Chairman’s Report 12th Bangor Scout Group
AGM May 2019
It takes considerable organization to run any Scout Group, especially one as successful as 12[th] Bangor.
To give you some idea of the scale of the 12[th] Bangor Group we currently have approximately 154 boys and girls attending the various sections during the week and that does not include the Squirrels or the Explorers.
Behind the scenes an Executive committee (made up of the GSL, Section Leaders, parent representatives and office bearers) meet between 3 and 4 times a year.
The committee discusses the work and activities being undertaken by each of our sections, the allocation of resources and any pressing matters within the Group.
Advances are also being realized with the roll out of various IT systems to assist with the running of 12[th] Bangor. They cover a wide range of issues such as compliance, training and subscriptions.
This work has been closely supported by the District team and is ongoing.
We would wish to encourage more parents to get involved in volunteering, leading and assisting behind the scenes.
If anyone is keen to express an interest by all means approach the GSL or Section leaders for more information about how you can get involved in Scouting.
There have been many highlights during the past 12 months which will be touched upon shortly by the section leaders but needless to say your kids will have had the opportunity to develop a wide range of life skills at events close to home, across the UK and further afield.
In addition to the office bearers I would wish to take this opportunity to thank the respective section leaders, volunteers and helpers for all the work put in over the past 12 months as without their dedication and commitment 12[th] Bangor would not continue to have the success it so rightly deserves.

Beaver Scouts
Our Beaver Colony continues to meet in 2 sessions on Thursday nights.
We had 14 beavers move up to cubs in September 2017, and 8 more in February. In total 13 of these beavers were awarded their Chief Scouts Bronze Award, the highest award for Beavers. During the
year we enrolled 27 new beavers, including 13 squirrels. We ended this year with 43 beavers and although we do still have a waiting list, its not as long as it has been in the past.
We held our sponsored walk at Mount Stewart in April as the usual walk from Crawfordsburn at the beginning of March had been cancelled due to bad weather. Beavers enjoyed playing in the park after the walk, and especially the sausages they had along the way. Many thanks to scouts for providing these.
We attended Rally Day at Crawfordsburn in May.
Unfortunately due to changes in their circumstances, Nicole and Gillian were unable to return to our Thursday night meetings, but thanks to them for all their hard work last year. Gillian is still helping on our days out, many thanks to her for this. We were very pleased that Ruth was able to return in September, unfortunately she has had to take some more time off but we are hopeful she will be able to return next September. We are pleased to have Rhys McLean and Michael Curran both join our leader team, both former beavers who came up right through our group.
Our first outing of the new year was a very interesting visit to Armagh Planetarium in October where 23 beavers completed activities for our Space Activity badge. We had a visit to the Scout Centre at Crawfordsburn in November to do adventurous activities
of crate climbing and archery - Adventurous Activities and sleepovers are an important part of the Beaver Scout programme and we encourage as many beavers as possible to take part at least once before they move on to cubs as without these they will not be able to obtain their Chief Scouts Bronze Award.
For our Christmas outing this year we visited Christmas at Balloo, to play games, do craft and to see Santa. This was the second year for this event which is run by District Explorer Scouts and was enjoyed by all the beavers who attended.
In January we held our indoor sleepover at Ardnavalley, with a good attendance of 18 beavers. And we took part in the District sponsored walk which was held on the usual first Saturday in March.
We continue to do badge work on an almost weekly basis in order to give all beavers the chance to attain their 6 Challenge badges, as well as giving them the opportunity to collect a wide range of activity badges throughout the year.
Many thanks to all parents and leaders from other sections who helped us during the year, both on regular meeting nights and on days out – much appreciated.
Also thanks to all the parents who ensure Beavers attend on a regular basis and participate fully in all the activities, which makes our job much easier and more rewarding.

Beaver Leader
Cub Scouts
The cubs have enjoyed a varied programme this year.
They will have completed eight activity badges and several challenge badges over the course of the year. These include air activities, disability awareness, chef, diy, entertainer, athletes, cyclist and pioneer. The earn the badge the cubs completed the various elements of the badges. For example - making
paper airoplanes, learning sign language, cooking dinner, using a saw, putting on a puppet show with a puppet made at cubs, learning about warm up, cycling a course, and making pioneering projects.
The cubs have attended several camps in October we went to Ballyhornan scout centre for Harry Potter camp the cubs did lots of crafts associated with harry potter and played games this was after the sorting hat sorted them into their house for the weekend. In March the sixers and seconders attended spy camp this was a joint camp with 7th Bangor. The cubs dressed like spies and learnt code etc as well and investigations. In June we will be heading to Crawfordsburn for space camp.
This September six cubs attended the soap box race in Chichester England this years team where awarded the fair play award. Again a fantastic enjoyable weekend.
The cubs have had several outing these included a Cinema trip to see the grinch, 10 pin Bowling at the ice bowl and Archery at the new elite archery site.
May I take this opportunity to thank the parents for bringing the cubs along each week and the leaders for all the effort put in to ensure the cubs enjoy each week as there is a lot of backstage work for weekly programmes and especially camps.
Thanks
Jo
Scouts
Group Scout Leader, Mr Chairman and members of the Group, I am delighted to report that the scout section has had another successful year of scouting and that our Vision for 2023, #SkillsForLife remains a core tenet in everything that we do.
In April there was the annual St. Georges Day Parade and those who attended were well turned out. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend as I was attending the South Down District Parade- Thank you to Cody and Davy who took the lead.
In June the Scouts finished the year at camp. This saw a number of Scouts move from scouts to explorers and we wish the best in their new scouting adventures.
In the Summer, Both the Scout section and Bangor East Explorer Unit attended summer camp in the Lancashire – Red Rose 2018. This really was a camp filled with adventure! Scouts took part in water sports, caving, and mountain climbing among other activities. The weather wasn’t as kind as we expected, being a further north than we are used to. Despite this all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I must express my thanks to Don and Lorraine McEvoy to take the lead on summer camp, I think everyone involved would agree that it really couldn’t happen without them.
Unfortunately, the annual District Camp was postponed from our usual weekend to mid 2019. In September we welcomed a number of new Cubs to the section.
The Christmas Party was held again in Elite Archery were a number of scouts enjoyed a night of archery lead by Michael and his team. We also saw another group of Scouts leave to start a new adventure in Explorers.
Early January saw 13 young people from 12[th] Bangor receive their Chief Scout’s Gold Award in Belfast City Hall Presented by both the NI and UK Chief Commissioners.
I am delighted to report that Peter Donaldson was selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia and Todd McEvoy was selected to attend Eurojam in Poland in 2020.
This just leaves me to say a huge thank you to all who supported the section over that past year.
Evan Fleming
