Since the last AGM in August 2022 there have been eight committee meetings which were all well attended. With face-to-face covid restrictions having been lifted, these meetings were held in the Cloughey pavilion, but with a zoom link for those wishing to attend remotely.
Tree and daffodil planting
After the success of the previous year’s daffodil planting, the committee and volunteers extended the planting along Main Road, and along the grass areas on the Kircubbin Road. This resulted in a lovely colourful display which may be extended further in the future.
The community garden opposite the school continues to mature. The tree bark added last year has succeeded in keeping most of the weeds at bay and giving winter protection to the planting, and we have had a donation of extra tree bark to keep it topped up.
Over the winter we ‘brought on’ forty oak tree saplings, and with the help of members of the Cloughey Football Club, these were planted along the edge of the football field in Calhame. They are growing well and hopefully will continue to mature over the coming years.
Beach Care Group
Individual beach walkers have been litter picking all through the winter, and therefore the beach and warren have been well looked after. Two organised litter picking mornings were organised, the last one just after Easter, and both cleared a good amount of litter. These were social events giving residents a chance to catch up with each other and enjoy tea and cake.
Events
Christmas Light Switch On
The Christmas tree lights were switched on at the beginning of December by the Deputy Mayor Craig Blaney. Afterward everyone gathered at the pavilion for mince pies and a visit from Santa.
Defibrillator Training
During the winter months two training sessions were held in the pavilion to instruct residents in the use of the defibrillator and general first aid. These were well attended and found to be useful.
Miscellaneous
The committee continues to liaise with Council officials and other organisations in the improvement of facilities in the area. We notified road services about missing twenty mile per hour flashing lights that were missing on Main Road at the school, and they were duly installed. We hope to continue working with environmental groups and council departments to continue the proper maintenance of the Warren and improve the village and environment for residents.
