Chairnian's Re
I am pleased to report that it has been another pleasantly busy year in the life of
Lisburn Historical Society - a year that began with a change of month for the Annual
General Meeting - from September to April. The Annual Dinner was well attended
in Dunmurry Golf Club and our thanks go to the Club for allowing us to use their fme
venue and for providing a lovely meal. The outing in April 2016 to Dublin and
Wicklow was a resounding success and l thank Finny - and his assistant Olive - for
organising this splendid trip. David Twigg organised a most interesting visit to
Thiepval Barracks and more recently a very fine visit to Hillsborough C&stle. He too
has earned the grateful thanks of the members for his detailed planning.
This year again we had a varied programme of indoor meetings that members
enjoyed in the Museum and we look forward to another interesting talk later this
evening.
Whilst the committee meet in the Spring to arrange the series of talks- making
suggestions as to speakers and topics - it is the secretary who sorts everything out to
fin&ilise the progrdmme and arrange for the speakers to turn up.
Members of the Society had. been most happy to attend recently the opening of the
Dennis Osborne art exhibition held here in the Museum.
The committee has been meeting more frequently in the past few months, planning a
Celebratory Dinner to mark the 50 anniversary of the founding of Lisburn Historical
Society. The event is to be held in the Museum on 22" November 2017.
Before closing I want to thank the committee and Society members for their kindness
and support for me as I perforni my t&sk at the fronL In paying tribute to the
committee, I must make special mention of the Secretary and Treasurer for their
invaluable work for the Society.
We in the Society know that the ambience of our meetings is due in no small part to
the surroundings in this fine museum and I thank the staff who are always present at
the doors each evening and in attendance during the meetings.
Finally, I give special thanks to Paul Allison and to Brian Mackey, who, she was
pleased to say . would still be here for some further time.

The advantage of following the Chairn]an is that nearly all matters have been covered
by her. My short report is like a dose of deja vu. However, it would be remiss of me
not to say, on behalf of us all, a very sincere thank you to Rosemary for chairkng the
Society through another successful and enjoyable year. Thank you Rosemary.
I would also thank the officers and committee members for their help.as always in my
role as secretary. Yet again we did not hold too many meetings this year. mainly
because FirLny and lan worked very effectively to deal with matters arising. We have
maintained the very c(Foperative and sociable working relationships of previous
years so it has been a pleasure to serve with this group. Once again. I would urge
more members to take a turn in office and help to keep the Society running
effectively. Most of the current committee have served for many years and we do
need some change occasionally to share the workload. I have been a member of
committee since 2008 and Hon. Secretary since 2009.
We continue to email as many documents as possible. I now post out only to 16
addresses which reduces my workload considerably and saves the Society a lot of
money that would otherwise be spent on postage. I thank you for that and I would
urge all members with an email address to make it available for our use.
The website for Lisburn Historical Society continues to be used and has facilitated
enquiries from members of the public. If you need to contact our Secretary or
Treasurer, and don't have contact detailsy you can easily reach them by using the
website.
The regular correspondence received this year has been notices and insurance matters
from FULS and a letter from Dunmurry Golf Club in relation to our annual dinner.
We also had a very nice reply from Lord Eames explaining that he couldn't be our
after dÉnner speaker for the 50 Anniversary Dinner as he had business in London on
the same date.

Before cornmencing my report I hope you all received a copy of the at]nual accounts
whtch have been left on each chair. Should anyone not have received a copy there are
copies available.
You will notice that the accounts are in a different fonnat from previous years as the
way they are presented must now comply with the requirements of CCNI.
On the first page is a Statement of Receipts and Payments for the financial year
ending 31 August 2016.

Starting from the left hand side of the page we have a column giving the transaction
details. There are then 5 columns of figures. The first column headed "Unrestricted
Funds" lists the funds used for the everyday running of the Society. The total income
for the year ending 31 August 2016 was £1 1.764.64.with total expenditure of
£11,289.16 leaving a sutplus of £475.48.
Moving down the page to the Bank Reconciliation heading the surplus is added to
the opening Bank balance at 01 September 2015 of £4510.67 which ￿VeS a closing
balance at the 31 August 2016 of £4.986.15.
Below this is the Reserve Deposit Account which earned interest of £1.73 and the
balance is £2.773.73
The next column is titled "Restricted Funds" and covers any monies to be used for a
specifled purpose, which is the society Journal Account. The entries for this account
appear at the bottom of the page the only transaction was the receipt of £3.40
interest.
The Society do not have any Endowments so there is nothing to record in column 3.
The amounts in the "Unrestricted Funds" column are repeated in column headed
"Total 2016" to allow a comparison to be made with the accounts for the previous
financial year which are given in the column headed "Total 2015". The surplus in
2016 is down on the previous year but the closing bank balance is up.
CCNI require a Statement of Assets and Liabilities to be prepared and this is on the
reverse side of the sheet. The totsl Assets of the Society, are the Current accounL
Reserve Deposit account and Journal account which total £13,217.30.
up from £12.736.69 the previous year. As we operate a Receipts and Payments
accounting system there are no liabilities.
Mr Ronnie Earle in his usual meticulous and efficient manner carried out the annual
Audit of the accounts and has indicated a willingness to continue as Society Auditor
should this be the WAsh of members.
The audited accounts, to meet our legal obligations, have been submitted to CCNt
and can be viewed on their website.
