Feb 2019

The public benefits of the Club activities are opportunities for members of the
public to participate in the sport and recreation of Canoeing, particularly
competitive canoeing. and the involvement of young people in the sport. The
benefits of this participation include improved skills, strength and conditioning,
fitness, personal achievement and development and volunteering opportunities.
These benefits can be derp, onstrated by achievement of recognised awards of
British Canoeing, by participation ir, canoeing events in the United Kingdom and
abroad, by improvements in fitness and skills of individuals demonstrated by
perfomance of indiv.:duals including medal winning performances in
competitions and progression through divisional systems towards elite level.
These are rpcorded in our annual report, as well as in publicly available
competition results, etc.
The purposes of our charity may lead to the following harm:
As with any sport there ia a small risk of injury This is minimised by use of
experienced and ¢jualified coaches and aDpropriate risk assessment and
mitigation. Tkie residual risk is Ou￿elghed by the benefits of participation in sport
through improved skills and fitness levels and the proven health benefits of
regular exercise
The charitv's beneficiaries are those members of the public who choose to make
use of the opportuniiies we offer to come canoeing with us, and those who join
as members for longer term opportunities
The only private benefit flowing from the purpose is to those who supply the
equipment we have to buy and any facilities we have to pay to use, and this is
incidental and necessary because without equipment and facilities we could not
offer our activities.

activities undertaken for the
public benefit in relation to
these objects (include within
this section the ststutory
declaration that trustees have

séctio.n O
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity
during the year
Regular twice weekly Club sessions at Lough Henney over the summer
season were well attended with up to 25 paddlers on the water, and a
separate group training regularly at Stranmillis. We also ran sessions on
Lough Henney most weekends in winter, together with swimming pool
sessions in Newtownards and paddling machine sessions on winter
evenings.
We added 18 'new' members (some had paddled with BCC in the past)
and by the end of 2022 our membership had reached what is probably an
all time high of 49 members. A high proportion of our recruitment has
been female, and memoersryip is now 24 males and 25 females with all
ages from 9-70+ Juniors numbers are lower than we would like with 5
boys and 4 girls.
The priority for 2022 was training to improve safety and the number of
qualified volunteers. 11 members completed Foundation safety and
Rescue Training courses and 4 members qualified as instructors, so we
now have 15 members with some formal certification.
Meteor Waterski Club have given us partial use of their container store
allowing all the equipment needed for club paddling to be stored on site.
Our 2021 investments in the canoe rack and movable jetty were fully
utilised. We have renewed our agreement with the ski club for 2023.
Most of our activitiea have been at Lough Henney, but we did have one
successful club trip to the Blackwater and paddlers also took part in
several CANI Recreational paddles.we provided safety cover for 2
Cancer Focus swims and the Mourne Triathlon.
We wish to thank CANI for the loan of competitive sprint racing boats for
our junior Spi inters, and development racing boats and paddles for use
by the Club in introducing people to the sport.
A total of 20 club members paddled competitively in 2022. Gino Baban
won the 200m k1 Irish Sprint Championships and was 2nd in the
500m.BCC was the only CANI club to organise a competitive racing
event, and BCC members entered races at Belturbet, Malahide, Salmon
Leap, Blessington and Lower Liffey races. Over the summer we
welcomed guest racing paadlers from England and South Africa
Afton Fitzhenry contifjues to train full-time with the British Team.. her 2022
team GB results included 6,: in C1 500m at Poznan Word Cup event, 4"
in C2 500m semi-final at World Championships in Canada, and 6th in c2
500m final at the European Championships in Germany
Lucian Baban represented Ireland in the Junior Sprint squad in Italy, and
also reached K1 finals in the Romanian championships. Lucian's
performan￿ has been recognised by a Mary Peters Award.
