The following report piovidcs an overvÉ¢w of the achievements and perforn)ance of the South Amcrican
Mission Society Ireland during the year 2023. Tknoughout the y¢ar, SAMS keland continued its nEISSion to
work in partheiship with tiic local church in Ireland and various Countries in South America, paiti¢ulaily in
Argentina, Chile. Bolivia. Paraguay? Uruguay, alld Peru. The socicty remai1￿ Committed to fostering
meaning￿1 relationships, fa¢ilitatiTEg mutual support, and advancing the gospel of Jesus Chiist through practical
ndcavours.
Achievements and performance
Annual ¢onf¢r¢n¢¢ Friday Night Live Relocation.. The relocation of the Friday Night Live event lo
Annaghmore Parish provided an opporthnity for enhttDced collaboration and fellowship. The event,
themed "Enlarge alld Expanil" was well-received and strengthened lies to mission tn South America as
well as welcoming several Chilean clergy.
2. Mission Director Visit5= Tlie MI ission Director's visits to Pen]. Bolivia, and Chile in February and
March marked the reeslablishmcnt of vital link5 following disruptions caused by the pandeinie. Faee-
to-face interactions emphasised the importance of personal Telatt"onships in gospel mission.
3. FUSION Volunteer Program.. SAMS bid farewell to a valued volunteer from Paraguay who i¥&s
based in Sligo while welcoming 8 new volunteer from Chile who has been volunteering in Lisburn
(Connor Diocese). These connections serve as a bridge between Church of Ireland parislies and
overseas churches, fostering mutual
undL'rbianding &nd support.
4. Trtbute to Retired Treasvr¢r: In March. the funernl of retl￿d Southern Treasurer Felix
Bleiinerl)asseli setycd ¢iS a poignaTtt retninder of the dedication. faithfuliie55 and sacrifice5 made by
volun*ers in furthering the society's mission.
Indigenous Church Network.. The Mission Development orricer's (MDO) coiitiibution to the
fornialion of an Indigenous Church Network in Soiith Americ& via Zoom undeiscorcd SAMS'S
commiuneiit to empowering local cotnmunTlies.
6. Sunday School Resouice Developinent.. SAMS MDO collaborated with PeE)ny de Marces in Peru to
develop Spanish Sunday 5¢hool resources, enriching cduLational opportunities foi church ¢ommuniiies.
7. Church Meetings in Ireland.. SAMS i¢pi¢sentativ¢s traveled to various church meetings in Ireland,
offeiing encouragement end support to Ioc81 congregations engag¢d in mission activitie5.
8. Membership in Association of Mission Societies: SAMS demonstrated its eornmitmenl to the wftder
hurch by maiiitaining evolvemeTht in the Association of Mission Societies (AMS). participating in
eveiits such as Ibe Chiii'ch of Ireland Gener81 Syttod in Wexford.
Diocesan Links-. SAMS Helped lo facilitat¢ the development of new diocesan liiiks between
Santiggo Diocese, Chile, and Down and Dromore Diocese, here in Irelan& fostertng muttTal learning
and collaboration.
We are deeply grate￿7 for those who serve on Gen￿al Council {l￿Stee5}, in a voluiilary capa¢ity giving theiT
time. wisdom and Cpcrgy iii the cause of mission. Bishop Andrew Forsl¢r. wlio continues as a trustce. r¢tired as
chair of thc SANIS Council and was su¢ce¥ded by Rev Peter Jones iii mid 2023. Mission Director, Rcv Stephen
McElhinTrey continues tn his role. As SAMS AdTninistrative and Comniunicaliolls Cooidinalor, Mrs Gillian
Lytsn retrurned from matcrnity Icave in August 2023. W¢ were gt&teful for th¢ s¢rvic¢s of Juli¢ Allen who h&s
assisted during the maternity peillod. Both staff and Council are thankful for Mr Phil Tadmatt who provides
valuable and diligent oversight of the finanees of SAMS Ireland. Billy Blair arjd his wife Laura continue to open
their hearts and home to SAMS volunteers from South Amcriea. SAMS Ir¢l&lld has an iTtlergcnernlional feel to
it with a strong support bÉise in inany local churches and generous praying individual 5UPPOrters. Finally, to all
who Iiave served and who are serving in tlie SAMS Ireland family we say a very Sincere thank you.
