Qblectlves and actlvities
St Bri8id's Women's Group was establlshed fn October 1999, to empower women Ilvin8 In
the Carnhill Area (SOA Carrthlll 1&2). A small group of local women came together to dlscuss
ways in which women wlthln the Carnhlll estate could rnove fonvard, irnprove thelr Ilfe
chances & effect P05itlve change for themselve5 & their communlty. The group Is based
withln Camhill, an area that Is particularly deprived & Impoverlshed especlally In tern15 of
employment opportunitie5. Poverty & unemployment In Carnhlll have exacerbated a whole
range of soclal problems, Includlns famlly breakdown, poor healthi Youth disaffection,
drugs & crlme. The recent deprlwatlon Indlces have ranked Carnhlll in the top IO% of wards
In Nl sufferin8 for multlple deprivation, child poverty, Income deprlvatlon & health
deprlvat5on. Since October 1999, the group have rented a small room wlthln the local
parish hall. Wlth help from small grants, local fundralslng & donatlons In kind the 8roup
has been able to dellver varfous courses such as Tia Chi. Aqua Aerobics, Swimmlng
Lessons, Zumba Gold, Healthy Eating, Creative writing• Knlttlng I Crochetln& Arts &
Craft5, Personal Development, Cornrnunlty Development tralnln8 & vlslts to Stomiont
to talk to polltlcal partles to dlscuss Ihe Issue5 that effect them & their communlty. For local
chlldren each year we set up a summer scheme & a bus trlp to the beach for the local
residents i.e. parents childrÉn, grandparents etG
