Activities

The Association is established for the advancement of education, the preservation, protection and promotion and mental and physical health and wellbeing, the relief of poverty, sickness and distress and to promote the benefit of the inhabitants and in particular but not exclusively those who have lost a relation or friend through death (hereinafter called the “beneficiaries”) resident in the Downpatrick area and its environs of Co. Down, Northern Ireland (hereinafter called “the area of benefit”) without distinction of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, ethnic identity, political or religious opinion, by associating the statutory authorities, medical and other public health bodies, community and voluntary organisations and the beneficiaries in a common effort to promote health and relieve suffering with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said beneficiaries and in particular: (1) to alleviate suffering and trauma by the provision of a community-based drop-in centre or centres offering emotional support and counselling services to individuals in need. (2) to relieve suffering and promote the preservation and protection of mental health of those people and their families in the area of benefit who are suffering or experiencing mental or emotional distress and anguish as a result of grief, bereavement, trauma, social and economic circumstances, paramilitary violence and terrorism, domestic abuse and violence or difficulties in their personal lives by the provision of advice, counselling and emotional support services. (3) to encourage the bereaved and those suffering from the effects of trauma to provide mutual support and encouragement to each other with the aim of improving the conditions of life for the beneficiaries in the area of benefit. (4) to relieve poverty and financial hardship by the provision of free or subsidized counselling services, advice and assistance to persons who, through lack of means, would otherwise be unable to obtain such services and advice. (5) to educate and train persons in counselling so that they may treat and relieve persons experiencing or suffering from mental and emotional distress and to advance public education on the impact of bereavement and of related issues.
