Financlal Instwments
Objectives ond policles
The chorily's aclivilies expose it to a number of financial risk5 includlng credit risk. cash flow
risk ond liquidity risk. The use ol financial derivalives is governed by the chorily's pollcles
approved by the board ol trustees, which provide written principles on the use ol linor)cial
derivalives to manage Ihese risks. The charity does not use derivolive financial inslruments lor
speculotive purposes.
Cash flow risk
The charity's activities expose il primarily lo the financial ii5k5 01 changes in foreign currency
exchange roles and interest roles. The chorily uses foreign exchange forward conlracls and
interest rate swap contracts lo hedge these exposures.
Credlt rl$k
The chorily's principal financial ossets ore bank balances and cash, trade and olher
receivables, and inveslmenls.
The chorily's credit risk is ylmorily attribulable lo ils trade receivables. The omounls
presented in the balance sheet ore nel ol allowances lor doubllul receivables. An
allowonce for irnpairmenl is made where there 15 an identified loss event which, based on
previous experience, is evidence ol o reduction in the recoverability of the cash IIow5.
The credit risk on liquid funds and derivative financial instruments is limiled because the
counlerparlies are banks wilh high credil-ralings assigned by Internolional credit-rating
ogencies. The charity has no significant concenlrolion ol credit risk, wlh exposure spread
over a large number of counlerpailies and customers.
Llquldlty rlsk
In order to maintain Ilquidily lo ensure thot sufficienl funds are avoilable for ongoing
operations and future developrnenls, the charity uses a mixture ol long-lerm and short-term
debt finance. Further details regolding fiquidity risk can be found in the Slalemenl ol
accounting policies in Ihe financial slalemenls.
