The trustees present their annual report and financial staleménls for the year ended 31 March 2024.
The financlal statements have been prepared in accordance with Ihe accounting policies sel out in note 1 to the
financial statements and comply with the charity's Memorandum and Articles of Association the Compani&s Act
2006 and 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities

Objoctlves and actlvltles
New Lodge Arts is a thriving arts organlsation delivering community arts projects across North Belfast. The
organisation has a strong community focus and a passion for supporting the needs of young people from
disadvantaged communities, New Lodge Arts conlinu8s to make a positive impact in th8 local area.
New Lodge Arts ensures their programmes are appealing and appropriate to local people. The diverse range of
activities include a year round sustained programme of activity including dance, drama, vlsual arts, film making and
youth leadership, volunteer development programme and event management. Additional programmes are delivered
on a cross-communlty basls almed at promoting physical regeneration and shared space.
New Lodge Arts has four main aims:

New Lodge Arts continued to str8ngth8n and develop thelr annual arts programme. offering a diverse range of
initiatives for p&opl8 across north Belfast. These programmes conlinue to enrich the lives of partlcipanls, helping
them to grow and develop, to reduce isolation and encouragas th8m to become active citizens within their
community.
Arts Academ
weekl classes
The Arts Academy remains at the core of our work. Throughout the past year we deliver8d 19 weakly classes to 250
participants. Our programme included a range of creative activities including guitar lessons, ¢raft classès, drawing
classes, drama. hip hop. ballet, visual arts and youth theatr8, continue to stimulat8 ¢reativity. build self-esteem and
develop confidence of participants. The classes make a huge impact on tho particlpants. Herg is a quote from an

DFA Funded Pro
ramme- Build PositlV8 Chan
Young people from New Lodge Arts and YWIC (Youth Work in Communitias - EA @ Woodvale) involved in the
TBUC Cr8ative Voices Programme have mov8d on to Build Positive Change, funded by DfA. The group has
participated in several design-basad workshops facilttated by Steve Hunter (formedy Fablab Belfast) to design and
build a portable pod that will be used to rècord local peoples. experiences. The group surveyed attendees of the
Spring Family Fun Day about the types of questions they propose to ask visitors to the pod and, from the
responses, have created a set of interview questions. Working with Steve they have built pod prototypes and thair
work has been documented on film. This film was launched in Aug 2023.

Four resident artists from ArtEz, University of the Arts, Nethertands, were based with New Lodge Arts from April-Jun
2023. The artists in residence are studying at Masters degree level and exploring the role of socially engaged
practice and artistic research that puts art to work in the name of equality and social justice. Curr8ntly all four are
8xploring the development of the Studio space. Ayham Ali worked with young people from New Lodge Youth Centre
exploring shared spac& through th8 usa of 3D printing. Clara Lee worked with the New Lodg8 Arts senior youth
group to explore symbols. The group designed and created symbols representing their identity that were produced
as temporary tattoos and stickers. They hav8 also produced symbols for th8 Studio Space. Stephanie Hatzis looked
at the functionality of the Studio- what is being used and how il is being used. Pompado IZ.R.l Martha explored the
creation of a cyb8r-18arnlng space for digital and audio visual media in The Studio,

The summer season In North Belfast just got a whole lot more dramatic, Ihanks to th8 annual Summer Drama
Camps hosted by New Lodg8 Arts. With thr88 camps cat8rlng lo diff6r8nt ag8 groups- Tinys, Junior, and Senior-
these camps have become the highlight of tha summ8r for aspiring young actors and th8atr8 enthusiasts alike.
This year. the summer drama camps welcomed over 50 children, each bringing their unique talents and passlon for
the perfomiing arts. From budding actors to future Broadway stars, these camps have nurtured young lalent and
provided an exceptional platform for creallvity and self-expression.

The Tlnys Camp, in partnership with the esteemed C21 The8tre Company, was a fantastic showcase of young
talent with the theme of Backwards Fairylales. Under the guidance of experienced theatre professlonals, these
young Ihaspians d8valop8d Ihelr sklll$ and showcased Ihem in a memorable performance at Glrdwood Communlty
Hub. The showcaso was a testament to thè power of collaboration and the boundless potential of young porformers.

Producllon of 'Annie'
The Junior Camp, a group of tal8n18d young actors, deliver8d a hèart-warming and memorab18 production of the
beloved musical 'Annie.' The audience at the North Queen Slr&8t Community Cenlre were left in awe as they
watched these young stars bring the timeless tale to life. The dedication and passion of the junior cast shone
through in every scene, leaving not a dry 8y8 in th8 house. Their pèrfomiance was a true t8slam8nt to th8 power of
youth and the magic of theatre.

The Senior Camp, the crèm8 d8 la crèm8 of th8 summer drama experlence, dazzled audi8n¢es with three sold-out
shows of 'The Llttle M8rmaid' at The MAC. This group of talented young teenagers not only delivered an incredible
performan¢8 but also showcased slunnlng vocals that would be the envy of any Wesl End productlon. The Senlor
Camp demonstrated what can be achleved through hard work, dedication, and a love for the art5.
The Summer Drama Camps offered participants more than just the chance to perform on stage. They provided
58fe and nurturing environment for children and young adults to build self-confidence, develop communication skills,
and make lasting friendships. The camp experience goes beyond the final bow. leaving partlcipants wilh memories
and skills that will last a lifetime.
A collaboration with Battersea Arts Centre and Contact Theatre Manchester In 202312024 has secured Ihe dellvery
of The Agency, a project that supports young people (aged 15-25), as social entrepreneurs, lo make a difference
and transform their local area in a way that they think is best (https'.Ilbac.org.ukJget-involvedllhe-agencyll. We see
The Agency as a progression opportunity for young people with a passion eff8Cting social change in their
communities.
In September, 18 local young people has the opportunity to participate in an award-winning creative
entrepren8urship programme providing an opportunity to effect lasting change in their community.
The Agency programme was originally conceived by theatre maker, journalist and activist Marcus Faustini in the
favelas of Rio d8 Janeiro. New Lodge Arts is working in partnarship with Battarsea Art Centr8, London, Contact
Theatre, Manchester, Storyhouse, Chester and Energize Me, Southampton. The programme aims lo empower
young peopl8 aged 15-25 to becom8 creativ8 leaders and catalysts for change in their communities.

Over the first 12 weeks, the young people developed projects and business ideas through a creative, thealr&based
methodology. All projects musl include a social action component that gives back lo Iha communily. The panel was
greatly impressed by tho project ideas and Ihoir pr6sentations.
The three projects selected for funding were Abi Flannagan's 'From Seed 2 Plate, (supported by Aoife Teer and
produced by Tp Ward),. Sophie Rossbotham's 'Rise Above Ihe Ashes, (supported by Grace Rogan and produced by
Matt Farisl; and a joint project by Maggie and Nalalia called 'New Heights, (produced by Amy Smyth}.
The young partlcipants successfully executed Iheir projects, engaging young people from communities across north
Belfast. The funded projects offered a variety of actlvlties. Including hiklng, gardenlng, lournallng, and drama
workshops.

amplifies the voices and ide8s of young people. creatlng a collectlve force for systemallc change.
The Agency stands as a shining example of how the pro9r8mme ignites the passlon for entrepreneurship and soclal
¢hange among young people. With its track record of success and ils ongoing irnpact on the community, The
Agency is a leslament lo the power of youth-driven initiatives in driving positive change.
orth Belfast Lantern Festiv81
The North Belfast Lantern Festival's family fun day successfully unfolded amidst challenging weather conditions,
attracting approximately 500 people. Held in Alexandra Park, the event featured a diverse array of aclivilies,
including arts and crafts, games, music, dancing, and live performances, creating a vibrant and engaging
atmosphe￿ for attendees of all ages. The festival also showcased ils commitment to community engagement
through an outreach programme that involved over 20 local groups and schools, fostering a sense of unity and
collaboration. Despite the weather, Ihe North Belfast Lantern Festival provided a joylul and inclusive experience for
families. highlighting the resilience and spirit of thg community.
Unfortunately due to a torrenllal downpour at 4pm, the park was flooded and the evening event was cancelled,
which was hugely disappointing. Due to health and safety. there was no way we could proceed with the event.
ew Lod e Arts Ch 'slmas Panlo
This year, New Lodge Arts presented a fabulous production of 'Snow Whlte and the Black Forest Gateau,"
delightful I￿1St on the classic fairy tale, written by Maire Campbell and adapted by the talented Debra Hill. From the
12th to the 14th of December at Boys Model School, this Panto provided a magical experience filled with laughler
and joy.
The heart-warming tale of Snow White takes an unexpected turn in this adaptation, bringing a scrumptious ￿1St to
the narrative wlth the inclusion of the Black Forest Gateau. Maire Campbell's creative genius, combined with Debra
Hill's adaptation skills, adds a deleclable layer to the beloved story, ensurlng a unique and memorable experlence
for attendees.
One of the highlights of thi5 productlon is the fabulous ca51, comprised of talented young individu81s from across
North Belfast. Thesg budding stars bring energy, enthusiasm, and a fresh perspective to the stagg, infusing the
performanca with a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere. The witty dialogue, playful interactions, and clever comedic
moments ensu￿ that éveryone in the audience, regardlèss of age, will find Ihem58lv8S thoroughly entertained. It's
the perfect recipe for a joyous and festive evening out.
Girdwood - Chris

Our Junior Youth Theatre group were delighled to spread some festive cheer of Girdwood Hubs, Christmas Event
on Saturday 16th December 2023. With a shared passion for community involvement, they eagerly set up stations
for arts and crafts, marshmallow snowmen, card making, inviting children to unleash their imagination. Dressed as
Santa's faithful @Ives, th8y guided 8ag8r childr8n through the festivities, supporting Santa as he gave out the
selection boxes to the excited children. We were hugely proud of our young people and looking forward to getting
them back again to help at fulurg evenls.

Girdwood HalfTerm Cam
From 12th-14th February 2024. we delivered a 3-day camp In partnership with the Girdwood Shared Space Group
(Let Youth Lead, TAMHI, CCRF & BCC)- 60 young people participaled in a range of drama, arts & crafts and sport.
We hope to build on this programme and provide additional activities during school holidays.
The annual évant took place on Saturday 23rd March 2024. Th8 &vent included a lange of youth led activities, arts
and crafts. games, music, danc6 and performances. Despite the weath8r, over 300 people attend8d.

New Lodge Arts is widely supported by a range of statutory and charitable sources Including Arts Council Nl, Belfast
City Council and The Executive Office. Support from Trusts & Foundation5 is key to th8 delivery of our annual
programma and w8 ar8 very grateful lo Tudor Trust. Garfield Weston. Henry Smlth Charity and Halifax Foundation
for their support.
Flnanclal ravlew
At 31 March 2024, th8 total funds ofthe charity amounted to £101,573 (2023- £86,700) comprising £61,88012023-
£43,691) of reslrided funds and £39,693 (2023- £43,009) of unrestricted funds.
Reservès pollcy
The directors retain funds In th8 charity in order to provide sufflc18nt working capital to facilitate lh8 ongolng
activities. The current level of fr88 reserves is sufficient to meet approximately 2 month5 salary and running costs.
The target for unreslri¢led resetves is slx months support costs in cash al bank.
Major rlsks
The dlrectors have conducted a r8view of th8 rnajor risks to which the charity is exposed. Wh8r8 appropriale,
systems or procèdur8s hav8 been established to mitigate the risks the charity face5. Internal control risks are
minimised by the implementation of procedures for authorisation of all transactions and projacts. Procedures are in
place to ensure compllanc8 Wlth health and safety of staff, volunt8ers, clients and vlsitors to the prèmlses. These
procedures ar8 pgrlodlcally reviewed to ensure that they contlnu& to me81 the needs of the tharlty.

New Lodge Arts is a charitable cornpany limited by guarantee, incorporated on 28 July 2010. It IS governed by its
M8morandum and Articles of Association. It has no shar8 capital and the guarant88 of each member is limited. In
th8 8V8nl of the company being wound up members ar8 required to contribute an amount not exceedlng £1.
