Objectives and Activities: The objectives of the charity are to: Promote the social, health and well-being of all the inhabitants of the Strabane district through voluntary community assistance and support. We also assist and support our partner and statutory organisations in the tackling of poverty and the promotion of social inclusion within the district. Our volunteers provide a 24hour response and support services 365 days of the year to the local community district wide.
Our volunteers are trained in a number of disciplines ranging from first aid, AED, REC 2 First Aid, Remote Access Emergency Care, Crisis Intervention, Suicide intervention, Rural and Urban search and Rescue, Community Support and Education. Our volunteers regularly attend refresher courses in all of the above.
We also ensure that our volunteers attend regular workshops on Defeat Depression, Aware, Assist, Mind Fitness, Drug and Alcohol addiction awareness to ensure that they have the most up to date information and advice to enable the correct sign posting of services to those in need.
Our volunteers have also achieved train the trainer certification, attended Child protection and vulnerable adult courses which are annually renewed. We visit local schools and youth group facilities as well as areas of high deprivation and unemployment to address issues around poverty and social isolation and to raise awareness as to the dangers of Drug and Alcohol abuse which at times seem to be a source of relief for most of the issues related to above. We attend local youth facilities and schools to highlight the dangers and promote safe use of and access to the district's rivers, quarries and waterways . W e are represented on a number of voluntary and statutory committees throughout the district providing community support and assistance.
Our volunteers respond voluntarily to incidents that threaten the social, health and wellbeing of the district's inhabitants. This includes inclement weather conditions such as flooding, snow and high winds where we provide sandbags, clear snow and debris to ensure continued and safe access to and from people's homes and businesses. Our volunteers provide voluntary safety cover at local charitable and community events and gatherings as well as safety patrols at weekends to safeguard the town's revellers.
Achievements and Performance: During this reporting period, the SAFE group have continued to provide large numbers of voluntary stewards to support local events throughout the district. We support local charity organisations by providing
safety provision at commuity bonding events such as Dergfest, Angling Fair,Christmas light switch on and Community walks
Other support and assistance afforded to the community throughout this period and during the winter months included emergency response cover where our volunteers responded to each threat of flooding or inclement weather that threatened the health and wellbeing of our local residents an d/ or property, educational training to both young and old within our communities. The SAFE Group continued to train our volunteers in developing their skills to ensure that we deliver a 'Best in Service' response to our community need. Courses and training were delivered in topics listed above including Defibrillator training, water safety etc.
