Chairpersons Report
The fiscal year 23/24 has been with its challenges, but we did well again with funding, particularly from the National Lottery who awarded us £7,700 to allow us to get the rib retubed. Sammy and Jonny took the task in hand and safely delivered it to the mainland last week for the work to be done and for that we’re very grateful. It was quite the distance.
At the start of 2024 we moved premises to where we are currently. While this has caused an uplift in rent costs which we really didn’t want, we had no option, and there were no other suitable venues. The rent grant that we received at the start of 2023 has now come to an end, so we really need to work together and see how we can generate income to ensure our overheads are paid. I have submitted a couple of grant applications for this however it could be at least February before we hear if we have been successful. Until then if anyone has any ideas to bring in funds quickly, please let us know. The last thing we want to happen is unit closure because we can’t pay the bills.
I want to thank the whole team, UMT and uniformed staff for keeping the unit open, the bills paid, the cadets taught and helping them make the most of the sea cadet experience. It’s been a difficult year for all units, but when you’re a small unit, in a small place like Kilkeel, it adds extra issues that other units don’t have.
Again I’m asking that everyone has a think about who they know that might like to help us, and to actively ask them.
On that, I’m going to now pass to Sammy as OCO to give his report before we then hear from Brenda about our accounts.
END.
