Purpose :
The principal function of the Parish is to support the advancement of the Christian religion by promoting through the work of the St Andrew’s Killyman the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. Being open to and engaging with society as a whole and offering support for those needing help is fundamental to the practical delivery of the tenets of Christianity. As a result of activity in pursuit of the advancement of the Christian religion, the Parish has custody of a large body of records, materials and artefacts of significance to the cultural heritage, the maintenance of which is undertaken by the Parish as a secondary charitable purpose.
Recruitment and Appointment of Select Vestry (Trustees ):
All members of the Church of Ireland who are over the age of 18 years and are either resident within the Parish or living elsewhere but being an accustomed member of the congregation, may register as members of the General Vestry of the Parish, allowing them to attend and vote at meetings of the General Vestry and to stand for election to the Select Vestry. Meetings of the General Vestry are held once a year. The Select Vestry is elected as part of this General Vestry meeting. The Select Vestry will hold their positions for a period of one year. Select Vestry members may be re-elected annually and there is no time limit on the number of terms which may be served. The Select Vestry members are the Charity Trustees.
Objectives and Activities :
All the functions of St Andrew’s Killyman relate to the advancement of the Christian religion through holding regular worship and communicating with and caring for parishioners and others in our community and in the wider world. Below you will find a summary of the main activities.
Worship Services are held each Sunday. These include a range of different types of services such as Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, Holy Communion, Holy Baptism, All Age Worship, Healing Services and Hymns of Praise. Special weekday services are held during Advent, Lent, Holy Week and for Harvest Thanksgiving. The input of the Parish Choir and Praise Band
greatly enhances the worship in Church. The Parish Choir returned to the Choir stalls and to rehearsals in September 2022 after the Corona Virus Pandemic.
Sunday School recommenced in May 2022 and meets each Sunday during term time. Approximately 60 children are registered and there is an average attendance of 45-50 children each Sunday morning. The Sunday School children read, lead the prayers and sing at All Age Worship once a month.
Bible Class and Connected Youth Group (both for Secondary age pupils) alternate their weekly meetings between Bible Class on a Sunday morning and Connected on a Sunday evening.
Weekly Activities on offer meet the needs of a wide range of ages and people in the parish and community:
-
Working with the shared Common Protocols, we provide premises for the Girlguiding sections – Rainbows, Brownies and Guides; and the Scout sections – Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
-
During the week a Badminton Club, a Bowling Club and keep fit classes operate from the Parish Hall.
-
A Craft Class meets weekly, Mothers’ Union meet monthly and Good Companions our senior fellowship group meet bi-monthly for food, fun and fellowship.
Our Child Protection Policy is in accordance with the “Safeguarding” policies of the Church
of Ireland. The same policy also applies to those who would be termed vulnerable adults.
Mission Outreach at Home and Abroad
St Andrew’s Killyman is committed to reaching out into our local community with the Good News of God’s Love through our witness in Word and Action. We
work closely with other agencies in doing this including Church Mission Society Ireland and are involved in a mission link programme with North Kivu Diocese, Democratic Republic of Congo where we provided funds to build a children’s home. Bishop Issesumo from DR Congo visited the Parish in August 2022 and was hosted by 2 families.
We also have a link through SAMS South American Mission Society with Pastor Anderson Sanchez and his 3 churches in Lima, PERU. Funds from the cancelled mission trip in 2020 continue to be released to support the work with the soup kitchens and the youth work within the churches. Regular updates are shared with the parishioners in the Parish magazine.
The Parish supports Dungannon Food Bank with an ongoing collection point in the Parish Hall. At Christmas the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal took place which supported Samaritan’s Purse. Parishioners regularly knit items which are sent for babies in the local hospitals. The Parish also supported an appeal to send items to Ukraine after the war commenced.
Pastoral Care
All pastoral care is provided on a confidential basis to those in need. During the vacancy the Rural Dean provided pastoral care. From November 2022, for a period of 6 months, Revd.
Chris Broddle was appointed to lead church services and do one day of pastoral work in the parish each week.
Compliance with Public Benefit
The Trustees have given careful consideration to the Charity Commission for Northern
Ireland’s guidance on public benefit to ensure that the activities entered into during the
year have helped to achieve the Parish’s objectives and activities as well as providing public benefit.
Financial Review
For the 2022 financial year the balance on 31[st] December 2022 was £117,358.70.
Each year, direct giving forms a major part of the Church’s income. In 2022 this was approximately £ 3,700 (4.5%) more than in 2021. These figures do not include gift-aid tax refund.
Following the restrictions from 2020 and 2021, the Church building was open for worship during all of 2022. There were no periods of closure and the Diocesan office in Armagh provided cover for all services during the year.
The Christmas Craft Fair took place for the first time since 2019. This raised a total of £3415.00.
A rebate of £1115.32 was received from NI Water. This was for electricity bills paid by the
parish, for the pumping station, since it’s adoption by NI Water in 2019.
The Parish’s contribution to the Diocesan Sustentation Fund for the year was £48157.19 - approximately £20,000.00 less than the figure for 2021. This reduction was due to the parish being vacant, i.e. having no full-time minister.
Apart from the Diocesan assessment and every day running costs, the three other major, one-off items of expenditure were:
-
Upgrading the Church building’s lightning conductor- £8025.60.
-
Upgrading the Church building’s audio visual and recording system£3011.62.
-
Painting in the Church porch and some of the windows- £2231.50.
The cost of electricity and heating oil also increased significantly over the
year. Missionary Account:
£4000.00 from the missionary account was sent to SAMS to support the work of the parish’s
mission partners in PERU.
This £4000.00 was in addition to the £4451.16 which was donated to missionary societies and other worthy causes from Church funds.
