Community information/Literature distribution

We have held five literature distribution days this year and have always had at least four members available to inform the general public on the prevention of fires, poisonous fumes and also farmyard safety advice with the assistance of the Health and Safety Executive.

Wellbeing/mindfulness educational day trips

Day trips have been arranged to promote good welfare and physical and mental health, with activities to reduce feelings of isolation and provide support for retired firefighters and their families.

On evaluation of those who attended the trips it was reported that the trip was most enjoyable, educational and all looked forward to another day. Attendees all reported that they felt a lot happier and less stressed for a time after the trips. There has been two day trips organised this year.

Memorial Service

The annual memorial service in Dublin was not attended by any members during 2022/23.

Donations on behalf of deceased firefighters.

Wreath laid for the Queen on behalf of the association.

Fundraising activities

Asda foundation gift aided the association through their Green token giving vote scheme.

Grants.

Never applied for any grants this year.

Other income

The members of the association also pay dues to help cover some of the cost of insurance. Events insurance covers association for basic public liability for £288.00 covering the period 07/03/23 to 06/03/24.

Aims for 2023/24

Given the positive public engagement with our community information and literature distribution days, we will try to get more days arranged to increase Fire and Safety awareness for the general public.

A few of the association members have volunteered to give talks and demonstrations on fire safety to other volunteering groups in the Mid Ulster district.

The association has also restarted the Carbon Monoxide detectors scheme.

Trustees' Expenses

No expenses were paid to any of the Trustees during the year, during 2022/23 the only expenses paid was to reimburse them for purchases made on behalf of the Association.

Insurance

No charitable funds have been used to purchase insurance to indemnify the Trustees against the consequences of any neglect or default on their part. Public Liability Insurance was purchased, see details in Trustees Report.

Accounting Policies

Section 133 of the Charities Act 2011 permits a charity to prepare a receipts and payments account and a statement of assets and liabilities where gross income in the financial year does not exceed £250,000, therefore receipts and payments accounts and a statement of assets and liabilities has been prepared and presented for the year ended 30[th] September 2023; this is consistent with previous years. Bank interest/fees is included in the Admin & General category. All Income, including grants is recorded when received. All Expenditure is recorded when paid. No gift aid has been reclaimed.

Independent Scrutiny

In the year ended 30[th] September 2023 gross income did not exceeded £25,000 and therefore, in accordance with the sections 144 & 145 of the Charities Act 2011 no audit or independent examination is required.

There were no outstanding bank transactions.

Independent examiner’s report to the charity trustees of Northern Ireland ExFirefighters Mid Ulster Association

I report on the accounts of the association for the year ended 30 September 2023, which are set out on pages 6 to 7.

Respective responsibilities of charity trustees and examiner

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.

It is my responsibility to:

Basis of independent examiner’s report

I have examined your charity accounts as required under section 65 of the Charities Act and my examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland under section 65(9)(b) of the Charities Act.

My examination included a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also included consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as charity trustees concerning any such matters.

My role is to state whether any material matters have come to my attention giving me cause to believe:

  1. That accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 63 of the Charities Act

  2. That the accounts do not accord with those accounting records

  3. That the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act

  4. That there is further information needed for a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Independent examiner’s statement

I have completed my examination and have no concerns in respect of the matters (1) to (4) listed above and, in connection with following the Directions of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, I have found no matters that require drawing to your attention.
