congrega@on from October to Easter. During the summer months there is a fortnightly mee@ng for prayer. This provides the 25-30 people in a[endance with the opportunity to hear Bible teaching and pray together. Mission speakers visit approximately once a month.

Men’s Fellowship meets monthly and is run jointly with First Drumbanagher and Jerre[spass congrega@on. Speakers are invited from other Presbyterian Churches as well as various mission organisa@ons. Following the mee@ng, the approx. 15 men enjoy fellowship over supper together. Although this has been suspended due to COVID-19.

Presbyterian Women is organised at a denomina@onal level, but our par@cular group meets jointly with women from First Drumbanagher and Jerre[spass congrega@on. A variety of

speakers come to the monthly mee@ngs to share about their mission work and/or from the Bible. Women frequently eat together and occasionally go on trips. There are regular opportuni@es to visit other PW groups across Ireland. Although this has been suspended due to COVID-19.

The Friendship Group is run jointly with First Drumbanagher and Jerre[spass congrega@on and meets once each month between October and Easter. There is a service of worship with singing, prayers and a speaker. The approximately 15 members share a meal together. Although this has been suspended due to COVID-19.

Good News Club meets weekly for children of Primary school age. The 15-20 children play games and quizzes, learn memory verses do crajs, sing songs and hear Bible stories. There are occasional trips.

Junior Youth Challenge meets every other week. Approximately 15 young people of Secondary school age enjoy coming along for games, socialising with friends, hearing a Bible talk and praying together. There are occasional trips.

The Holiday Bible Club takes place in June for one week. There are approx. 60 children from the Church and local area gathered in the Church hall for songs, quizzes, memory verses, crajs, games and Bible stories. This did not take place due to CVOID-19.

The Trustees wish to acknowledge their deep apprecia@on of those who give freely of their @me by serving on commi[ees and helping with organisa@ons and other church ac@vi@es.

The congrega@on’s main source of income is members’ contribu@ons through the Weekly Freewill Offering. There were 74 contributors during the year [77 in previous year, 2021] dona@ng a total of £49,354.09 (£46,790 in previous year, 2021)

BASIS OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

As the total income of the congrega@on is less than £250,000 the congrega@on have elected in accordance with the provisions in The Chari@es (Accounts and Reports Regula@ons (Northern Ireland) 2015 to prepare its accounts on a receipts and payments basis.

FUND ACCOUNTING

Endowment funds are funds, the capital of which must be retained either permanently or at the congrega@on’s discre@on; the income derived from the endowment is to be used either as restricted or unrestricted income funds depending upon the purpose for which the endowment was established in the first place.

Restricted funds comprise (a) income from endowments which is to be expended only on the restricted purposes intended by the donor and (b) revenue dona@ons or grants for a specific congrega@onal ac@vity intended by the donor. Where these funds have unspent balances, interest on their pooled investment is appor@oned to the individual funds on an average balance basis.

Unrestricted funds are income funds which are to be spent on the congrega@on’s general purposes. Designated funds are general funds set aside by the congrega@on for use in the future.
