Influence publlc policy
Cancer Focus Nl's mission 18 to reduce the ri8k of people in Northern Ireland getting cancer and

goals.
Progress in 2022-2023
Healthy public policy sets a supportive environment for all our services and Campaigns and has
far-reaching impact on cancer trends. services and outcomes. Therefore. we place a priority on
engaging with decision makers in our campaigning and advocacy work. We organised a full
programme of events for the Assembly's All-Party Group on Cancer (APGC) this year. The charily's
role as Secrelariat to the APGC allowed us to update MLAS on progrèss in the development of the
Department's new Cancer Strategy and there was an enGouraging level of cross-party engagement.

months) of unrestricted expenditure on charitable activitles. The Directors have updated its
organisational policy to ensure that approximately 6 months operating costs are maintained.
The main reason for holding ras8rves is to ensure that Ihe charity has enough resources to fund the
programmes it is supporting and to meet any emergencies that may arise.
Plans forfuturo perlod8
A new organisational strategy {2023-2027) was launched In June 2023 as detailed below.
At its core, Cancer Focus Northem Ireland's future strategy Is to create spaces and
envlmnments that radiate a sensé ol sanctuary and welcome.
We envisage places of community that those on a cancer journey feel drawn towards and are nol
intimidated by. Our Support Centres will be strategically placed across Northern Ireland. Thèy will
provide flexibility in how people engage, from being able to drop-in and have a coffee with a cancer
specialist to availing of more tailored, $tru¢tured individual or group therapeutic support. Most
Importantly, we want people to experience and have acce5S to a place of social connedion and to
have the opportunity to participate In and be part of a community where they feel comfortable and
understood.
The look and feel of our Centre8 will be crucial to how patients and 88rvice users will interact with
them. They will be thoughtfully and carefully designed to ensure that visitors experience a sense of
being apart from the clinical environment of a hospit81, or the hustle and bustle of everyday lrfe. It is
important to us that they are close to, but separale from, the pla￿8 of diagnosis and treatment.
The Centres will offer space and opportunity for relaxation. reflection and solace as well 88 providing
emotional and practical support along with access to information and advice relevant to the needs of
each person and their family.
Every visrtor who will cross the doorstep of a Cancer Facus Northern Ireland Therapeutic Support
Centre will have their own story, their own set of unique fears. hopes and aspirations. We will welcome
everyone as they are and where they are, when they tske the courageous step to come in. We will bè
r¢oted in communities and equipped to embrace and provide the supwrt nthork required for every
person who invites us to join them on their cancer journey.

Auditor's responsibilities for the audlt of the f5nancial statements
Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole
are free from material misslatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor's rèport that
indudes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that
an audit conducted in accofdance wilh ISAS (UK) will always detect a material misstatem8nl when rt
exists. Misstatemenls can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the
aggregate, they could reasonably b8 expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on
the basis of these flnancial stalemenls.
Irregularities, including fraud. are instances of non-compliance with laws and regulations. We deslgn
procedures In line with our responsibilities, outlined above, to delect material misslaternents in respect
of irregularities. including fraud. The 8xt8nl to which our procedures are capable of detecting
irregularities. including fraudls detailed below..
In identifying and assessing ri5k5 of material mi85tatement in respect of irregularities, including fraud
and non-compliance with laws and regulations, we considered the following..
•th8 nature of the industry and sector, control environment and business performance including the
design of the remuneration policies. key drivers for directors, remuneration, bonus levels and
performance targets.,
results of our enquiries of rnanagement about their own identification and assessment ol the risk8
of irregularities..
any matters we identified having obtained and reviewed documentation of their policies and
procedures relating to..
identifying, evaluating and complying with laws and regulations and whether management were
aware of any instance8 of non-compliance,.
detecling and responding to the risks of fraud and whether management have knowledge of any
actual, suspected or alleged fraud.,
th8 internal controls established to mitigate risks of fraud or non-compliance with laws and
regulations.
the Matters discussed among the audrt engagement taam including significant component audit
teams and relevant internal specialists, including tax and valuations specialists regarding how and
where fraud might ¢xcur in the financial statements and any potential indicators of fraud.
A$ a result of these procedures, we considered the opportunities and incentives that may exigl within
the organisation for fraud and identified Ihe greatest polential for fraud. In common with all audits
under ISAS IUKI, we are also required to perform specific procedures to respond to the risk of
management override.
We also obtained an understandin9 of the legal and regulatory frameworks in operation, focusing on
provisions of Ihose laws and regulations that had a direct effect on Ihe determination of material
amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The key laws and regulations we ¢onsidered in
this context included ongoing ¢ompliance with the UK Companies Act and lax legislation.
In addition, we considered provisions of other laws and regulations that do not have a direcl effect on
the financial staternenls but compliance with which may be fundamental for their ability to operate or to
avoid a material penalty.
