Trustees’ Report
The trustees have pleasure in presenting their report and financial statements for the year ended 31 July 2018.
Objectives and Activities
The principal activity of Smashing Times is the use of the methodology of drama and theatre to promote advancement in education for communities experiencing social and economic disadvantage.
Through a number of projects: 1, Acting for Peace which promotes the advancement of Peace and Reconciliation through interactive educational theatre projects which promote anti racism, anti sectarianism, human rights and equality. 2 Acting for the Future and Move for Life, which uses interactive process of drama and theatre to promote the advancement of positive mental and physical health and suicide prevention among disadvantaged communities in Northern Ireland. There has been no change in the activities during the year.
Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities
The trustees are responsible for obtaining audited financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of state of affairs of Smashing Times Theatre Company and of the surplus or deficit of Smashing Times Theatre Company for that period. In preparing these statements, the trustees are required to:

(a) Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

(b) Observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;
-
(c) Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
-
(d) State whether applicable UK accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements and
-
(e) Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that Smashing Times Theatre Company will continue as an organisation.
The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of Smashing Times Theatre Company and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements have been properly prepared in accordance with the accounting policies. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of Smashing Times Theatre Company and hence for taking reasonable steps for prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
Advancement of the charity’s purpose for public benefit
The Company is established to advance education, to promote the arts and to promote the benefit of the people of Northern Ireland (the “area of benefit”) without distinction of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnic identity, political or religious opinion, and in particular to: a) encourage appreciation for and active participation in performing arts activities; b) to encourage appreciation of the arts and stimulate the artistic creativity of people in the area of benefit by the provision of artistic performances, workshops, training, support and facilities for artistic expression to include the writing and production of contemporary plays of historical and cultural merit to the area of benefit. c) to present, promote, organise, manage and produce performances, workshops, and exhibitions of works of cultural and educational value, including performances, dramas, comedies, broadcasts, television shows, entertainments and exhibitions.

The company has a number of applications for funding outstanding. In keeping with our success for securing Peace funding, we are in the process of developing two applications under the current SEUPB regional call for funding and we continue to explore other funding options that will allow the company to continue its activities to its charitable purpose for public benefit.
Disclosure of Information
Keeping in line with our NIL financial return, there was no activity of the Charitable purpose in the period 1 August 2017- 31 July 2018; as a result we did not have accounts audited for this period, but the NIL return has been confirmed by an independent examiners report.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees on the Unaudited Financial Statements of Smashing Times Theatre Company
Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Independent Examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008. It is my responsibility to state on the basis of my examination, whether particular matters have come to my attention.
This report is made solely to the charitable organisations trustees as a body, in accordance with their instructions. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the charity’s trustees those matters I am required to state to them in a n independent report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charitable organisation and its trustees as a body for the work of this independent report, or for the opinions I have formed.
Basis of Independent Examiners’ Statements
My examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent Examiners’ Statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

(i) Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the trustees have not met the requirements to ensure that:
-
proper books of account are kept in accordance with section 65 of the Charities Act and my examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland under section 65 (9((b) of the Charities Act.

Accounts are prepared which agree with the books of account and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act; or
-
(ii) To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
I have completed my examination and have no concerns in respect of the matters above and, in connection with the following Directions of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, I have found no matters that require drawing to your attention.

Accounting Policies
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended practice “Accounting and Reporting by Charities: (SORP 2015)’ issued in July 2014.
Grants – There were no grants received in the reporting period.
Income and Expenditure – There was no income or expenditure in the reporting period and there was no activity of the Charitable purpose in the period 1 August 2017- 31 July 2018; as a result we did not have accounts audited for this period, but the NIL return has been confirmed by an independent examiners report.
