The New Year ahvays means the start of the Captain Ball Season. As always it is encouraging to See the younEer girls develop their skills and doing their best tp be chosen for the unit team. The Guides also completed the Chinese 14ew Year Challenge badge. The Rangers indulged in a cooking challenge. making a rather spicey curry followed by chocolate brownies. The unit also took part in the Alr Ambulance Challenge. The guides led prayers and all units renewed their promise at the church annual youth service. After February Half Temi both Guides and Ranger5 continued working on the Communicate Skill Builders. but due to lock down we did not complete all of our planned artivities. We were unable to meet in any format until September 2020. The pandemTC continued to impact on the Guiding programme during 2020121. Even though we were permitted to meet face to face in September we took the decision that we would not do so because the girls attend so many different schi)ols and we did not want to mix bubbles. However, we did rneet weekly on Zoom, wlth the Rangers adoptin8 the role of Young Leaders. We also saw our numbers fall. but 12 girts met together each Tuesday throughout the winter tem. We managed a wide variety of activities on Zoom from craft to baking, with the leaders commenting that this was the way fonvard because we didn't have to tidy up afterwardsl Vlsiting presenters led sessions on yoga. fraud prevention, making paracord bracelets and knot tying. Girlguiding U15ter provided us with materials suitable for use in online sessions, Including Escape Rooms based around the stories associated with Lorne house {Girlguiding Ulster'5 headquarters). The girls also completed the following badges Children in Need, Happy Christma5, Shine, Lorne Escape floom, I￿e Been a Wirtual Guide The usual events that add structure to the year could not EO ahead in their nomal VRY due to the pandemic. Instead of the usual RBL Remembrance Parade with the other uniformed or£anisations one of the leaders laid a wreath on behalf of the units at the war memorial. The girls painted stones with reMernbran￿ messages, and these were placed on the steps of the war memorial. We olso took part in the virtual church carol Se￿ICe. with each girl contributing a verse to one of the readings Health restriction5 changed the way we met this year, but the girls are to be praised for thelr commitment each week tuming up and taking part in all of the online artivities the whole way through lockdown.
