## **ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2023** 

The Executive Committee has pleasure in submitting to the members of County Antrim Agricultural Association this report on the activities for the year ended 31st December 2023. 

## **Annual General Meeting** 

The Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday 21st March 2023 in Des Allen Suite at Ballymena Showgrounds. The minutes of the 2022 Annual General Meeting were read, and Mr Robert Dick signed same as being true and accurate with no objections.

Lynne Wilson gave an overview of the Annual Accounts, and the Annual Report and Statement of Accounts was adopted with special thanks offered to the staff at DT Carson & Co.  Retiring members were all re-elected. The Annual Subscriptions for members was reviewed and Mr Brian King proposed reducing the yearly subscription to £150. This was seconded by Mr John Crawford and the motion was carried. Yearly membership remained unchanged at £15.  DT Carson & Co were re-appointed as the Association’s Auditors while McKervill Neilly were appointed as the Association’s Solicitors. 

Chairperson, Mr Robert Dick thanked the committee for their dedication to the show and extended his gratitude to the many volunteers and stewards, without whom the Show could not survive. 

## **Ballymena Show Breakfast Launch 2023 – Tullyglass Hotel, Ballymena** 

The breakfast show launch was held for the second year in Tullyglass Hotel on 5[th] April. Chairperson, Mr Robert Dick welcomed invited guests, sponsors, ,Executive Committee members and volunteers and thanked them all for their support throughout the year. 

Following a delicious breakfast, Mr Randal Hayes noted his thanks to all who supported the Show in whatever capacity and also to Gus McConville and his team at Tullyglass Hotel. 

The audience was addressed by Mr John McLenaghan, Deputy President of Ulster Farmers Union and also MEAC Deputy Mayor, Alderman Beth Adger. Randal Hayes once again thanked everyone for their time and very generous support. 

As always, the local and regional press provided an excellent service during the build up to the show, at the Breakfast Launch, on Show Day and printing results after the show.  This is always appreciated by the Committee, Exhibitors, Traders and Sponsors of Ballymena Show and a note of thanks was also given to those who assisted in delivering and displaying the promotional fliers and posters. 

## **Sponsorship and Donations 2023** 

Sponsors and Donors are vital to the survival of Ballymena Show, to encourage participation in the numerous classes and County Antrim Agricultural Association issued prize money to exhibitors of the 2023 show as well as numerous vouchers

and other prizes. The Committee wish to record their sincere thanks to all who supported the show by their attendance, as well as those who loaned equipment or gave advice. Thanks, are also extended to Mid and East Antrim Borough Council for the provision of the excellent facilities at Ballymena Showgrounds and the support given by the staff throughout the year. 

## **Community Grants** 

Thanks were noted to Mid and East Antrim Borough Council for their major awards grant scheme which awarded the Show a grant of £3000.  This grant is a major contribution to the income of the Show and is warmly welcomed. 

## **Annual Show 2023** 

The Annual Ballymena Show was held on Saturday 17[th] June for the third time at Ballymena Livestock Market on Woodside Road. It proved very successful, with great support from local traders, exhibitors and the public and the weather held up during the time of the show. 

For the first time, card facilities were provided at the admission gate, which meant that people could pay for admission using either a card or cash. This proved very successful, and much use was made of this facility. Also, for the first time, electronic admission tickets could be purchased and paid for in advance online through Ticketebo and avail of a discounted rate. As this was much used and received such positive feedback, the facility will be available in 2024. 

The Supreme Cattle Champion and Dairy Champion was won by Martin and Cyril Millar with N. Wilson winning the Overall Beef Championship. 

W. McAllister was the winner of the supreme championship and the interbreed ewe lamb champion with Alister Gault being awarded the interbreed ram lamb championship in the Sheep Section. 

Within the horse section, the supreme champion was Eva Lowry, with Chloe Hunter being the runner up. 

For the first time, NI Pygmy Goats ran a competition at the show. The champion male and female were won by Connbrook Pygmy Goats. 

The number and standard of entries within the Home Industries section was excellent, with significant entries from local schools, Kilronan School won the secretaries shield for gaining the most points in their section with Carniny Primary School winning the overall schools section excluding baking. The Ballymena Medical Supplies award was won by Wilson House for the home/care centre gaining the most points. Broughshane Women’s Institute was awarded the Runcimann Bowl for gaining the most points in their section.  The exhibitor with the highest points in floral arts was won by Colleen Hamil. The pet show proved great fun and was well supported. 

All those who entered any section of the show are congratulated and thanked for their support and we hope this level will be maintained or increased in 2024.

## **Judges & Entries** 

As always, the judges travelled from mainland UK and the island of Ireland bringing their expertise to each area of their individual categories and sections. All were delighted by the level of hospitality given and a note of thanks is also given to the many stewards who offer their services year on year. 

## **Young Farmers** 

Lisnamurrican, Ahoghill and Glarryford Young Farmers Clubs continue to support the role of the Show and engage with the club activities and competitions. Much thanks must be mentioned for all the support throughout the year, and various efforts to setup and clear up after the show, as well as on show day. 

## **Volunteers** 

Ballymena Show could not exist without the dedication and support shown by our many volunteers, and it is appreciated at every level of the organisation.  We also thank all external organisations who assist in many ways to ensure the Show is a success and give of their time and expertise. The Executive Committee would also appeal for any persons interested in volunteering to contact the show office as well as possible sponsors and traders to help to maintain the success of Ballymena Show. 

## **Show Office** 

As in previous years, a temporary office was located within the centre area of the show which allowed the secretary to co-ordinate activities and deal with any queries from the public. 

## **Office Bearers** 

At the Executive meeting Mr Robert Dick continues in his third term of office as Chairperson of the Association with Mr Jason Harkness as of Vice Chair. 

## **Annual Awards Ceremony** 

Following the success of last years awards ceremony. Tullyglass again hosted the event in 2023. Over 100 people enjoyed a delicious meal and entertainment was provided by Bob Esler.  Trophy presentations were made to all our worthy winners from the show. 

## **Obituary** 

The Committee record with regret the deaths of Members and friends during the year and tender sincere condolences to all concerned. 

## **Show Office and Governance Issues** 

The show main office continues to be manned on a part time basis and it is requested that all queries are either forwarded to the secretary by email on secretary@ballymenashow.co.uk or via the show mobile number, 07718 478 413.  This year the Show continued to build on the online entries.

## **MEMBERSHIP** 

The Executive Committee appeal to the public to become members of the Association, and urge on all members, the importance of using their influence towards increasing the number of subscribers to advance the aims and objectives of the organisation.  Members shall consist of subscribers of not less than £15 per annum with Vice-Presidents subscribers of not less than £25 per annum and Subscribers of £150 and upwards shall be life members. The advantages of membership are that Members will be entitled to free admission to the Annual Ballymena Show and a reduced entry fee in respect of certain exhibits entered for the Show.  Members must wear their membership badges on the show days to gain entrance and also as an encouragement to others to join/support the Association.

## **FINANCIAL STATEMENT Y/E 31 December 2023** 

Statement of Income & Expenditure prepared by Auditors is self – explanatory. 

## **TRADING INCOME (total: £61,438 in 2023 vs £56,525 in 2022)** 

Members subscription fees and admission charges increased significantly in 2023. 

Also income from trade stands and entry fees showed an increase. Income from sponsorship and grants decreased since 2022.

Again, as in previous years, we have benefitted from a grant from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council of £3,000 however no other funding opportunities were noted. 

## **INVESTMENT INCOME (total: £1954 in 2023 vs £472 in 2022 )** 

Investment income increased  this year representing a greater return in the investments. 

## **TRADING EXPENDITURE (total: £59,397 in 2023 vs £54,747 in 2022)** 

Expenditure on insurance, salaries, bank charges, affiliation fees, general expenses and  prize money have increased in 2023. 

However, expenditure on stationery, advertising, postage and telephone, management software system, hire of equipment, judges expenses and rosettes have decreased. 

These increases and decreases were noted and highlights the importance on ensuring the show meets its full potential. 

The above income / expenditure added to investment income shows a SURPLUS figure of £1,705 with a SURPLUS of £942 recorded in 2022.  This is reflective of the Show Day and attempts will be made to continue this surplus balance. 

Balance sheet shows a net worth £78,348 (£76,643 in 2022). 

## **To summarise Ballymena Show reflects a profit.** 

## **Sustaining a small surplus year on year is the main aspiration, however the challenges and difficulties in achieving this should not be underestimated.**
