Accidental Theatre
Annual Report 2023 / 2024
For the year running 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024.
Registered Charity in Northern Ireland NIC 108109 accidentaltheatre.co.uk
Purpose of Charity
Accidental Theatre, is a Belfast-based arts venue founded in 2012. In 2017, we took over an empty bank building in Shaftesbury Square, a recognised priority area for urban regeneration in the most divisive and diverse area in Northern Ireland. From vacant to vibrant, we created a 100-seat theatre, shared workspaces, rehearsal space, meeting rooms and an industry-leading digital and broadcasting space. All with very little external investment, but with a lot of work and fantastic community support.
Accidental now houses professional, grass roots and community arts, giving space for careers to be established and creative passions to be fostered. As a vital and prominent organisation in the area, we host events, workshops, classes, performances and meetings for the whole community. Our targeted projects and events look to address racial and social tensions in the area (as demonstrated by the summer 2024 riots).
Accidental is dedicated to nurturing creativity, fostering inclusivity, and building strong community ties through our extensive range of community outreach activities. Recognising the transformative power of the arts we aim to make artistic expression accessible to all, regardless of age, background, or ability, thus enriching the cultural fabric of the community we serve. In a country of polarised opinions such as NI, having a non-partisan community and artistic space has proven essential.
In 2024 we reached 12,000+ event attendees and 4,500+ workshop participants, through our general work and the Arts for All Programme . With an additional 750 artists per year supported through our Artist Development and Across Cultures Programmes .
Accidental creates theatrical productions and outreach & education projects for the public of Northern Ireland. These are for the entertainment, education and inspiration of our audiences and the general public. We use theatrical productions and methodologies as we believe they are the best ways to directly engage, transform and involve the public in our work and in using art to effect change in their lives and in deprived areas of Northern Ireland. Our work is public and directly accessible to all members of our society, with
Registered Charity in Northern Ireland NIC 108109 accidentaltheatre.co.uk
many projects being free or low cost. We aim to inspire communities and individuals through large scale theatrical art that captures the imaginations of large audiences. And then more directly engage and educate the public through less visible outreach work. All of our work focuses upon empowering individuals, and giving voices to the often voiceless in society. Raising levels of well-being in communities through artistic engagement, cultural creativity and creating new opportunities to work and engage in the arts. Theatre can have a transformative impact upon individuals, communities and cultures. Once a person learns how to freely express themselves and recognise the importance of this, their lives are no longer the same. We want every citizen of Northern Ireland to have that chance. And the rest of the world to be able to see and appreciate the unique creativity and culture of this country.

Director’s Report
In 2023-2024, Accidental Theatre continued to showcase a diverse range of activities and performances, highlighting its commitment to promoting the collision of diverse perspectives, art forms, and unusual collaborations. We continued to be a hub for diverse and eclectic performances, embracing a range of art forms and collaborations. The theatre maintained its commitment to hosting a wide array of events, from comedy and music to theatre and cabaret, thus ensuring that its audience always experienced something new and exciting.
Accidental responds to the needs of artists and the community by:
-
Offsetting the financial burden on artists;
-
Promote sector sustainability in the region through digital technology innovations;
-
Championing under-represented artists;
-
Ensuring that all communities can participate in civic life through artistic events;
-
Providing affordable access to a wide range of events catering disadvantaged communities.
As a venue and arts organisation our work is diverse with a wide reach and impact. We’ve designed four flagship initiatives that support the needs of artists and our whole community:
-
Artist Development Programme
-
Arts for All Programme
-
Across Cultures Programme
-
Digital Support & Innovation Programme
Artist Development Programme (ADP): works to protect the jobs and livelihoods of artists in our community by relieving the financial burdens upon artists and creating career opportunities. ADP is the cornerstone of our support activities, providing early career artists with rehearsal space, offices, performance space, materials, mentorship, technical and marketing support. We particularly support those from disadvantaged and diverse

backgrounds, to develop and further their practice. Our development work focuses on: literature, music, comedy, theatre and film, with projects like: Scratch Nights, Cosmic Jam, Handmade Music, Accidental Comedy Club, Writers’ Circle, Belfast Short Film Club and Never Seen It Film Club . These programmes offer artists from across all art-forms opportunities to incubate work and test out new projects. Supporting them to build a following and raise their profile. In addition, by embracing the digital advancements in the industry, Accidental supports artists to reach not just local, but national and international audiences, developing stronger links both inside and outside NI. We understand the career impact for artists to build a following on the global level, especially for NI artists forced to find a significant percentage of their income outside the country. We profile artists regularly and support them by creating digital content of their work to share on social media (examples on Youtube). This programme has been running since 2011, even through the pandemic, making it unique in NI. Often artist support programmes at other organisations come and go with grant funding. Ours remains a core aspect of our work and scales with investment.
Partners: Moving on Music, Queen’s University, Ulster University, Sonic Arts Research Centre, CinePunked, South Eastern Regional College, Arts Council of NI and Belfast City Council.

Across Cultures Programme: provides a platform to champion artists from different cultures and backgrounds such as artists from immigrant and asylum seeker communities who struggle to be featured within NI. We directly support artists from global majority backgrounds with financial, creative and logistical support to create their own

performances and events. The programme focuses on sharing different cultures, empowering immigrant artists but also facilitating connections between them and existing communities in NI. Bringing our diverse community into the building and creating opportunities for people to work, play and integrate in a safe way, commonalities are shared, and meaningful relations are facilitated. For 2023-2024 we targeted music and musical artists, sharing culture through music as a way to cross cultural divides, in an effort to address racial tension in Belfast. In 2025-2026 this will be expanded into creative writing with a dedicated refugee and asylum seeker creative writing hub.
Our commitment to EDI is very evident in this project as EDI informs everything we do. We moved specifically to Shaftesbury Square, one of the most culturally diverse areas in Belfast, because we recognised the power of the arts in challenging social inequality, championing inclusivity and addressing racial tensions. Our Across Cultures programme provides a platform for underrepresented voices, so that we can directly respond to the challenges faced by ethnic minorities and under represented communities who struggle to access the same opportunities as traditional ones. We ensure they’ve a platform where they can reach audiences and build livelihoods. By gathering regular feedback from all

our communities, we ensure that we deliver against those needs and that everyone has a say in programming. This not only creates a sense of home for many but communicates a message of a home for all, which is crucial to all residing in the area. Accidental offers a safe space for the whole community and ensures equal opportunities to all whether a community is established or new to the area.

Arts for All Programme: offers art, dance & theatre workshops and classes led by professional artists and educators for all. These sessions cover a wide range of mediums, from painting to digital media and multiple dance styles like tango, salsa & swing. We collaborate with a diverse team of facilitators from various ethnic backgrounds to deliver an exceptional community outreach and engagement program. We employ innovative arts-based learning experiences that not only enhance education but also emphasise the significance of active participation, creativity, and self-care in both mental well-being and social civic life, as well as physical health. All workshops & classes are low cost, to reduce financial barriers to participation, making it possible for participants from all backgrounds to explore their creativity, develop new skills, and express themselves in a supportive and nurturing environment. This extends beyond the classroom and to the whole building, as we’ve also opened it up to provide community meeting space and offices, offering

endless opportunities for all communities to come together and participate in community life. The programme encourages and supports art in a highly diverse area of multiple cultures by giving all communities a voice in programming and creating a ‘safe place for all’, in which to find community, access economic opportunities, build livelihood, learn new skills, and celebrate cultural expression.
Digital Support & Innovation Programme: Accidental is a pioneering arts venue renowned for embracing state-of-the-art technology and providing unwavering digital support for the arts community. In today’s digital age, we offer comprehensive digital, live streaming, and video support services that cater to artists, fellow arts organisations, and local charities. This long-term programme connects directly with our other programmes to amplify their impact and reach by allowing artists to have show/event recordings, instrument recordings of their work and video interviews/profiles. Both documenting their practice and having their work acknowledged, championed and celebrated. The digital work is uniquely suited to crossing borders, through projects like our Shared Cultures project, which allows us to digitally connect with fellow venues across Ireland & UK, to swap artists, share performances and collaborate on projects. In addition, Accidental aims to live stream 70%+ of our work, allowing international audiences to connect and support artists and for immigrant artists to easily connect with audiences and families back home. We’ve also started working on immersive projects, funded by ACNI & Immersive Arts, to better adapt live performance work to new mediums, further supporting NI artists to reach new audiences at home and globally.
During this period, Accidental featured events like an extended evening of improvised and experimental music, as part of the Handmade Music series. This event, started in February 2023 and has grown in strength, included performances from both local and international acts, demonstrating the theatre's focus on vibrant and ambitious storytelling through various art forms. It will initially run for 5 years, in partnership with Sonic Arts
Registered Charity in Northern Ireland NIC 108109 accidentaltheatre.co.uk
Research Centre at Queen’s and Moving on Music. It has already created additional events from: Black Triptychs , Terrain Festival and more.
In addition to live performances, Accidental also continued to pioneer a new approach to remote theatrical and streaming production, known as The Belfast Method . This initiative included training opportunities for those interested in live streaming systems and setup, collaborative digital technologies, camera techniques, sound design, video editing, and more. The training was designed to be practical and hands-on, with a focus on live events such as music, theatre, comedy, and improv shows.
Accidental continued to offer Rehearsal Space, Workshop Space, Offices, Meeting Spaces and much more to the local community as well as to further afield. And this remains one of the main activities that Accidental supports the wider Belfast arts community as well as a more general community.
Overall, Accidental Theatre's activities in 2023-2024 illustrated its ongoing dedication to fostering a vibrant and inclusive arts environment in Belfast, with a focus on supporting a range of artistic expressions and collaborations.
Our programming highlights included: Handmade Music , the Accidental Comedy Club Sonorities Festival , Cosmic Jam , Across Cultures , Hamerama & Never Seen It Film Club .

Statement of Trustees Responsibilities
The trustees (who are also the directors of Accidental Theatre Company for the purposes of company law) are responsible for preparing the Report of the Trustees and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:
-
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
-
observe the methods and principles in the Charity SORP;
-
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
-
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charitable company will continue in business.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
Approved by order of the board of trustees on 31st October 2024 and signed on its behalf by:
