Mediation Northern Ireland is a company limlted by guarantee whose obje¢ls are recognised by the Charity
Commission for Northern Ireland.
Objectives and activltles
New Strateglc Plan February 2023
In February 2023 the Board of Trustees adopted a new strategic plan for the organisation. This updated the
Charily's Vision and Misslon and supporting Values.

The objects of the charlty and Its prlnclpal activity continue lo be the charltable purposes of advancing education
In Northern Ireland and worldwlde, partlcularly by providing third party inlervenlion in disputes and supporting
crealive approaches to good relations.
All the charily's assèts are used for charitable purposes in support of this object. The Board members do not
receive any monetary benefit for Iheir role in governing the charity and as, members. they are not digible for
financlal benellt from membership. In the event of any windlng up of the charity ils remaining assets shall be
Iransferred to anolher charitable body with similar objects. Most community based users of services do not pay
for the cost of the service, or If Ihey do the full cost is subsidised.

We undertook one run of our flagshlp programme Medlatlon Theory & Practice durlng this period. We also
dellvered some shorter training courses both in person and online with our exislSng client base.
Peace
The main focus of our acllvStiès in this financial year continued lo relale lo our three on-going Peace IV funded
programmes, two based In The Newry Mourne & Down District Cour)cil area, and one Belfast City Council. As
the programmes had been significantly dlsrupted and delayed up to thls point due to Covid, and with a hard
deadllne to complete these, we had a breadth of aclivily lo complete the objectives. These included many
training events, group facilltalions and collallon of stories for generating project materials.
The Board of Trustee5 met monthly durlng the Managing Director transition, and later bi-monthly, in Board
meetings and sub-groups meetings throughout the year. The Board were particularly atlenllve to the financial
wellbeing and slrateglc dlreclion of the organisalion and a focus on supporting the organisation as and when
operallons could return to normal.
MNI continued lo provide office space lo a range of voluntary organisalions including new tenants into the
building. This breathed new life into the building again (renamed during the year as Medlatlon House) after Ihe
Covid years of furlough and more work from home pracllces for us and our tenants.
Flnanclal Revlew
The Statement of Flnancial activities describes Mediation Northern Ireland's income, expendlture and funds for
the 2022123 year. The Income of £182,632 marked en Increase of 240A on the previous year.
The Capital fund (primarily the MNI Buildlng on 83 University Slreel) is £315,265.
There is no deferred income balance al the end of March 2023.
Reserves
Free ReseNes are £45,567 which is the net current assets on the Balance sheet. We have a reserves pollcy of
six months operallng costs, £50.000 whlch we are currently worklng towards.
RlskAssessment
In developSng its corporate strategy the Trustees assessed the major risks lo which the charity might be exposed,
in particular Ihose relaled to its governanc8, financial and op8rallonal strale9y.
The greatest rlsk that Mediallon Northern Ireland faced In 2022123 was relaled lo cashflow aiising frorn Ihe
Peace IV programmes, We faced uncertainly as to when and how operations could resume, enabling us able lo
deliver Ihe outcomes required against the funding that meant we could draw down the Income.
Future Development
In 2023124 our focus will be on completing our Peace IV programmes and completing Ihg developmènt and
Implementation of the new $tralegic path for the organisalion sel out by the new Managing Dlrector.

Medlallon Northern Ireland was established In 1991 as The Confllct Medlallon Nelwork. In 1998 il became a
company Ilmlled by guarantee (N1339781 with Memorandum & Articles of Associatlon whose objects have been
recognlsed as charil8ble by HM Revenue & Customs under reference XR16490. The Charlty Is reglslered with
Ihe Charilles Commission for Norlhern Ireland, number N1100935.
The membership of the Company is the same group of people as makes up Its Board of Trusteès. There is not a
publlc membershlp scheme.
The role of the Board of Trustees & Management
The Board of DSre¢tors of Medlallon Northern Ireland is referred to as its Board of Trustees.
Full Board of Trustee meellngs occur a mlnlmum of 5 tlmes per y6ar.

Managemgnt team to account.
Flnanclal Control: Approving the annual budget., Monitoring expenditure wilh reference to the budget.

Support.. Maklng Indlvidual skills and experlence available wlthln the Board and to the Director and
senlor staff.
Advocacy: Acting as ambassadors for the organisation and supporting the Director in securing project
funding,

Membership of Ihe Board of Medialion Northern Ireland is subject lo a maximum term of 6 years.
Board memb8r8 are recrulled to meel specific needs and capabilities that ensure a balance of experience and
understanding to ensure effeclivo governance of the charity.
Day to day operatlonal management is delegated lo the organlsallonal Dlrector. In October 2021, following the
resignalion of Ihe Director, Laurie Randall was appolnted Inlerlm Dlieclor. A new Managing Director Enda Young
was appointed in May 2022, and look up post on 5th September 2022. Rob Colwell, Operations Director, is
responsible for operational financlal management under the direction of the Board approved budget.
In addition to this small management team the organisalion has a regisler of12 Assoclales.
The organisallon continued lo rely upon the work of Associates Ihroughoul the year. This reliance is due lo Ihe
small full-time staff team and the continued emergence of new aspects of the ADR work within the organisation.

statement of Trustee's Responslbilltles
Company and charity law requires the Irusteos lo prepare financlal statements for each financial period which
glve a true and fair vlew of the slate of affairs of Ihe charlty and of its financial position at the end of that period.
In preparlng these flnancial statements, the trustees are required to..

make judgments and estlmates that are reasonable and prudenl.,
state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed sublecl to any
departures disclosed and explained in the financi81 statements., and
prepare Ihe financial statements on the golng concern basis unless it is inapproprlate to presume that
the charlty will continue in operatlon.
The trustees have overall responslblllty for ensurlng that the charity has an approprlale system of Internal
controls, flnanclal and othemise. They are also responsible for keeping proper accounling records thich
dlsclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial posltion of the charlly and to enable them to ènsure
that the financial statements comply with the Companles Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding
the assets of the charity and hence for taking re8sonable slep5 for Ihe prevention and detection of fraud and
other IrregularSlles.
