STrUCTURE AND MANAGEMENr
The Klrk Sesslon
The tharity trustees of the congregatlon are the members of Its Ktrk Sesslon. Under the
conbyegatjon's governlng document, The Code, the book of the constitution and
government of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the Kirk Session seeks to watth over
and promote the spiritual Interest of the congreBatlon and of persons not connected with
any con8regation who are withln its bounds. It ensures pastoral care15 In pla￿ in the
congregation and seeks to further the contrfbutlon of the Churth to Chrlstlan wltness and
service in the local community. The Kirk Session has delegated to its Con£reEational
Cornmittee the temporal affairs of the congregatlon induding administerin8 all funds and
property belonging to the congregation. Members of the firk Session are ex￿￿￿0
members of the Congregational Committee.
The ￿rk Session conslsts of the ordained mlnlster and the rullng elders of the
congregations. All members are entitled to propose, speak and exerclse equal votes at
meetings. except that the Moderator. the minister in artive duty in the congregation, has
no dellberatlve but only a castlng vote.

To be chosen for the offio of the elder5hip in the con8re8ation a person must be a votin8
member and a regular attendant on Its ordlnances. The selectlon of those proposed to be
called to the office can be elther by the congregation or by the Kirk Session. Members are
eletted if they obtain two-thirds of those who vote.
Presbfftry
Under the Presbyterfan Church in Ireland form of governance the corporate oversight of a
congregation is the responsiblllty of a Presbytery which superintends generally the
5plrftual temporal affalrs of the congregations a551gned to It by the General Assembly
of the Presbyterlan Church In IrelarHI. Mlddletown CongreBatlon of the Presbyterlan
Church has been asslgned to the Mona8han Presbytery of the Presbyterian Churth In
Ireland. The membership of the Presbytery consists mainly of the active ministers of
con8re8ations assigned to it by the General Assembly. ministers who have retired from
actlve duty and an elder appointed by the Klrk Sesslon of the congregation.
The General Assembly
The General Assembly Is the supreme court of the Churth, representEng in one body the
whole Church and acting as its supreme legislative, administration and judiual authorlty,
in dealing with all matter5 brought before IL The General Assembly is normallv
constituted during the first week in June for worship and to conduct its business. At the
end of business it is dissolved. The membershtp of the General Assembly consists mainly
of the active mlnSsters of each congregation, retired mlnisters and a representative elder
appointed by the firk Session of each congregation.

DESCRIrnN AND PURPOSE
The charltsble purpose of the congregation is the advancement of religion.
Mlddletown Congregation is a congre8ation of the Presbyterlan Church In Ireland. The
Presbyterlan Church In Ireland, as a Reformed Church within the wider body of ChrisL is
grounded in the Scriptures, and exists to love and honour God through Paith in His Son and
by the power of His Spirit. and to enable her members to play their part in fulfillingGod's
mlsslon to our world.

supreme authority over all we do. and that the Westminster Confession of Faith, along
with the Larger and Shorter Catethlsms, set out what we understand the Bible teathes on
key matters of Christian faith and practice
ACTivmES AND OBJEcllvES
The congregation meets for worshlp every Sunday and visitors are welcome to join. The
Sauament of the Lord'5 Supper Is Obse￿¢d on two occasions during the year and all those
who have been baptlsed and who have made a professlon of falth In the Lord Jesus Chr15t
are admltted to the Lord's Supper. The congregatlon hold5 regular Bible Study and Prayer
meetin8S.

The Congregation meets for every Sunday and visitors are wekome tojoln.

and to study the scripture5
As well as our regular ser¥kes duringthe prwe acknowledae Go￿$ gift of new Ilfe at
Sacrdrnents of Baptism. There were O adultand l infant ￿PtIsMS.
Fun￿￿ seThices were condurted throughout the year givlng thanks for the INes of our members
who have passed on and giving c(Ynfort to those who have been bereaved. Marriages have also
tsken place in the churth durf￿a 2018.
At 31 December 2017 there were 56 communiont fflembers and 25 famllles mnnected with the
¢onBregatlon. The average week attendance at Morn1ry￿rshiP 15 35.
Pasioral rwe
Members of the C￿regatIOn vkn are wwble to attend thurch due to sickness orage are visited
on a regular basis bythe minister and assistant minister. I￿r iwenty eldws visited approximotely
ei8hteÉn homes each in their pastoial dlstrict and the Pastoral Care Team each visita small
number of people wlK• have agreed to have re8ularvisits fmm the team.
Ata local level the ConEregation seek5 to w*a8e in outsch within our communltyvAth the
Summer Out Reach Programme Fit For Life.
IY¥er sixteen of our young people helped rnn summer misslons and Camps locally and overseas.
The ￿gregatIOn supports the United Appeal for Mlssions whlch Is a centrol fund of the
Presbytwian Chvrch. The United Appeal Fund provides financial 5UPPOrt for mission personnel at
home and oversea5. a55ists cowegatSons vAth the dep1￿mentOf l(xally based staff, enables
churth plantin& provides grant support for the upkeep of thurch premises. asslsts Mth the
running costs of Unlon Thedceical College, the Churth'5 trdlning college for ministy students and
financially 5UPPOrts congregations in areas of *•Jrship, disdpleship, global misslon. outreach,
leadership and pastoral care.
The Congregation also contribute5 to the denomination's amual World Oevthpment Appeal,
Sunday Sthool ProiecL Children's Sodetyand other special appeals made bythe Presbyterian
Church.
The congregation is represented at the regular meetings of Presbytery by our minister and
nominated elder. This provides an irnp(Ytant ￿Trk between the Cwegallon and the wlder
structures of the church.
Generdl Assembly
The minister and a nominated elder attended the meeting of the General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Churth in Ireland held in Assembly Buildings BelfasL in June.

The benefits are demonstrated through regular evaluation of the se￿￿e$ and infomial and ad-hoc
feedback from mernbeTS. their families, and members of the public.
The purpose doe5 not lead to hann. The only private benefrt flowin8 from our purpose ts related
to Ministers, Misstonaries, Deawnesses, Irish Mission worker5 and LayAgents receive
beneffts as a result of their holdlng office or employment. However. thi5 15 intidentsl and

The benefi¢larles of this purpose are members, theirfamilies, other individuals that the
Presbyterfan Church In Ireland is in direct and indirect contsct with, the community In whlch
pastoral services are provlded and other cornrnunities throughout Northem Ireland, the Republic
of Ireland, and worfdwlde which benefit from our engagement with and supportfor both Christian
and other secular organisations, charitles and individual members olthe publlc.
The Kirk Session has had regard to the Charlty Comm1$5ions Public benefit requlrement statutory
guidance.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
The congregation's main source of income is member's contributions through the Weekly
Freewill
Offering. There were 50 contributors during the year {50 in 20171 donating a total of
£13942, compared to £12040.00.
Total income of the congregation during the year was £23195. compared to £26601 in the
previous year.
Total expenditure of the congregation increased from £22580 to £23281.
srATEMENT OF TRUSfEE RESPONSIBIUTIES
The Trustees are responsible for preparing the annual report and the financial statements
of the congregation in accordance with applicable law and generally accepted accountin8
prartice.
As the congregation's total income does not exceed £250,OLJ). the Trustees have eletted
under Section 64131 of the Charities Att (Northern Ire13nd} 2008, to prepare a recelpts and
payments account and a statement of assets and liabilities.
The Trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient
to show and explain the congregation's transattions and disclose with reasonable
accuracy at any time its financial position. They are also responsible for safeguarding the
assets of the congregation and hence for takin8 reasonable steps for the prevention and
detection of fraud and other irre8ularitie5.
