Main Activities The objectives of the Ulster Place-Name Society are stated in the Constitution.. a) to promote the study of, appreciation of, knowledge of and awareness of pla￿- names in the area of benefit and to pubEish a series of publications devoted to the field of name studi¢s, includiog a joumal and a bi-annual newsletter. b) to carry Out researcb into place-names. PTomote and supwrt the work of a survey of place-names tn the ar¢a of benefit and to nvdke the results of the survey available via a series of published volumes and via the internet where appropTiat¢. The society published two newsletters during th¢ 2016-2017 financial year as well as the 13th volum¢ ofAinm.' Journal ofName Sthdies. Over 300 copies of the issue werc pthtished and most were distnbuted to Soci¢ty members and interested parties (mostly university libraries). The UPNS did not publish an)¢hing else by its¢lf during this period, but members were very active in contributing to itllportant works publish¢d elsewhere". Kay Muhr completed her work as resear¢h¢r of Irish names for the four-volume OxfordDictionary ofthe Family Nanles ofBritain UP7dlreland. which was published in Novernber 2016. She then began working with Liam O hAisibéil on a publication on th¢ family names of tT¢land. Pat McKay began work on a jointly-authored book with Niall Comer of Ulster University on the towiland names of the Barony of Coleraine. He was comnjissioned by Mid-UIster District Council to supply Irish-languag¢ versions olthe Toad names and townland nani¢s of the area. Gordon Mccoy co-ordinated the Society's recommendations regarding the Northern dioceses to the Parish Names Project of the Church of Ireland. which aimcd io provide an Irish language version of every parish in Irelan¢ but was hamp¢red by a lack of inpul from experts on place-names. Mccoy res¢arch¢d the secondary sources while Pat McKay and Kay Muhr provided many interpretations which were not readily available. By Septemb¢r 12017 the material on tbe dioceses of Connor, Arniagl and Down and Dromore was complete. Events The society organised two public lectures in Queen's UniveT5ity Belfast. Thomas Clancy of Glasgow University spoke on 'The advent of GaeIic in ¢arly Scotland.. what can place-names tell us?, On 17 November 2016. 'The ToHTrdand Nam¢s of County Wexford, was presented by Conchubhar O Crualaoich 25 May 2017 to coincide with his publication of two volumes on the subject with his colleague Aindi Mac Giolla Chomhghaill. presentation suggested a timing of the Gaelic settlement in Scotland and O Crualaoich's work provided an improved model for mapping Anglo-Norman settlement in Ireland. Public Benefit Members of the Society also made presentatiODS. a5 listed below. tn particular. many of these illustrate the public benefit aspect of the Society's work. as statcd in the constitution.. The organisation plays a useful role in promoting cross-cominunity understanding by PToviding infornlation on the historical uffluence of the various indigenous languages of Ulster in a harnionious and non-contentious manner. Members of the public were made aware of the Society's activities through the UPNS website, www,placenames.org (now www.placename.org). Membership Th¢ Society has 53 memb¢rs at the time of its AGM in 17th November 2016. The majority of members w¢r¢ Individuals living in Northern Ireland, although there were members in Finlan(L Denmark and Australia. Th￿C organisations had corporate MeM￿rship of the Society. Members re(Yived a copy of the bi-annual newsletter and Ainm.. A Journal ofName Sthdies as s(yon as they were published. Members rontactable by email also T¢ccived news of events wbich w¢re of interest to them. Relationship with other Organisations Th¢ society is a tnember of the Federation for Ulstsr Local Studies (FULS). This is a valuabl relationship. as FULS promotes UPNS events and provides UPNS with details of events which may be of Inte￿9t to our members. FULS also makes the UPNS aware of legislation and events r¢lated to charities and voluntary organisations in Northern Ireland. The UPNS has a close relationship witb the Northem Irclalld Place-Name Project (WNP). the prof¢ssional body established in Queen's University, Belfast. Th¢ director of the NIPNP, Micheai o Maijjnin, who is heavily involved in expanding the organisation's townland r¢s¢arclL is also Ihe chair of the UPNS.
