## **STRUCTURE AND MANAGEMENT**

## **The Kirk Session**

The charity trustees of the congregaGon are the members of its Kirk Session. Under the congregaGon’s governing document, The Code, the book of the consGtuGon and government of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the Kirk Session seeks to watch over and promote the spiritual interest of the congregaGon and of persons not connected with any congregaGon who are within its bounds. It ensures pastoral care is in place in the congregaGon and seeks to further the contribuGon of the Church to ChrisGan witness and service in the local community. The Kirk Sessions has delegated to its CongregaGonal CommiSee the temporal affairs of the congregaGon including administering all funds and property belonging to the congregaGon. Members of the Kirk Session are ex-officio members of the CongregaGonal CommiSee.

The Kirk Session consists of the ordained minister and the ruling elders of the congregaGons. All members are enGtled to propose, speak and exercise equal votes at meeGngs, except that the Moderator, the ministers in acGve duty in the congregaGon, has no deliberaGve but only a casGng vote.

Stated meeGngs of the Kirk session are held at least eight Gmes a year.

a regular aSendant on its ordinances. The selecGon of those proposed to be called to the office can be either by the congregaGon or by the Kirk Session. Members are elected if they obtain two-thirds of those who vote.

## **Presbytery**

Under the Presbyterian Church in Ireland form of governance the corporate oversight of a congregaGon is the responsibility of a Presbytery which superintends generally the spiritual and temporal affairs of the congregaGons assigned to it by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Abbots Cross congregaGon of the Presbyterian Church has been assigned to the North Belfast Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. The membership of the Presbytery consists mainly of the acGve ministers of congregaGons assigned to it by the General Assembly, minsters who have reGred from acGve duty and an elder appointed by the Kirk Session of the congregaGon.

## **The General Assembly**

The General Assembly is the supreme court of the Church, represenGng in one body the whole Church and acGng as its supreme legislaGve, administraGon and judicial authority, in dealing with all maSers brought before it. The General Assembly is normally consGtuted during the first week in June for worship and to conduct its business. At the end of business, it is dissolved. The membership of the General Assembly consists mainly of the acGve ministers of each congregaGon, reGred minsters and a representaGve elder appointed by the Kirk Session of each congregaGon.

## **DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE**

The charitable purpose of the congregaGon is the advancement of the ChrisGan religion.

Abbots Cross congregaGon of the Presbyterian Church is a congregaGon of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. The Presbyterian Church in Ireland, as a Reformed Church within the wider body of Christ is grounded in the Scriptures and exists to love and honour God through faith in His Son and by the power of His Spirit, and to enable her members to play their part in fulfilling God’s mission to our world.

The congregaGons mission purpose is ‘Know Jesus through his teaching, Show Jesus in how we live, and Go for Jesus into the world.

At Abbots Cross we believe we are called to share the love of Jesus in word and deed with those who don’t yet know Him. We're also called to support, encourage and equip those who are followers of Jesus. We organise ourselves to best facilitate this. At Abbots Cross we believe in the Mission of God. We believe that we are called to be missional disciples of Christ who live out our faith on our everyday 'Frontlines'. As we do so we parGcipate with God as He works, drawing people to Himself. We believe this to be a fundamental and very exciGng part of who we are.

In addiGon to equipping our members we seek to engage with those on our doorstep, in the local community and around the world, irrespecGve of their beliefs or ethnic origins.

## **ACTIVITIES AND OBJECTIVES**
