ril 2022 to March
Derryloran Squirrels had a nature walk where we
had to find various materials that were certain
colours that we find outdoors and easter egg
hunt at Drum Manor which helped our children
work towards our All around us badge and our go
wild badge.
We played some relay games and learned the
rules to games where we had to work together in
teams to work towards the same goal. We
participated in games such as hula hoop and
football relays, balancing bean bags on our
heads, hoopla's, bowling and racing games. This
helped our squirrels become more active and
also work together which helped us achieve in 2
badges which were our be active and all together
badges.
We took part in 2 visits to our local park and to
Drum Manor. At the park we got to have a fun
evening playing together and getting active by
playing on the various climbing frames that the
park had provided. The children really enjoyed
this and it encouraged the children in playing
together more. This helped link to our be active
badge and our all about me badge as it
encouraged the children to play on new play

Scouts
equipment and learn how to use it correctly. We
also had a night in drum manor where we took
part in a nature walk, fed the ducks and had a
play in the park. This night in drum manor was
linked to our all around us badge and our go wild
badges.
During September we held a taster night, where
we encouraged the current squirrels to bring a
friend to squirrels. We had various arts and crafts
held that night, decorated biscuits and also
played together in small groups to take part in
games together. This night helped us achieve
goals in our superchef, get creative, all together
and be active. This month we also started work
on our all about me badge where we set the
squirrels a challenge of learning the squirrels
promise and being able to say at the beginning of
each session every week.
In October our squirrels got to go on a trip to
Ardnavalley where we got to take part in a
superhero day and got to see fire engines,
ambulances and got to participate in an army
obstacle course and build a den using tree
branches and a blanket. We also got to sit
together and toast marshmallows and also play
an indoor game where we sat together and
discussed what we like and dislike about
squirrels. This trip helped us achieve aims in our
brilllant builder, all around us, all about me, feel
good, be active and local superhero badges.

Scouts
We also had a space themed night where we
learnt about the different planets in space and
we played a game linked to this and finished off
the night by creating various moons using Oreo
biscuits. This helped us achieve aims in our
superchef badge.
We also took part in a show and tell night which
helped us work towards our all about me badge.
Each squirrel brought an item from home that
they like and each squirrel stood up and talked
about what their item was and what they like
about it. We also played parachute games this
night and we created a promise plate to help us
learn our promise a bit better by having it at
home to learn from.
We also held a Halloween themed night where
our squirrels got to dress up and take part in fun
games together where they had to help build a
witch together and then we finished off our night
by toasting marshmallows and making smores
which went towards our superchef and all about
adventure badge.
We also took part in a cookery night where we
made ourselves pizza bagels and we tried new
foods in the form of different fruits and cereals
which helped us finish off our superchef badge.
Also, this month our harvest service took place in
Derryloran church where our squirrels were
encouraged to donate tinned food which was to
go towards the women's refuge. By doing this it

Scouts
helped us work towards our all around us badge.
In November we had a special visit from our local
police team where they talked to us about what
they do to help our community and they allowed
our squirrels to ask questions and we also got to
try on some of their equipment and got to see
inside a police car and van. This helped our
squirrels finish off our local superhero badge.
We had a builder theme night as well where our
squirrels worked together in teams to build
bridges out of card, paper and plastic cups to see
who could make the strongest bridge to hold
lego blocks. We also worked together in teams
again to build forts to hold ourselves in which
was a lot of fun. We then had a worksheet to do
and colour in whilst in our forts which was a
helpful hand worksheet and it encouraged us to
think of 5 ways that we could help out at home.
This helped go towards part of our all about me
badge.
We had a story time theme night at squirrels to
help us gain our story time badge. Each squirrel
brought in their favourite book from home and
talk about what it was about and why they like it.
A story was read to the squirrels which was all
about ice cream which the squirrels really
enjoyed. We discussed a lot after this book about
what our favourite ice cream flavours are.
We had a science night in squirrels this month
which helped us gain our exciting experiments

Scouts
badge. We started off the night by creating a
colourful spinner which we made using wool,
circled card and felt tip pens. When we made
this, we were able to see how the colour we used
and patterns we made can mix together when in
a spinning formation. We then got into small
groups and created small mini volcanoes using
baking soda, food colouring and vinegar. We hid
the colours under the baking soda and the
squirrels took it in turns to add the vinegar and
we had to guess what colours were going to
appear. During this experiment we discussed
what happened during the experiment, what
smells were caused, what colours we seen and
what happened such as bubbles forming and
fizzing noises, etc.
We also held a Christmas party night
We did some work on our brilliant builder badge
where each team of squirrels were working
together to build string houses and each team
took time to discuss what designs they made
their houses. We also started work on our feel-
good badge as we learnt about different feelings
and about how different things make us feel
happy, sad, angry, scared, excited, etc. We
played a game where we learned how different
things make us feel.
We worked towards the last aim of our be
creative badge by using play dough to create our
favourite animal, food, toy, etc. we then did

Scouts
more work towards our go wild badge by using
yogurt pots to plant watercress seeds in and
each squirrel was able to take this home so that
they could learn how to take care of their
watercress.
We did a night to finish off our let's celebrate
badge by having a Chinese New Year theme
night. We coloured in and decorated Chinese
lanterns. We learned about the different animals
associated with Chinese New Year and we played
a game where we had to act these animals out.
We also got to eat some of our favourite sweets
but by using chopsticks which didn't make it too
easy to eat. Each squirrel was then sent home
with a fortune cookie as a treat.
For our creative badge the squirrels worked in 2
groups to create squirrel pictures using twigs,
leaves and various outdoor items. We then
played a hoop game where we did different
actions and then we had to pick a colour each
time the word hoop is shouted out. We also took
part in some singing of heads, shoulders, knees
and toes which got faster and faster each time.
We id more work on our go wild badge by
making bird food which we made together and
took home for us to set outside for our little
feathered friends. We then made a simple bird
feeder by threading cheerios through a pipe
cleaner which the squirrels took home to feed
our birds.

Scouts
We also held a superhero night where the
squirrels came dressed up as their favourite
superheroes. We played a game about different
superpowers, we then played another game
where we had to answer questions about
firemen, doctor and police. There were 3 hoops
red for fireman, green for doctor and blue for
police and we had to run to each hoop if the
question was about one of them. We then
learned about how dentists care for our teeth we
had pictures of teeth and the squirrels had to
colour on food on them and then use
toothbrushes and water to help clean the food
away. We then had a small discussion about how
dentists help us look after our teeth.
We worked towards our world around us
challenge badge we had a night where each
squirrel was given a picture of a shop or building
in Cookstown and each squirrel took it in turns to
discuss what their building was and how they
provide us with a service in Cookstown. We then
created our very own flags and finished off the
night by trying some pain au chocolat and
learning what country it comes from.
We had a mother's theme night where we ha
began the night discussing what our mums do to
help us. We created lovely cards for our mums by
making flowers from cupcake cases and also
hearts uslng tlssue paper.
We also held a games night where achieved aims

Scouts
in our altogether and be active badges. We
learned a new game where the squirrels were
divided up into teams of 4 and named after a
colour. Multiple coloured balls were thrown all
over the floor and the squirrels had to get all
their coloured balls back in their hoop in the
quickest time. We then played a quiet game
where a squirrel was blindfolded in the middle
and the rest of the squirrels were circled around
them. A squirrel was selected to steal the keys
and the squirrel in the middle had to guess who
stole their keys. We also took part in relay
games which involved hopping, kicking the ball
and hula hooping.
We had an easter themed night where we made
easter nest buns and we took part in an easter
egg hunt which helped go towards our superchef
badge and out all about adventure badges,
Beavers April 2022 - March 2023
Our Beaver colony was back to meeting weekly on a
Monday evening with a programme covering badgework,
games and craft activities.
10 Beavers attended Rally Day at Crawfordsburn in May
where they took part in adventurous activities such as crate
climbing, grass sledging, army assault course as well as
learning about our Emergency Services.
In the summer term, Beavers were very successful at
growing cress as part of the gardeners badge and also
enjoyed trips out to the local park.
A sleepover in October at the hall was great fun for 8
intrepid Beavers with games, craft, movie, campfire and
smores!

Scouts
The highlight of the Autumn term was joining up with
Beavers from all over County Londonderry for a trip to
Fultons Pumpkin Patch. The extremely wet weather and
mud didn't dampen enthusiasm for this trip and everyone
returned home with a pumpkin to carve.
Badges earned included the new Money Skills badge, Air
Activities, Disability, Gardening, lots of Hobby and collector
badges, Sport, Experiment and Challenge badges.
Two Beavers were presented with their Chief Scout Bronze
Awards before moving up to Cubs.

Derryloran Cub Scouts
Report Aprll 2022 to March 2023
The number of cubs is getting back to what it was before Covid. This
group of young people are not keen on crafts, but love to earn badges
and take part in sports.
The cubs have completed their Road Safety, Flre Safety, Gardner,
Disabillty, First Aid, Money Skills, Communications and some challenge
badges too.
We had a visit from the local P5NI, they showed us their uniform and

Our annual trlp to Drum Manor meant we could complete the
Photography badge and the evening was finished off with hot dogs and
smores.
They worked well as a group and unfortunately there was no take up
for our annual camp.
There were no County or Northern Ireland events this year either for
our cubs to go to.
Three cubs moved up to the Scout sectlon.
Derryloran scouts have had another year filled with fun and

everyone to have a great time.
The Explorers and Scouts combined to put their map
reading skills to the test by doing a day hike round Vinegar
Hill Loop. Hot drinks were greatly appreciated at the end of
the hike, using our new trangias and stoves.
A number of young people took part in a Joint Camp with 1
Cookstown at Lorne Camp Site. The activities on offer
included the Flintstone challenge (making and racing a
Flintstone style car), Gladiator rope challenge, Gorge
