OUR ORGANISATION:
PURPOSES AND BENEFITS
Scouting exists to actively engage and support young people in their personal development,
empowering them to make a positive contribution to society. The beneficiaries of first
Newcastle Scouts Group are children and young people in the Newcastle and wider South
East Down area and the communities to which they belong. They do this by gaining awards
and badges set up by the Scout Association. They learn knowledge and skills which will be
useful to them throughout their lives.
GOVERNANCE
STRucfuRE
Our governing document is based on the Royal Charter of the Scout Association, which in
turn gives authority to the By Laws of the Association and the Policy, Organisation and Rules
of the Scout A55ociation.
The group is a trust established under rules which are common to all Scouts. Trustees are
appointed in accordance with the Policy, Organisation and rules of the Scout Association.
OVERVIEW GROUP
1st Newcastle Scout Group is one of the longest existing cross community organisations and
th
one of the oldest existing scout groups in N.1. It celebrated its 110 anniversary in 2018.
We meet in our own premises in Valentia Place. We have an ongoing varied programme of
activities for all sections of the Group, which is reviewed on an annual basis. We regularly
make use of the wonderful local natural facilities we have in Newcastle for outdoor
activities e.g. beach litter picks, forest runs. We also have a campsite at Tipperary Woods
within walking distance from the scout hall. All sections use this for outdoor badge work
and overnight camps throughout the year. We have good links with local organisations such
as the RNLI and the Fire Service and have several educational visits during the year.

ANNUAL REVIEW
to end of March 2024
Membership numbers of both Scouts and Cubs remain healthy. This is particularly
impressive with regard to the Cubs because of the lack of a Beaver group providing a natural
feeder group. It has required a lot of additional effort from the Cub leader5 to promote the
group in the community in order to build up numbers over the past year.
Both groups have had an enjoyable and successful year working towards their badges.
Good community links have been built on and new ones started in order to help some of
these badges.
Tipperary Wood campsite continues to be well used for outdoor skills.
Maintenance of the hall in the form of new heaters and fixings were undertaken by Gordons
Electrical which has ensured the hall is a more comfortable environment for weekly
activities.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Details as per attached accounts.
The largest expenditure this year was provision and installation of new heaters.
There are currently no outstanding debts for the group. There is over £13,00 in the bank, a
good contingency fund if any further repairs are required.
