STRUCTURE AND MANAGEMEI
The Kirk Session
The charity trustees of the congre8ation are the members of its Kirk Session. Under the
congregation's governing document, The Code, the book of the constitution and
government of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. the Kirk Session seeks to watch over
and promote the spiritual interest of the congregation and of persons not connected with
any congregation who are within its bounds. It ensures pastoral cafe is in place in the
congregation and seeks to further the contribution of the Church to Christian witness and
sepiice in the local community. The Kirk Session has delegated to its Congregational
Commtttee the temporal affairs of the congregation includin8 administering all funds and
property belonging to the congregation. Members of the Kirk Session are ex-officio
members of the Congregational Committee.
The Kirk Session consists of the ordained minister and the ruling elders of the
congregations. All members are entitled to propose, speak and exercise equal votes at
meetings. except that the Moderator, the minister in active duty in the congregation, has
no deliberative but only a casting vote.
The Kirk Session met 3 times in 2017 and a150 before 2 Communion Services.
To be thosen for the office of the eldership in the congreWI'on a person must be a voting
member and a regular attendant on its ordinances. The selection of those proposed to be
called to the office can be either by the congregation or by the Kirk Session. Members are
elected if they obtain two-thirds of those who vote.
Under the Presbyterian Church in Ireland fom of govemance the corporate oversight of a
con8re8ation is the responsibility of a Presbytery which superintend5 generally the
spiritual and temporal affairs of the Cong￿gationS assigned to it by the General Assembly
of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Middletown Congregation of the PreS￿e{lan
Church has been assigned to the Monaghan Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in
Ireland. The membership of the Presbytery conslsts mainty of the act7ve ministers of
con8re8ations assigned to it by the General Assembly, ministers who have retired from
actiNE duty and an eldei appointed by the Kirk Session of the congregation.
The General Assembty
The General Assembly is the supreme court of the Church. ￿presenting in one body the
whole Church and acting as its supreme legislative. administration and judicial authority. in
dealin8 With all matters brought beft)re it. The General Assembly is nonnally constituted
during the first week in June for worship and to conduct its business. At fhe end of
business it is dissolved. The membership of the General Assembly consists mainly of the

active ministers of each con8re8atron. retired ministers and a representatlve elder
appointed by the Kirk Session of each congregatlon.

DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE
The charitable purpose of the congregation is the advancement of religion.
Middletown Congregation is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. The
Presbyteripn Church in Ireland. as a Reformed Church within the wider body of Christ, is
grounded in the Scriptures. and exists to love and honour God through faith in His Son and
by the power of His Spirit, and to enable her members to play their part in fulfillin8 God's
mission to our world.
The Congregation's mission statement reads: Yo know God better.. to make God better
known-
Our Vision is to be an inclusive. welcoming and all-a8e community of Christ's people
which=
- is increasingly characterised by love for God. and love and concern for others;
is committed to the historic Christian gospel as revealed in the Bible:
is relevant to people of this time and place.
The Congregation aims to live out its Mission and Vision as a family of God's people bv
being:
- A Covenant Community: where our relationships are rooted in the promises of God by
living faithfully toward him and toward one another
- An Intergenerational Community: where adults intentionalty take the lead to engage
with, encourage and nurture younger members to maturity in Christ.
- An Outward looking Community. where we want the blessings of God that belong to us
in the gospel to become blessings for others beyond the bounds of our communvty.
- As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, we believe that the Bible is the
supreme authority over all we do. and that the Westminster Confession of Faith, along
with the Larger and Shorter Catechtsrns, set out what we understsnd the Bible teaches on
key matters of Christian faith and prattice
The congregation meets for worship every Sunday and visitors a￿ welcome to join. The
Sacrament of the Lord's Supper is observed on two occasions during the year and all those
who have been baptised and who have made 3 profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
are admitted to the Lord's Supper. The congregation holds regular Bible Study and Prayer
meetings.
We have a wde range of activits'es and organisations including:
- Sunday School.
- Midweek Prayer & Bible Study
- Presbyterian Women- a missionary organisation for women of all ages
- Church Choir
- Bowling Club
- Summer Out Reach Programme Fit For Life

ACHIEVEMENTS ANO PERFORMANCE
Worship and prayer
The Con8regation meets for worship every Sunday and visitors are welcome to join.
The fortnightly Bible Study provides an opportunity for members to meet tO8ether for
fellowship and to study the scriptures
As well as our regular Services durtng the year we acknowledge God's gift of new life at
Sacraments of Bapti'sm. There were O adult and I child baptism.
Funeral sen4ices were conducted throughout the year gr￿ng thanks for the lives of our
members who have passed on and giving comfort to those who have been bere3ved.
Marriages have also taken place in the church durin8 2017.
At 31 December 2017 there were 56 communicant members and 25 families connerted with the
congregation. The average week attendance at moming w0￿h1p 1$ 40.
Pastoral care
Member5 of the COngre￿tiOn who are unable to attend chufch due to sickness or age are visited
on a regular basis by the minister.
Mission and OutJeach
At a local level the Congregation See￿ to engage in outreath within our community with the
Summer Out Reath Programme FFt For Life.
The Congregafjon supports the United Appeal for Missions which is a ￿ntral fund of the
Presbyterian Church. The United Appeal Fund provides financial support for mission personnel at
home and overseas. assists congregations with the deployment of lotally based stsff. enables
church plafitin& provides grant 5UPPOrt for the upkeep of church premises. assists with the
running costs of Union Theological College, the Churth's training cdlege for ministry students and
finantial￿ supports congregations in area5 of worship. discipleship. global mission, outreach,
leadership and pastoral care.
The Congregation also contributes to the denomination's annual Worfd Development Appeal,
SLtnday School Project. Children's Society and other special appeals made by the Presbyterian
Church.
The congregatfon is represented at the regular meetings of Presbytery by our minister and
nominated elder. This provides an important link between the Congregation and the wider
structures of the churth.
General Assembty
The minister and a nominated elder attended the meeting of the General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Church in Ireland held in Assembly Buildings, Belfast, in June.

The Trustees wish to acknowledge their deep appreciation of those who give freely of
their time by serving on committees and leading and helping with organisations and other
thurch activities.

The Presbyterièn Church in Ireland meets the public benefft requirement by providing benefft to Its
members and the general public by making kn¢)wn the Christian Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ
through the advancement of religion.
The direct benefits which flow from the purposes of the Church Include the 8ainlng of an
understanding in Christian beliets as set out in the Bible and in the Church's SuF￿diDate stsndards
(the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Shorter and Larger Catechism51 leading to spiritual
and moral development and opportunities for response to Bible teaching. In turn, this framework
leads to practical expression5 of Christian beliets arid standards in the local tommunity such as
through the care of those in need lincluding the SICK disabled and bereaved).
Generally the above benefits are delivered local￿ by congregations and their members. or are
facilitated through presbyteries or are organised and delivered centrally. Local delivery is facilitated
by central resources in almost all cases. Publlc access is made known through the use of
noticeboards. printed material, press advertisement, websFte5, and social media or in other ways.
The benefits are demonstrated through regular evaluation of the services and informal and ad-hoc
feedback from members. their families, and members of the public.
The purpose does rKrt lead to harrn. The only priwate benefft flowing from our purpose is related to
Ministers. Missionaries. Deaconews. Irish Mission workers and Lay Agents who receive benefits
as a result of their holding office or employment. However, this is incidentsl and Trece5sary in order
to further our charitsble purpose. There are no other private benefits.
The beneficiaries of this purpose are members. their families. other indivlduais that the
Presbyterian Church in Ireland is In direct and indirect contact with, the (ommunity in whith
pastoral Services a￿ provkded and other communitres throughoLrt Northern Ireland. the Republic
of Ireland. and worldwide whith benefft from our engagement with and support for both Christian
and other secular organi5ation5, tharities and individu31 members of the public.

FINANaAL REVIEW
The congregation's main source of incorne is member's contributions through the Weekly
Freewill
Offering. There were 50 contrlbutors during the year (2017) donating a totsl of £12040.17)
Totsl income of the congregation during the year was £19572.22 compared to £21116.72
in the prevtous year.
Total expenditure of the congregation increased from £18293.50 to £13533.69
STATEMENf OF TRUSTEE RESPONSIBiunES
The Tnjstees are responsible for preparing the annual report and the financial statements
of the congregation in accordance with applicable law and generally accepted accountin8
practice.
As the congregats'on's total incorne does not exceed £250.IXKI, the Trustees have elected
under Section 64{3) of the Charities Act {Northern Ireland) 2008. to prepare a receipts and
payments account and a ststement of assets and liabilities.
The Trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient
to show and explain the congregation's transactions and disclose with reasonable accuracy
at any time its financial positron. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of
the congregation and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection
of fraud and other irregularities.
