Portglenone Senior Citizens Arts and Craft Club operate under their constitution adopted on 13[th] January 2013 – updated and adopted at its AGM on 27[th] October 2021. The Club was established for the advancement of education and to promote the preservation and protection of health among older people aged 55 or over in Portglenone and its surrounding environs. This is achieved by:
a) promoting the arts among older people in the area of benefit;
- b) encouraging appreciation for and participation in community-based arts activities among older people in the area of benefit.
Portglenone Senior Citizens Arts & Craft Group had enjoyed another successful year. Twenty classes, facilitated by an art tutor were held in the Community Centre between September and March attended by fifteen participants (includes new members). The therapeutic benefits of painting proved helpful for some of the participants, improving their health and wellbeing. Some members who are in poor health especially enjoyed the sessions, finding the painting therapeutic. We had two guest artist demonstrations during the year – Paul O’Kane (oil 26/10/22) and Jacquie McNeill (portrait 22/2/23).
We completed our first term with Christmas dinner in The Wild Duck Inn Portglenone (02/12/2022), this was a great way to end our first term, by celebrating the festive season.
During our second term on 02/03/23 we visited the Van Gogh experience, with all having a shared interest it provided to be a worthwhile outing. This was followed by a welcome lunch in the Dunsilly Arms Antrim.
We finished the year with an exhibition showcasing our work to the wider community in the Community Centre Portglenone on 25/03/23. We invested money on extra advertising with new permanent banners and posters. This proved to be beneficial as our footfall was greatly increased. Volunteer from the community and members helped with the setup and organization of the display boards at the event, which again helped strengthen community connections.
This project has benefitted the people of Portglenone and surrounding rural areas with access to arts and crafts education. It continues to develop and reaffirm their appreciation of art. It brings people together, reducing isolation and it contributes towards the wellbeing of those over 55 years who participate.
