The Scout Association exists to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities and as a group this purpose underpins everything we do.
As the trustees for 2[nd] Bangor (Abbey) Scout group we incorporate our benefit statement into our programmes, empowering young people to make positive contributions to society through being engaged and supported in their personal development, including physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually. This benefit is demonstrated through Scouting making a positive impact in our communities; preparing young people to be active citizens; embracing and contributing to social change; being diverse as the communities in which we operate. These are evidenced by feedback from our beneficiaries and the wider community. There is no harm arising from our purposes. Scouting operates within a framework of safety to enable young people to take part in adventurous activities safely. Scouting beneficiaries are children young people. The only private benefit from this purpose is that Adult Volunteers are trained to deliver the programme, but this is incidental and necessary because it is needed to operate in today’s society working with young people.
The group is sponsored by Bangor Abbey Church of Ireland. We have no liabilities and our assets are limited to a small amount of camping equipment i.e. tents, shelters and cooking equipment and also a trailer which is approaching the end of its life.
Here is a short report from each section:
2[nd ] Bangor (Abbey) Beavers
Beavers have had a great year with approx. 24 Beavers. We continue to foster an environment of cooperation and friendship within our Beaver Colony and encouraging the children to help one another and work and play together whilst they learn about the world around them and work towards their badges.
The highlight of the year for Beavers has been the Beaver Rally Day in May 2022. We were delighted to have Beavers as young as 6 camping overnight!
Beavers also enjoyed a trip to see Santa in December.
Our Beavers worked towards lots of badges this year including, My World, Teamwork, Outdoor and many more!
Cubs had a fantastic year with approx. 36 cubs in the pack. We spent this year working on a variety of badges including scientist, entertainer, faith, outdoor challenge, adventure challenge.
Cubs and Scouts once again enjoyed a summer camp at The Venture Centre in Isle of Man. The cubs had a fantastic time and a variety of water activities including canoeing, kayaking, coasteering and gorge walking.
The Scout section continues to grow and we were delighted to join with the Cubs on a 4 day trip to Isle of Man. This is our third year at the Venture Centre and it continues to be as popular as ever.
Scouts took part in a number of lightweight camping expeditions and overnight hikes. We continue to enjoy immersing our scouts in back to basics scouting and they have enjoyed developing their skills in navigation, pioneering and backwoods cooking.
