Annual Remarks from the Chair, Horn of Africa People's Aid Northern
Ireland
Dear Volunteers, Staff, and Esteemed Funders,
As Chair of Horn of Africa People's Aid Northern Ireland, l am privileged to reflect on a
remarkable year of growth, impact, and collaboration. Our achievements result from the
dedication, passion. and hard work of our staff and volunteers, whose commitment
continues to make a tangible difference in our community.
This year, we celebrated several milestones and impactful initiatives:
Housing Project Support: Successfully supporting over 400 individuaLs. addressing
housing insecurity, and providing critical stability and hope.

2. Youth Social Action Programme Extension.. The continuation of this transformative
prograrnme fortwo more years was made possible bythe generous support of our
funders.
3. Sports Activities: Inclusive sports programmes have fostered teamwork, physical
heaLth, and a sense of belonging, particularly amongyoung people in our community.
4. Homework Club: This initiative continues to provide essential educational support,
ensuring children and young people have a safe and encouraging space to learn and
grow.
5. Drop SeNice Programme: This vital initiative addresses the immediate needs of
vulnerable individuals while promoting iong-term stability.
6. Capacity Building for Small Groups: Empowering smaller community organisations has
enhanced collective efforts to address poverty and education gaps.
7. Upcoming Ignite Community Project Launch: This exciting initiative will focus on
fostering youth social entrepreneurship, social innovation, and creativity.
We sincerely thank ourfunders, including Belfast City Council, The National Lottery
Community Fund, CFNI, BBC Children in Need, and the Oak Foundation, fortheir
unwavering support. Your contributions have been instrumental in extending critical
programmes and empowering the next generation of leaders.
We also extend our deepest gratitude to all our supporters, including individuals,
institutions. and the wider society across Northern Ireland and beyond. Your kindness and
solidarity have been the cornerstone of our success. To our dedicated volunteers and
trustees, your unwavering commitment and vision inspire us daily. The collective strength
of this remarkable cornmunityfuels our mission and propels us forward.

continued support of our volunteers. staff, funders, and supporters, l am confident that we
will achieve even more significant milestones in the year ahead.

About HAPANI
Horn of Africa People's Aid Northern Ireland IHAPANII is a registered charity and non-
governmental organisation supporting individuals living in Northern Ireland who originate
from the Horn of Africa- Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and the Republic of Sudan and
South Sudan. HAPANI is inclusive and accessible, welcoming individuals regardless of
ethnicity. nationality, religion, gender, or social background.

Core Objectives
1. Develop initiatives fostering independence and participation among individuals from the
Horn of Africa.
2. Raise awareness among service providers to respond effectivelyto the needs of Horn of
Africa individuals and beyond.
3. ChaLlenge intolerance and promote inclusion of African communities in Northern
Ireland.
4. Build mutual support between Horn of Africa individuals. refugees, asylum seekers, and
the host community.
5. Raise funds and resources for education. agriculture, and health projects in Horn of
Africa countries.
HighLighted Projects
From April 2023 to March 2024, HAPANI provided vital support through the following
projects:
Destitution Project:** We distributed £44,968.01 in cash donations to 275 individuaLs,
alleviating immediate financial hardships. This would not have been possible without the
generosity of ourfunders and supporters.
Digital Povety Project: In collaboration with Vodafone Charities Connected. HAPANI
distributed 1,270 six-month SIM cardstoyoung people and families. ensuringdigital
connectlvityfor education and essential services. We are deeply grateful forthe financial
and in-kind donations that made this initiative successful.

HAPANI'S mission is to alLeviate poverty, advance education, and promote the well-being of
African individuals, particularly those from the Horn of Africa. This extends to asylum
seekers, refugees, and their dependants residing in Northern Ireland, as well as children
living in the Horn of Af rica I'the beneficiaries"). Key objectives include:
lal Providing practical assistance, fostering social inclusion, promoting racial harmony, and
helping benef iciaries integrate into Northern Irish society.
Ibl Delivering educational programmes, including EngLish language lessons and homework
support, for beneficiaries in Northern Ireland.
(cl Alleviating poverty by maintaining sponsorship programmes to support the education
and development of children in the Horn of Africa.
(dl Advancing any other exclusively charitable purpose as determined bythe directors. in
accordance with charity law.

7. Public Benefit Statement
ALI HAPANI Trustees have reviewed the Charity Commission's Public Benefit requirements
{as detaiLed in the statutory guidance from July 20161. Trustees are confident that HAPANI'S
activities aLign with these requirements. The Charity's purposes falL underthe 12
descriptions of charitable purposes outlined in the Charities Act and are designed to
benefit the public.
8. Financial Review
The financial statements provide a detailed account of the year's results. The Board is
satisfied with HAPANI'S financial performance duringthe 2023-2024 period, which saw
substantial expenditure on funded projects. Expenditure was well-managed and remained
within budget, with funding secured forthe immediate future.

No funds were materially in deficitatthe end of thefinancialyear.
