The trustees present their annual report and statements of receipts and payments and assets and liabilities for Edenderry Parish Church for the year ended 31 December 2023.
## Objectives and Activities
The charitable purpose of the Church of Ireland is the advancement of religion through holding regular worship and communicating with and caring for parishioners and others in the community.
The principal function of Edenderry Parish Church is to support the advancement of the Christian religion by promoting, through the work of the parish, the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The spiritual life of the Church is defined by the Holy Bible and a classical Anglican ethos as set out in the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion. The Bible is central to the work at all levels in the parish. Being open to and engaging with society as a whole and offering support for those needing help are fundamental to the practical delivery of the benefits of Christianity.
As a result of activity in the pursuit of the advancement of the Christian religion, Edenderry Parish Church has custody of property and of records, materials and artefacts of significance to the cultural and religious heritage, maintenance of which is undertaken by the Select Vestry of the parish.
## The Activities of the Charity
At the heart of Edenderry Parish Church is a passionate desire to glorify God and to demonstrate His love. Our varied services such as Morning Prayer, Holy Communion, Lenten and Harvest services provide opportunities for everyone to engage in worship and prayer. In addition, a number of organisations such as Mothers’ Union provide opportunities to engage with each other and to be built up in a practical Christian way. The parish bowling, badminton and youth clubs provide a social setting for people of all ages and interests.
## Pastoral Care
We recognise that there are issues in our parish which stem from sickness, bereavement, the elderly, the housebound, as well as those receiving medical treatment, care in hospital and local nursing homes, and we are committed to helping these people in need with empathy, love and compassion. We also actively seek to reach out into our community through a range of caring and educating programmes for young people.
## Missions and Evangelism
Helping those in need is a demonstration of our faith. Edenderry Parish Church reaches out into the local community with support for the Tyrone Protestant Orphan Society. Mission also

extends beyond Ireland, and donations from Edenderry Parish help to support different missionary societies such as Bishops’ Appeal and the Church Missionary Society (CMS Ireland).
## The Achievements of the Charity
Central to the work at all levels in the parish is the teaching of God’s Word to bring parishioners into a deeper knowledge and understanding of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, so that they are thoroughly equipped and discipled to reach out into the community beyond the parish. We strive to inspire all parishioners to transform the local community and to build a Christ-centred congregation which will be a witness for Jesus Christ and to work for the advancement of His Kingdom.

Church services continued to take place weekly on Sunday mornings throughout the year, following the Church of Ireland Liturgy. Attendance has remained at a similar level to the previous year.

In addition, Sunday School continued weekly throughout the school term for the young members of the parish, and provided teaching in line with the Diocesan Cycle of Lessons. A number of varying events and initiatives were held over the course of the term. Confirmation was held in June 2023 with three candidates participating from Edenderry. The parish youth club continued weekly on a Saturday evening. The parish bowling and badminton clubs were also held weekly, with both reporting an increase in membership for the season, and the latter having a success in the local badminton leagues. The Mothers Union again played an important role within the parish and wider community, hosting a number of events and social gatherings.
Also important is the building of community cohesion which will promote a bridging between diverse groups as well as improved educational outcomes through the church’s ministry of teaching.
A number of activities and events were held throughout the year including providing catering services at the Annual Omagh Show, a Parish Auction and a Christmas dinner held in the parish hall for parishioners. It is acknowledged that these events play an important role and opportunity for fellowship.

## Financial Review
Parish income and expenditure remained at similar levels to previous years with no major exceptional items of expenditure recorded during the financial year. Total reserves, excluding heritage assets, of £88,024 (2022 £86,691) in the form of bank balances and investments remain satisfactory.
## Recruitment and Appointment of Select Vestry
All members of the Church of Ireland who are over the age of 18 and are either resident within the parish or live elsewhere but have been accustomed members of the congregation for at least three months may register as members of the General Vestry of the parish, allowing them to attend and vote at meetings of the General Vestry and to stand for election to the Select Vestry. Meetings of the General Vestry are held at least once a year. The Select Vestry is elected as part of the General Vestry meeting. The Select Vestry will hold their positions for a period of one year. The Select Vestry members may be re-elected annually and there is no limit on the number of terms which may be served.
## Organisational Structure
The Select Vestry is responsible for the day to day management of the parish. The Select Vestry consists of the clergy serving in the parish, the church wardens, the glebe wardens and generally not more than 12 other members of the General Vestry elected at the General Vestry. The Select Vestry is chaired by the Rector. Select Vestry members are responsible for making

decisions on matters of general concern and importance to the parish including deciding how parish funds are to be applied. Trustees are elected by the Select Vestry.

The parish has given careful consideration to the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland’s guidance on public benefit to ensure that the activities entered into during the year have helped to achieve the parish’s objectives and activities, as well as providing public benefit.
## Statement of Trustee’s Responsibilities
The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Report and the statement of receipts and payments and statement of assets and liabilities in accordance with applicable law and regulations.
The law applicable to charities in Northern Ireland with income of less than £250,000 requires the trustees to prepare a statement of receipts and payments and a statement of assets and liabilities for each financial year.
The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain the parish’s transactions and disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the assets and liabilities of the parish. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the parish and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities

**Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Edenderry Parish Church** I report on the accounts of Edenderry Parish Church for the year ended 31 December 2023, which are set out on pages 9 to 12.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008. It is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 65 of the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008
- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland under section 65(9)(b) of the Charities Act
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**
I have examined the Church accounts as required under section 65 of the Charities Act and my examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland under section 65(9)(b) of the Charities Act.
My examination included a review of the accounting records kept by the Church and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also included consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as charity trustees concerning any such matters.
My role is to state whether any material matters have come to my attention giving me cause to believe:
1. That accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 63 of the Charities Act
2. That the accounts do not accord with those accounting records
3. That the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act
4. That there is further information needed for a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

I have completed my examination and have no concerns in respect of the matters (1) to (4) listed above and, in connection with following the Directions of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, I have found no matters that require drawing to your attention.

## **1. Accounting policies**
Set out below are the principal accounting policies that have been adopted in the compilation of the Receipts and Payments Account and the Statement of Assets and Liabilities.
- (a) Receipts and Payments Account
All items of income and expenditure included within the Receipts and Payments Account have been accounted for on a cash receipts basis.
## (b) Statement of Assets and Liabilities
## _Assets retained for the Parish’s own use_
The assets of the Parish, retained for its own use comprise:
- Church building and graveyard
- Church hall
- Rectory and outbuildings
All of the above buildings are deemed to be Heritage assets as defined by the Charities SORP (FRS102). These Heritage assets are included in the statement of assets and liabilities at insurance valuation as a professional valuation is not available and such information cannot be obtained at a cost commensurate with the benefit to the users of the accounts and to the parish. Heritage assets are not depreciated.

## **4. Transactions with related parties and trustees**
During the year, expenses were reimbursed totalling £1,434 to the Rector, £206 to Mr Roy Graham and £100 to Mr Adrian Pollock. No other trustee received any remuneration or reimbursement of expenses during the year. No trustee or a person related to a trustee had any personal interest in any contract or transaction entered into by the Church during the year.
