Trustee Annual Report – Bayburn Historical Society 2025 – 2026
We held our AGM and dinner in April 2025 marking the end of our 2024 – 2025 year. We hired the premises of the local Presbyterian Church for our 6 meetings on Tuesday evenings between September and March. This year we had to cancel our annual Outing but otherwise operated as per normal.
We learnt from Mark Doherty about Sir Sam Daidson of Sirocco fame and his amazing engineering brilliance, including heating and air conditioning for Royal Victoria Hospital. In October, Mark Doherty showed us the WW1 ‘zebra’ camouflage for tanks and shipping developed by the Artist, Norman Wilkinson. Thn in November we heard from Steve Diamond about the Glass girls from Whtehead, particularly Mabel Glass, Spittfire pilot, pilot of many aircraft and sered in the ATS.
In January, our Secretary delivered a talk on her relative Lily, born 1890, who loved to swim at Helen’s Bay. Then Aiden Campbell gave us a lively account of various heroes of WW2 born in East Belfast. In March Alison Murphy came from Lower Ards to deliver a surprising account of ‘Winnie and George’; George being a serviceman at the Somme and Ulster Unionist; Winnie being a revolutionary at the Dublin GPO in 1916 and women’s rights campaigner.
