KAF has been involved within the community in the following roles:

  1. Supporting events and activities within the community, thus encouraging community cohesion, helping to bring the community together.

  2. Working with and through other agencies and groups to help develop the local area and tackle issues identified by members of the local community.

  3. A community partnership group for both sharing information with the community and, in turn, receiving information from the community.

We have worked alongside Belfast City Council Parks and Leisure team to help create a better environment for local people to enjoy.

The community garden has grown in strength and has been providing local people with produce for the kitchen table. Also, the colour produced by the many flowers and plants during spring, summer and autumn have had therapeutic benefits for the community. The community garden has been used for educational and recreational needs by the community and also by various groups including, among others, Knocknagoney Primary School and Nursery and the Orchard Care Group. It is recognised by KAF, the efforts made by Greig, Mark and the team of volunteers who have provided an area for the local children, youth and other community groups to enjoy.

KAF has continued to work alongside the PSNI to help tackle anti-social behaviour issues within the local area. There are now more Park Wardens visiting the Linear Park and because of this and extra lighting which has been installed, the Linear Park is a safer and more attractive area.

KAF is continuing to strengthen contacts with local politicians and through these contacts the area is able to apply for community funding for East Belfast, CIEP (Community Initiatives Education Programme).

Family Events were encouraged throughout the year around the Community Garden and Linear Park including a Family Fun Day at Halloween, July holiday and Christmas.

During August a football coaching programme was held in the Community Gardens pitches for the local youth and children.

The local churches held an outdoor service at Easter and, again, a Carol Service in the Community Gardens at Christmas.

Community Cohesion and Environmental – the team sought to identify additional ways of bringing the community even closer together and to encourage active participation in the events held. The local Facebook social media page has been successful in promoting awareness/information for the local community as well as encouraging everyone in taking ownership for the tidiness of our area.
