Report on section activities

All sections have been very active and a summary of activities are provided below:

Scouts

We aimed for a varied programme this year with many visits, which included:

The year started in October with raft building at Breckenhill Outdoor Activity Centre, before a short hike carrying tents etc. to a camping location on the hill above the GSL’s house. The 12 Scouts erected their tents, started fires and cooked dinner before an orienteering exercise in the dark. Breaking camp on the Sunday morning was done in pouring rain which helped to reinforce lessons about being organised with personal kit and ready for a change in the weather. A bedraggled but smiling group returned home for Sunday lunch with their families.

We also entered (and won) the District 5 aside football. The District First Aid comp was narrowly lost.

A group of 6 Scouts took part in the ‘Rampage’, an adventure race at JungleNI near Magherafelt. The first water obstacle (with water upto the chin) initially fazed a few but all completed the 4 miles of obstacles and throughly enjoyed the event.

The District camp at the usual location of Shane’s Castle was dry again – this is 3 dry years in a row and can’t be expected to continue! The camp fire kept going throughout the weekend and allowed the Scouts to practise incinerating their breakfast, each day.

Cubs

Cubs again were very well supported with numerous activities and a very successful repeat of the Crawfordsburn Camp.

Beavers

Beavers had a successful year working on various badges and themed nights with an emphasis on National Saints Days. We also looked at Scouting as a worldwide movement.

Beavers enjoyed visits from the Police to talk to us about road safety and strangers danger. In order to help us complete our Disability Awareness Badge we had visits from Guide Dogs for the Blind and a representative from the Society for Deaf Children. Our Christmas celebrations included a successful visit to the Courtyard Theatre to watch Peter Pan.
