The Committee also looked at risk assessment and general data protection issues relating to the Society. Membershlp At 31 December 2022 the Society had maintained its 2021 level of 62 members drawn mainly from the Ards and North Down Borough Council area. Visitor numbers for the year remained steady at 203 compared with 201 in 31 December 2021. Purposes under The Charltles Art (Northern Irelandj 2008 (a)The Advancement of Educatlon; and (b) 'Heritage' under The Advancement of the Arts, Culture, Heritage or Sclence. The Society's activities directly benefit its members and visitors, who come mainly from the Ards and North Down Borough Council area of Northern Ireland atid Greater Belfast. Beneficiaries include Speakers and, whenever outings are held, the proprietors of historlc buildings and museums visited,. also coach companies and restaurants/cafes who service the Society's OUtin8s. The rent for premises benefitted Ards and North Down Borough Council up to the Society's final meeting of April 2022 in North Down Museum. From 8 September 2022 the Society rented a hall at Queen's Parade Methodist Church and paid insurance premiums to cover the Societ¢s activities and its trustees, public liabilitv. These private benefits are incidental and necessary because the Society could not function without these services from the wider community. In addition, the existence and activities of the Society encourage respect for the preservation of local heritage which Is also important to the tourist trade. To this end the Society may decide to support projects and events which promote or preserve local heritage. The Society's purposes do not lead to any harm. Membetship of other organlsatlons The Society is a member of the Federation for Ulster Local Studies Ltd (FULS) which promotes communication and co-operation between local historical societies and with similar bodies. The Federation's magazine 'Due North, also provides informatlve papers on historical subjects. Through FULS the Society insures its members by a Public Liability Insurance Scheme. Due to the effects of the Corona Virus pandemic upon attendances at historical Society meetings and outings, FULS excused all its members, including Bangor Historical Society, from paying premiums for the period l April 2021 to 30 September 2022. The Society is also a member of The Northern Ireland Councll for Voluntary Actlon {NICVA) which represents voluntary and community bodies throughout Northern Ireland. Contact is ongoing with FULS and NICVA to ensure that the Society is kept informed of relevant matters and offered relevant trainin8 courses. In 2022 the Society's Treasurer attended online webinars on Funding Matters, Trustee Annual Reporting, General Data Protection Regulations and Governance for Trustees. Admlnlstrotlon The Society is based in Bangor and held 4 monthly meetings in 2022 {from January to April) at North Down Museum, rented from Ards & North Down Borough Council. The risin8 numbers attending meetings there failed to comply with health and safety guidelines from Ards and North Down Borough Council and the Society sought new premises for the second half of 2022. The Society acknowledges with thanks the excellent support 8iven by the Museum's Manager, Heather McGuicken and her staff durin8 its meetings at this location. A new venue was finally Secured at The Queen'5 Parade Methodist Church, Bangor where another four meetin85 were held from 8 September to 8 December 2022. Outln Because of the unavoidable absence of the Chairman (who plans and leads outings) none were held this year. Supportlng Heritaqe-sertlon 2lfJ of the Chorlties Art (Northern Ireland) 2008 The Soclety did not provide any financial support to local heritage during 2022 mainly due to the lengthy sickness absence of its Chairman, lan Wllson, whose duties include advice on funding local heritage promotion. Thankfully the Chairman has recovered and resumed this special responsibility in 2023. A new project about the history of shops in Bangor, in which the Society will participate, is at the planning stage. General Doto Protection Regulation (GDPR) GDPR compliance is regularly monitored and member5 presented with copies of the Society's Privacy Policy. On re8iStration they are asked how they wish the Society to contact them. Details of members are held by the Secretary and the Treasurer alone. Dr. Mlllsopp's reports also appear on the Society's website. Publlc Benefit of the SocIet￿5 work Membership levels remained high at 62 plus 201 visitors, all of whom appeared to benefit from the social participation of attending meetings again after the worst period of the Covld-19 par,demic. They clearly found the speakers and their subjects stimulating and enjoyed networking Wlth fellow history enthusiasts. Accounts Bangor Hlstorical Soclety's revenue comes mainly from an annual membership subscription of £15 and a vlsltorfs fee of £3 plus income from subscriptions for any outlngs (none in 2022). No additional funding was sought or received.
