Annual Report and Unaudited Accounts for Year ending 4[th] April 2024

Charity Registration Number: NIC 103013

Annual Report and Unaudited Accounts for Year Ending 4[th] April 2024

Board Report for the Year Ended 4[th] April 2024

We were delighted to celebrate our 10th Annual NI Mental Health Arts Festival in May 2023 and are thrilled with the response from our Stakeholders, Festival Partners, our Artists, Arts and Cultural Organisations, and our Funders, without whom Festival and our other creative projects would not be possible. Our gratitude to our principal Festival funders Belfast City Council and The Baring Foundation for their investment in Festival and funding for our international residencies in Cambodia and the Lebanon. We thank the Arts Council for funding the Moving Canvas project, Dormant Accounts Fund for supporting organisation development, the Mental Health Foundation for support for Festival, and Film Hub NI for funding to create a documentary on the Lebanon residency . One strand of funding that proved to be key to the development of NIMHAF was the financial support we received from Futurescreens NI. This has been a key component of our growth and underpinned our future strategic development.

With festival 2023 we have exceeded our own expectations this year, with a rich and diverse programme of events, created in collaboration with our Festival Partners and Funders. We embraced a diverse range of artforms, eclectic and engaging across Northern Ireland, with an extensive range of events and exhibitions leading into and beyond our Festival dates from the 11[th] to 21[st] May . It was a festival celebrating artists and arts organizations regional and internationally. Festival 2023 created a positive platform for Festival 2024.

Other activities that took place during 2024/24 were the international residency in Beirut where six Belfast based artists engaged with artists from Lebanon. This project will culminate in exhibitions and a project film screening during 2024/25 and at Festival 2024.

2023 saw the departure of Festival Director, Dawn Richardson. Dawn has made a major contribution to the success and progress of the Festival and to NIMHAF as an organisation. We thank Dawn for her leadership of the organisation and contributions she made to our success.

To fill the gap created by Dawn’s departure we appointed a temporary Festival Coordinator, Casey- Jade Campbell. Casey-Jade came from a background in performing arts and she brought with her knowledge and expertise in this and other creative fields. Casey- Jade worked in partnership with NIMHAF Chairperson, Noelle McAlinden to programme Festival 2024 which took place in May 2024.

NIMHAF 2023 Programme

Our NIMHAF Festival coincided with Mental Health Awareness Week and ran from 11[th] -21[st] May 2023, we are delighted to have brought together, a programme of diverse, dynamic and evolving arts activities with over 50 key events included. We presented a diverse & eclectic programme, embracing new & evolving visual & performance art, as well as theatre, spoken word and moving image arts, the festival celebrated the creativity, lived experience & selfexpression from both emerging & established as well as internationally renowned artists. All were united in challenging stigma & celebrating the pivotal role of creativity self-expression & the arts upon our Mental Health & Wellbeing.

Festival’s diverse programme incorporated visual and performing arts, theatre, film, choral and musical ensembles, poetry, spoken word, photography, sonic art, panel discussions, residencies and printmaking.

We continue through NIMHAF 2023 to empower artists to express themselves & instil confidence in creatives to come together and form, to connect & share beyond the Festival. NIMHAF encouraged their collective work to flourish and come to life, creating a safe space to engage & express emotion, lived experience & challenging stigma of talking about personal mental health.
